We Finally Know How Many Cats Live in DC

The cat is, as they say, out of the bag: A three-year effort to count the number of felines in DC has concluded, and it turns out the city is home to around 200,000 of the animals. The DC Cat Count was intended to quantify the number of owned cats, outdoor cats, and shelter cats in an attempt to figure out how often felines move between these communities—and how to best manage the purring population.

Given the diverse housing status of the cat citizenry, the furry appraisal required a variety of research methods. For outdoor cats, cameras were set up at more than 1,500 sites across the city. These devices snapped photos triggered by motion—including a snapshot of a bobcat, which is not quite the kind of cat that researchers were seeking to catalog. In addition to these cameras, workers walked more than 337 miles of defined routes to manually count cats. Meanwhile, owned felines—defined as “those who are fed by a caretaker at least once per week”—were counted through census-like methods, using a survey of more than 2,600 (human) residents. That effort found that the majority of cat owners in DC are in their 40s. Data from shelter records such as those kept at the Human Rescue Alliance were utilized to tabulate the number of cats moving through shelters.

Loudoun County Public Schools warn parents about viral TikTok challenges plaguing school system

Loudoun County Public Schools sent out a letter to the school community warning about the dangers of several TikTok challenges encouraging students to vandalize, harass and steal random things on school property.

LCPS said although their schools were not hit hard by the recent September challenge, known as "Devious Licks," where students damaged and stole property from schools, officials are concerned about the continuous challenges to come.

According to LCPS, there are several upcoming dangerous and almost criminal challenges that have been widely shared for the rest of this year into 2022.

Here's the list of TikTok challenges the school system has accumulated thus far:

- October: Smack a staff member on the backside.
- November: Kiss your friend’s girlfriend at school.
- December: Deck the halls and show your b****.
- January: Jab a breast.
- February: Mess up school signs.
- March: Make a mess in the courtyard or cafeteria.
- April: Grab some “eggs” (another theft challenge).
- May: Ditch Day.
- June: Flip off the front office.

There are plenty of stupid trends that get started by some idiot that gets very little traction until some blogger finds it and boosts it. There were not hundreds of thousands of kids eating Tide Pods no matter that your local boomer says.

Kids have been stealing stupid **** for as long as there have been kids. Someone bragging about it on the internet is the next step in stupidity.

Neighbors Say Prince George's Home Looks Like a Nightclub After Dark

Some residents in a Maryland neighborhood are accusing their new neighbors of running an illegal nightclub out of their house.

They say in the past few months they've watched hundreds of cars drive in and plenty of drunk people leave

“There seems to be a party house, illegal underground-type movement at this one particular house down the street,” Karen Southerland said. “It's what we'd call an afterhours joint.”

The group of mostly senior citizens have lived in the Lanham community for decades. Their Ring cameras and cellphones have captured what appears to be nocturnal partying that sometimes gets loud.

Woody Harrelson punched a man last night on the roof of the Watergate Hotel, according to NBC Washington. According to witness reports, the actor was acting in self-defense.

Police were called to the Top of the Gate rooftop bar around 11 PM, where, according to police, a man had been taking photos of Harrelson and his daughter, then allegedly lunged at Harrelson when he came over to ask him to delete the photos. Harrelson punched the man in what police are describing as self-defense. No charges have so far been filed.

Black, female DC police officers say they were given ultimatum: Have an abortion or be fired

D.C.'s assistant police chief this week claimed that as an 18-year-old cadet she was told to get an abortion or she would be fired, according to reports from NBC News.

Chanel Dickerson is one of 10 women who are either current or former Black, female D.C. police officers filing a class-action lawsuit against the city's Metropolitan Police Department with claims that they were discriminated against based on their sex and race.

“My choice to have a baby was personal and it should’ve been mine alone and not for an employer ultimatum,” Dickerson had said during a community meeting, as reported by NBC.

In addition, another woman — Karen Arikpo, a D.C. police officer of 24 years — told Fox 5 D.C. that in 1997 her female sergeant told her class of police recruits the same ultimatum that Dickerson described.

Arikpo described her dealings with the sergeant that day, "If we were pregnant we needed to get an abortion or we would be fired."

Legislators want three counties to secede Maryland for West Virginia

State legislators in three conservative western Maryland counties are seeking permission to secede from the state to join neighboring West Virginia.

In letters to West Virginia state House Speaker Roger Hanshaw (R) and Senate President Craig Blair (R), six Republican Maryland state legislators who represent Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties asked the legislature to consider adding their residents to the Mountaineer State.

“We believe this arrangement may be mutually beneficial for both states and for our local constituencies,” the identical letters read. “Please advise on next steps.”

Garrett and Allegany counties are west of the West Virginia panhandle. Washington County, home of Hagerstown, is north of Martinsburg, W.Va.

All three counties are far more conservative than Maryland as a whole. President Biden won 65.3 percent of the vote in Maryland, and just 21 percent in Garrett County, 30 percent in Allegany and 38 percent in Washington County.

The counties are represented in Congress by Rep. David Trone (D) after a Democratic-engineered gerrymander in the 2010 redistricting cycle drew then-Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R) out of what had long been a Republican-held seat.

Virginia malls and shopping centers increase security amid ISIS threat

Police in Northern Virginia are on a heightened state of alert as a new law enforcement alert warned of a potential threat against malls and shopping centers located just outside of Washington, D.C. The threat originated with ISIS and is the basis for the alert, sources told CBS News

"We have increased our police presence throughout the county to include major thoroughfares, transit hubs, shopping plazas and shopping malls," Fairfax County police chief Kevin Davis said Friday.

Police said the increased law enforcement presence will be in place through the Halloween weekend and ahead of Virginia's gubernatorial election. Law enforcement officials said they are acting out of an abundance of caution, and as they learn more about the threat, the increased law enforcement presence could be extended through Tuesday's election.

I don't see it in this article, but my wife was reading a report that mentioned malls in Woodbridge and Alexandria as potential targets.

I’ve been reading about this. Apparently malls all over Fairfax county are loaded with police. The threat isn’t specific really, other than a general threat to malls. Apparently everyone knows a guy who knows a guy who has a brother in a 3 letter agency who says it’s a “credible threat”. All the contractors received a notice about this.

Doesn't seem to be MO of our agencies to release info like this about a threat. I’m sure they get threats all the time. Then it’s supposedly ISIS? They haven’t carried out a terrorist attack in this county and they want to attack shopping malls in suburban VA?

Seems a bit off.

Yeah from Isis of all groups, not sure what to think. We got an email from our apartment complex management asking us to stay vigilant and watch out for anything that seems out of place. Weird. Extra police presence is expensive, so I imagine they wouldn’t do this unless there was something credible behind it?

A local Nextdoor group mentioned this and immediately there were comments about it being a false flag operation to discredit conservatives because of the election on Tuesday.

These right wingers have completely lost their minds.

I’ve heard the opposite from left wingers, that it’s a false flag operation to heighten fear and increase conservative turnout.

We’re reaching the point where having a party affiliation should disqualify you from voting.
