This $800K House in Fairfax Will Go Quickly. It Comes With a Person in the Basement.

The five-bedroom house on Prado Place in Fairfax’s Mantua area has a great location—a Trader Joe’s and a Home Depot are close by—and a tempting price, especially for someone with a healthy budget for reno: It’s listed for only $800,00 in an area where many sales top the $1M mark.

The owners want only cash offers, and the home, which needs some work, is sold as is. That’s not uncommon in the still-hot Washington market, but there is one major quirk, per the listing, which has landed the home on popular Instagram account Zillow Gone Wild: “home will convey with a person(s) living in lower level with no lease in place.” You can’t see the lower level, the listing says.

Reached by phone, listing agent Zinta K. Rodgers-Rickert of Zinta & Rob and the Red Truck Realty Group Re/Max Gateway says the basement resident is someone who “weaseled her way in” and has been there for about three years, with perhaps another person living with her. The tenants, for lack of a better word, have no lease and aren’t paying rent. The current owners are just not “the type that can financially afford or emotionally deal with the eviction,” Rodgers-Rickert says.

Nevertheless, the house already has one offer, and Rodgers-Rickert expects two more by the end of Tuesday.

I read about this earlier today.  Pretty wild.  Sounds like the squatter has a child with her.  The home owner is an old man who doesn’t have much time left and their child(ren) is/are the one(s) trying to do this sale before he dies.  They’re asking for cash because the house won’t appraise.

Apparently child marriage had been legal in Maryland until yesterday:

Child Marriage Is Banned in Maryland

Yesterday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed a law banning child marriage—a prohibition that many residents were likely surprised to learn wasn’t already on the books. Prior to this law, marriage was legal starting at age 15. Now, 15 and 16-year-olds can no longer get married in Maryland. And at 17, you can get married only with parental consent and the blessing of a court.

A 2021 Capital Gazette story estimates that 80-100 minors are married in Maryland each year, the vast majority of them teen girls marrying older men. Additionally, the Washington Post reports that Maryland has recently become something of a destination for child marriage, as couples from more restrictive states flocked to Maryland to wed.

A wild turkey is on the attack in D.C.

There's a menace haunting the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail in Washington. It hunts the lonely, quiet stretch of woods between an aquatic garden and a recreation center. Suddenly, it appears in front of a biker, walker or runner and gives chase, flapping, slashing with its talons - and gobbling. It's a male wild turkey, and it's already sent someone to urgent care.

Now, scientists, park rangers and others are out to catch the wild butterball. Despite its fowl attitude, victims want it peacefully relocated. The turkey's presence might ruffle feathers, but it's also a sign of the recovery of a species - a story of conservation success.

County Grants Approval for Amazon's Helix-Shaped HQ Tower

The Arlington County Board gave unanimous approval Saturday to Amazon's plans to build a unique, helix-shaped tower as the centerpiece of its emerging second headquarters in northern Virginia.

Amazon announced the plans in February 2021 for the eye-catching, 350-foot tower to anchor the second phase of its redevelopment plans. The new office towers will support a second headquarters for Amazon that is expected to welcome more than 25,000 workers when it's complete.

The helix is one of several office towers granted approval, but the helix stands out. The spiral design features a walkable ramp wrapping around the building with trees and greenery planted to resemble a mountain hike.

Amazon has said the building is designed to help people connect to nature, and the outdoor mountain climb will be open to the public on weekends.

Remembering Art Ehrens, Washington’s earworm-crafting jingle maestro

by John Kelly, Washington Post

The jingles of Art Ehrens helped sell everything from sub sandwiches to oil changes - The Washington Post

Art Ehrens never had a song on the Billboard charts. But if you grew up in Washington, the music he wrote plays in the Top 40 of your head.

Ooh, ooh Jerry’s.

Ourisman Dodge. You can depend on Ourisman Dodge. Great name, great cars.

We’re good to your car so your car will be good to you … Jiffy Lube.

