per WaPo:  Inova plans major new hospital, offices at Alexandria’s Landmark Mall site

"Inova Health System will build a $1 billion medical campus on the site of the vacant Landmark Mall on Alexandria’s West End, the hospital and city announced Tuesday.

The hospital system plans to anchor a walkable, 4 million-square-foot medical, retail and residential community in place of the soon-to-be-demolished mall site. The hospital will include a larger emergency room than the one at its current location on Seminary Road and will become the third Level II trauma center in Northern Virginia, employing 2,000 people overall, officials said. The complex will feature private patient rooms, a new cancer center and a medical office building with about 50 specialists."

5 Reasons to Avoid the January 6 Pro-Trump Marches in DC

https://www.washingtonian.com/2021/01/04/5-reasons-to-avoid-the-january-6-pro-trump-marches-in-dc/

This article is funny because the author starts out serious, the first 3 reasons are pretty matter-of-fact warnings about the Proud Boys and parking restrictions.  But about halfway through he loses patience that he has to write this story and the last 2 reasons are filled with hilarious snark.

Quote

4) Many would-be protesters hope to defy DC’s gun laws
People who say they’ll attend have reportedly traded strategies for smuggling weapons into the District. While these plans may be so much keyboard bluster, militia groups are among those who plan to attend the events. During November’s rally, some militia groups planned to station themselves outside town so they could swing into action if someone fired up a dip**** bat signal or something. There’s no reason to think this time will be different.

Quote

5) The public-health dimension
Many of these attendees have adopted Trump’s cavalier attitude toward the coronavirus pandemic. If previous marches are any indication, you won’t see a lot of masks being worn or social distancing taking place. Unfortunately, people who occupy an alternate reality can still spread Covid-19, particularly if they’re shouting or otherwise spreading droplets. Anyone downtown at the same time will be vacuumed, willingly or not, into the daffy worldview that coronavirus isn’t a big deal.

Northern Virginia gambling hall opening Friday in Dumfries

Northern Virginia’s first licensed gambling operation is opening up to the general public.

Rosie’s Gaming Emporium in Dumfries in southern Prince William County is opening Friday after a soft opening of several days.

The gambling hall has 150 machines that function like slot machines, but the payoffs are actually tied to the results from an archive of old horse races.

Rosie’s outlets have been popular in Richmond and three other locations in Virginia. State law dedicates a small portion of the machines’ proceeds to supporting purses at Virginia’s only horse track, Colonial Downs in New Kent County.

Here’s What the Biden Presidency Means for DC-Area Residents

Some tremendous shade directed at Trump people in here:

Quote

Sally Quinn, author and power hostess:

“[The Trump people] were always so uncomfortable. Wilbur and Hilary Ross probably went out more than any of them. And Kellyanne Conway was everywhere. But after she and [her husband] George started disagreeing with each other publicly, he went out a lot more and she went out a lot less. And then Jared and Ivanka—the few times I saw them, they were sort of standing alone. I went to one thing, and Ivanka came in and you could see people backing away. People literally started turning around and talking to each other like they didn’t see her.

...

It’s new energy coming into town. It’s invigorating. I think you’ll see far fewer five-inch heels and more sneakers, which is an enormous relief. And a lot fewer platinum blondes, and fewer false eyelashes.”

https://www.washingtonian.com/2020/09/18/drinking-alcohol-is-now-legal-in-some-montgomery-county-parks/

DC Mayor Just Proposed a Change That Could Loosen Up Public Drinking Rules

Quote

The Virginia and Maryland suburbs have both loosened laws in the pandemic to allow locals to enjoy a bottle of wine or a pouched ****tail in certain parks or outdoor shopping centers. At last, DC is looking to get in on the action. Yesterday, Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced legislation to the DC Council to create a “commercial lifestyle license” that would allow for certain zones where people could walk around with and consume alcohol.

