That makes sense...and I can understand it. But I more was looking at it from the OTHER side. When age of consent is 16, does that mean a 16-year old can have sex with someone of any age? I have an issue with THAT. Or does that just mean that at 16 they can have sex with anyone under 18 without it being illegal?

Age of consent means you can have sex with anyone without asking your parent(s) for permission.

No means no in sexual relations. You have not given permission to have sex. If you are below the age of consent, you legally cannot say yes.

OK, sorry I'm so slow...but this means:

In a state where the age of consent is 16, a high school student (16) can have sex with a 47-year old? As long as the 16-year old consented the 47-year old didn't do anything legally wrong?

Yikes. I never knew that.

If I'm not mistaken, no, it means 16 and 17 year olds can have sex with each other, but any 18 years or older cant it's still statutory rape.

This is Virginia for example, where no one under age of 18 can consent to sex, but close to age exceptions are available, which makes no sense to me at all (I had to read it a couple times, theres two separate underage ranges that are "exempt" from having their life ruined, in theory)

OK, I'm more comfortable with that. Phew.

So, anyone under 18 and above the age of consent can do whatever they want with anyone else in that category. Fine. It's kids and kids.

Sort of, you can still get arrested if daddy finds out and loses his ****, then you can use the "romeo and juliet" defense in court and pray for mercy.

the exemption just means they won't prosecute while still believing they are too young to consent.

add

laws like that are why the ability to decide on abortions below consent age are wacky.

A chilling picture of how hundreds of girls and young women from around the world were trafficked for sex by Jeffrey Epstein, his alleged madam, Ghislaine Maxwell, and a number of other powerful business and world leaders emerged Friday in court documents unsealed in New York.

The documents, a portion of thousands of pages in a 2015 federal defamation case, offer brutal details about Epstein’s trafficking of teenage girls from across the United States, Russia and Sweden — and Maxwell’s compulsive and often abusive quest to provide him with new girls over a span of years in the early to mid 2000s.

I am glad this is coming out. It's beyond disgusting.

It makes me wonder how uncommon this is.  This sex trafficking ring is big news because of who is involved.  It's a celebrity scandal and those draw a lot of attention, but these people also strike me as amateurs in the criminal game.  I keep reading about how Epstein wanted these girls for himself and maybe his associates.

What about the criminal organizations out there grinding through young women, and no doubt boys as well, for profit?  just how big of a problem is this?

Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged ‘sex slave’ reveals the men she claims she was forced to sleep with

Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged teenage “sex slave” claims she was ordered to sleep with powerful men — including a former US senator, the former governor of New Mexico, a prominent hedge fund manager and a late longtime MIT professor.

The identities of the men were revealed in some 2,000 documents unsealed Friday in Manhattan federal court related to Virginia Giuffre’s defamation lawsuit against British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.

In a deposition, Giuffre, née Roberts, claimed she was trafficked to MIT professor Marvin Minsky, who died in 2016 at age 88, as well as former Maine Sen. George Mitchell, ex-New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and money manager Glenn Dubin.

She also claimed to have had sexual relations with Jean Luc Brunel, a modeling agency honcho credited with discovering Christy Turlington and Milla Jovovich.

Giuffre has previously claimed that she had sex with Prince Andrew and noted attorney Alan Dershowitz.

Quick, who looked up to see what side of the aisle Mitchell and Richardson were on?*

Click on that link that China just posted, there's a photo of Giuffre with Prince Andrew with Maxwell in the background, it's creepy.

Glad to see some names coming out of this, finally.  Hopefully there's more to come.  And while I'm not sure that any of these perverts will do hard time, the court of public opinion might be worse in some respects.

Unfortunately, sex trafficking is a huge business. Check out the news stories about this "business" around big sporting events like championships, probably Miami, Vegas, and places in CA.  This "business" and porn are related, both involve the sale and consumption of adults and children for sexual purposes.

If you (rhetorical you) have to pay for sex, then the person you buy isn't really doing that willingly but for money. And if children are involved, it's rape no matter how you look at it.

It's an important part of rape culture where adults and children are used and the punishments for sex crimes are frequently non-existent because of non-prosecution or merely probation or very short term incarceration. Sex crimes aren't taken seriously, unless there's a death. Even now, defendants are using as a defense to a choking and/or battering death to sex play that the decedent wanted. Of course no one knows what the the decedent has to say about this because death.

Until sex crimes are prosecuted and punished more severely, rape culture continues.

Knew that they were Democrats. They are also men. Not many women in the sex crimes business as manager types.

Well it'll be sickening to see the left and right sling arrows at each other about this. Put the team jersey away and recognize this for what it is, they are all rich and powerful in some way. That's what they have in common and they are each equally disgusting. There's no whataboutisms for this at all.
