Local (to the DMV) News and Events

We need a thread about local happenings and things that impact life in the DC Metro area.  This thread should be used to discuss local issues and to inform others about events happening in the region (that are not related to the federal government or national politics).

For some strange reason, I have been following this "controversy" closely because it is not far from my neighborhood.  A halal (islamic) butcher wants to open a store in Alexandria, and people are going ****ing nuts.  The main objections appear to be (1) they are going to kill chickens on site, which people are uncomfortable with (especially vegetarians) and (2) it will smell bad (and, amazingly, the main argument here is that it will upset the DOGS at the nearby doggy daycare).  Also, because it's Alexandria, people complain about the effect on traffic because they always complain about traffic.  Anyways, the permit to open was approved today or yesterday.

A retail halal butcher shop that slaughters chickens on site will be allowed to open in a small industrial area of Alexandria, a divided City Council decided Tuesday night, despite pressure from nearby business owners and their patrons.

The council voted 5-2 to approve a special use permit for D.C. Live Poultry Market, at 3223 Colvin St., just off Duke Street, on a block that houses three dog day-care or training facilities, as well as the city’s hazardous waste recycling center, a construction company, an auto repair shop and landscaping business. No residences are nearby.

Neighboring businesses, led by a handful of pet day-care owners, objected vociferously to the arrival of the market, owned by Abdulsalem Mused and his family, which plans to slaughter and sell an estimated 100 to 200 chickens a day, up to an estimated 500 on holidays. Opponents inundated the all-Democratic council with more than 200 emails and calls, even after a March 16 public hearing where they predicted noise, smell, traffic and parking troubles.

HELL. YES.

Fresh chicken is 1000000000000% better than store bought. It is ridiculously better.

Yep, I'll probably check it out.

‘You can make $10,000 in a night’: Thieves target used cooking grease

Quote

The heist began with a thief backing a large, white box truck up behind a Fairfax County mall around 3:30 a.m. one day in early April, according to a search warrant. The man wasn’t looking for cash or electronics, but something stranger: used cooking grease.

He siphoned about 150 gallons of the stinking, viscous liquid from a dumpster behind a Burger King, before a police officer patrolling Annandale Shopping Center busted him, according to the search warrant, filed in Fairfax County.

The crime is not new, but law enforcement officials say thieves are targeting the stuff used to make french fries and fried chicken anew because of a run-up in biodiesel prices in the past couple of years. Cooking grease can be turned into the fuel, creating a surprisingly lucrative black market for a substance most people wouldn’t touch.

Isn't this a Simpsons or Seinfeld episode?