The proposed license would be limited to pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use commercial developments on private property—think places like the Wharf, Georgetown’s Washington Harbour, or CityCenterDC. The drinking zones would be required to have security and signs to help enforce the rules within the designated perimeter. So, it’s not quite a New Orleans-style free-for-all.

The “Reopen Washington, DC Alcohol Act” also proposes a flurry of other liquor law changes aimed at “removing hurdles for businesses and providing new ways to bring in revenue,” according to a statement from Bowser. For starters, it would allow bars and restaurants to continue operating approved “streateries” throughout this year at no cost. (For 2022 and 2023, there will be a registration fee of $100 to operate from May through October.)

The proposed legislation would also eliminate the moratorium on tavern licenses in Georgetown (currently capped at six), allow restaurants to offer doggie bags for spirits (for now only half-empty bottle of wine can be packed to go), and create a new license for companies that deliver alcohol, among other changes.

VDOT Concerned About Trucks Crashing into Bridges, Overpasses

A string of unusual and damaging crashes has developed into a troubling trend on some D.C. area roads: Oversized trucks and work vehicles have been striking bridges and overpasses.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is imploring drivers of trucks and other large vehicles to be cautious, hoping to head off expensive repairs.

“Do not hit our bridges,” one overpass sign read. “Love VDOT.”

There have been at least six incidents in recent months, including two each on the Dulles Toll Road, Interstate 66 and on the Capital Beltway.  Even outside Virginia, WTOP reported a sign along the E Street Expressway in D.C. was hit Tuesday by a raised dump truck bed.

Police: 'Decorated' Montgomery Co. Fire Rescue captain nabbed during massage parlor sting

A decorated captain with Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service admitted to paying for sexual favors at a massage parlor, Montgomery County Police allege in court documents obtained by 7 On Your Side.

Michael Glazier, 54, of Knoxville, Md., is charged with one count of prostitution-general. The small, unincorporated community located along the Potomac River straddles Frederick and Washington Counties.

In March of last year, Montgomery County Police's Vice and Intelligence Unit established a sting outside of Massage Season, a modest massage parlor located in the Diamond Square Strip Mall along Bureau Drive in Gaithersburg. The undercover operation came in response to citizen tips of prostitution activity at the business.

"Glazier stated he located the spa earlier in the day by searching online for 'Gaithersburg Spa,' police wrote in court documents. "Glazier stated when he arrived at the spa... he requested a 1-hour massage for $80. Glazier stated when the Asian female entered the room to provide the massage, she identified herself as 'Abby.'"

Glazier proceeded to tell detectives that he stripped down to his boxers and laid face down on the massage table. At one point during the massage, the masseuse asked Glazier to flip onto his back.

"Glazier stated the female lowered his boxers and began to touch his penis and then asked, 'are you interested?' According to Glazier, he confirmed he was, and the female provided Glazier a 'hand job' to the point of ejaculation," detectives further outlined in court records.

At the conclusion of the massage, the masseuse handed Glazier a towel and exited the room. The 54-year-old told police he handed the woman $80 for the massage, plus a $40 tip.

DC no longer bed bug capital

The nation has a new bed bug capital – and it isn’t located near the Beltway.

After beating out Baltimore to climb to No. 1 on the list in 2020, the District fell to No. 3 on Orkin’s list for 2021.

The new king of bed pests is Chicago.

After two years in the No. 3 spot, the Windy City leap-frogged Baltimore on 2021’s list to claim the crown.

Detroit is currently No. 4, followed by Columbus, Ohio and Cleveland – which are tied for No. 5.

Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and Grand Rapids, Mich. round out the top 10.

Elevated Radiation Levels Detected in Neutron Reactor Containment Building at NIST in Maryland

Elevated radiation levels were detected in the containment building of the research neutron reactor at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, during a restart of the reactor Wednesday morning, according to a spokeswoman.

Several trained radiation workers were exposed to elevated levels and were undergoing standard decontamination and evaluation, a spokeswoman said. Authorities say there is no threat to the public nor to workers on the NIST campus.