Art wrote jingles, those brief snatches of song designed to plant an earworm and create a customer. He died in his Bethesda home April 16 at age 76. Among his survivors are his wife, Jayne, and children, Jon and Emily.

Jon posted a collection of jingles from his father’s 40-year stint in the advertising world on the music site Bandcamp: artehrens.bandcamp.com. The dozens of jingles represent the marketplace in music: Erol’s, Giant, Marlo, Tysons Ford, Thompson Creek Window Company, Next Day Blinds, Joanne’s Bed and Back, Spa Lady ….

Over two dozen flamingos killed by fox at National Zoo

At least 25 flamingos at the National Zoo were killed by a fox who managed to breach their fortified enclosure on Monday.

Staff at the D.C. area zoo found the dead birds early Monday morning. They also spotted a fox before it escaped through a softball-sized hole in the enclosure’s steel mesh. The heavy-duty metal mesh surrounds the outdoor yard, a National Zoo news release said.

WATCH: Man in ‘Poop Emoji’ costume lets off stink bomb at council meeting

A man wearing a “poop” emoji costume aiming to highlight what he called a “turd of a bill” on police accountability interrupted a council meeting in Maryland’s Anne Arundel County on Monday, May 2, by deploying a stink bomb in the room, police said.

In footage of the meeting, the man, who identifies himself as Phil Ateto, gives testimony to the council in which he complains that they passed a bill establishing a Police Accountability Board without involving the Anne Arundel County Coalition for Police Accountability, and which gives “the illusion of transparency, but with no actual accountability.”

“You got it passed with the labor and discomfort that comes with passing a giant turd, and then thought you could flush it and move on,” Ateto says, before accusing the council of “betraying the most marginalized people in our community” and “upholding white supremacy.”

A few minutes later, after Ateto returns to a seat in the audience, councillors begin smelling something pungent in the room. The odor prompts them to take a recess and clear the chambers as court officers try to identify the source. The officers swiftly approach Ateto – one of only a handful of people in the audience – and escort him out of the room.

Four More D.C. Restaurants Earn Michelin Stars

Quote

The Michelin Guide — the restaurant ranking provided by the French tire company since 1904 — has awarded four new restaurants in D.C. with its prestigious stars.

New one-star restaurants in the 2022 guide are Albi, Chef Michael Rafidi’s Levantine cuisine restaurant located in Navy Yard; the chef’s counter at Imperfecto, which serves Chef Enrique Limardo’s fusion of Mediterranean and Latin American food in West End; Oyster Oyster, Chef Rob Rubba’s vegetable-forward eatery in Shaw; and Reverie, Chef Johnny Spero’s tucked-away tasting-menu restaurant in Georgetown.

This means 24 eateries in the D.C. area now have Michelin stars, representing an “increase in the quality of local food offerings,” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides. That list includes just one top tier restaurant with three stars, The Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Virginia, and three two-star restaurants: minibar by José Andrés, Jônt from Chef Ryan Ratino and Pineapple & Pearls from Chef Aaron Silverman.

Three restaurants fell out of the star category: Plume at The Jefferson Hotel, which is permanently closed; Komi, which is currently operating as Happy Gyro; and Sushi Taro, which went takeout-only for at least part of the pandemic but is now reopened.

Been to several on the list and all were superb, but I trust Tom Sietsema more on the DC dining scene.  Continued dis of gems like Rasika and Little Serow is head scratching.

Rasika West End is next to my office, it's fantastic.  Looks like Blue Duck lost its star (not surprising). Metier should have 2 stars.

Loose Barges Come to a Halt in Potomac River

Two barges are now stopped in the Potomac River after breaking loose this weekend and making their way down choppy waters in West Virginia, authorities say.

First a "construction barge carrying a Caterpillar excavator and other equipment" broke loose on Saturday evening, followed by another barge on Sunday afternoon, Christiana Hanson, a spokesperson for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, said.

According to authorities, the barges, which were floating downriver toward Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, have since stopped moving.