An alarm signaled the elevated levels. There is no evidence of radiation above regulatory limits outside the containment building, "a special area (within the NCNR) that is built to confine radioactive materials,” NIST said.

Some nearby residents were alarmed that they hadn’t received an official notification about of the radiation exposure, saying they were unaware of the incident until News4 reporters informed them.

“In response to the alarm, staff followed established procedures and immediately initiated a shutdown of the reactor,” a spokeswoman said.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been notified and said it is "satisfied that people around and near NIST remain safe."

Virginia House votes to require colleges to make reparations for their role in slavery

Five public colleges and universities in Virginia may have to pay reparations to the descendants of slaves who helped build and run the institutions under a bill that was passed by the Virginia House on Thursday.

The measure calls for Longwood University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, the Virginia Military Institute and the College of William and Mary — schools built before 1865 —  to identify all the enslaved people who labored on their properties, to the extent possible. The bill was approved by the Democratic-led House of Delegates Thursday on a 61-39 vote.

The schools would then be required to offer full four-year scholarships or economic development programs to descendants of slaves. The project would allow descendants to attend any of the five institutions.

The measure would take effect in the 2022-23 academic year if it’s passed in the Democratic-controlled Senate. It’s not clear how many scholarships would be offered as it isn’t known how many slaves worked on most of the college campuses.

“HB 1980 is a small but important step to acknowledge and address that the foundational success of five universities was based on enslaved labor,” Del. David A. Reid (D-Loudoun), the lawmaker pushing for the measure, told Changing America. “I am proud HB 1980 has passed the House, and I hope that it will be sent to the governor’s desk for approval so that we can begin to address the multigenerational impact of slavery here in Virginia.”

Below is a film of the 1972 Fort Hunt High School Band that won the International Band Contest in Vienna Austria. There were twelve bands competing. The film isn't very good but the music is. My brother Doug played bass drum in the band. This is the first time I've seen this film.

He won $60K at MGM casino. Then he was shot with a rifle and robbed in his hotel room

Prince George’s County Police say two gunmen snuck a rifle into MGM National Harbor, burst into a hotel room, and shot a man twice in a hallway before walking away. This brazen robbery last August hasn’t been publicly reported until WUSA9 started asking questions.

Now, the man shot is sharing his story for the first time.

Nathaniel Nagbe was staying at MGM National Harbor casino hotel on Aug. 12, 2020. The Gaithersburg resident said he won big playing blackjack and wanted to party.

"I won $60,000 that day. I showed it off to a few of my friends, I invited a few people there," Nagbe recalled.

Nagbe was startled while inside his hotel room, he noticed the door started to open.

"I only requested one key because I don't ever give anyone another key to my room," he added.

According to the police report, a woman he planned on meeting later at the casino floor came into his room, joined by two gunmen.

"One of the men had an AR-15," Nagbe said. "The other one had, like, I think it was a Glock."

Nagbe said he was pinned down and forced to give the hotel safe combo. But when the robbers couldn’t open the safe, that’s when Nagbe said he ran into the hallway where he was shot in the back through the lower intestine.

"The pain was excruciating," he said. "It was unbearable."

Bleeding, Nagbe stumbled 17 stories down the stairwell.

He finally got to the hotel valet, who helped him call for help. 911 audio from that night describes how the three suspects walked out of the casino as dispatchers alerted patrolling officers of one: "One male, approximately 20 years of age. All black clothing. He had a headscarf on and he’s got a backpack."

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney charged Alicia McCoy, 25, of D.C. with attempted first-degree murder and several related charges.

Prosecutors also charged 20-year-old Barry Reid, of Temple Hills with attempted first-degree murder and several related charges.

That article makes my head hurt... threatening Metro because they won’t give away naming rights for free? What? I feel like there has to be something missing. Did Capital One pay for the station to be built? Nothing else makes sense. “Extract money” from a private company. No ****ing **** Senator, yes if a private company wants their name on something they have to pay for it. JFC...
