Metro Will Retrofit Faregates To Cut Down On Fare Evasion

Metro says it will spend up to $40 million to redesign its new faregates, making it harder to jump over them and evade paying the fare.

The transit agency released new data Monday saying 13% of Metrorail riders did not tap in and pay for their rides, amounting to 40,000 fare evasions each weekday during the first two-and-a-half months of 2023.

New faregates, which were installed across all 97 stations last year, now have sensors that can detect when someone jumps them. That’s the beep you may often hear in stations. Metro spent $70 million on the faregate replacement, which also added new features like larger and brighter displays, bi-directional access, and improved safety features. The old ones, installed in 1990, had reached the end of their useful life.

Metro board members at the time didn’t want to make the faregates too cage-like, similar to NYC, so it didn’t hurt the atmosphere of Metro stations. But new General Manager Randy Clarke has put a renewed emphasis on stopping fare evasion as the transit agency faces a fiscal cliff next year. The transit agency will likely have to ask local jurisdictions for more tax money to keep current levels of service going, but some public officials have called for WMATA to get its house in order before asking for more money.

It will retrofit all 1,200 new gates with swinging four-foot-tall laminated safety glass, saloon-style doors instead of the low-slung yellow paddles. The ADA gates will have two gates that swing open. The narrower faregates will have just one gate.

Cherry blossom traffic frustrations continue: How should you get to the blooms?

A major influx of visitors going to see the cherry blossoms around D.C.’s Tidal Basin and people parking on the street led to traffic headaches this weekend.

“When there’s a huge influx in traffic all at the same time, it obviously creates a pretty big traffic challenge and parking is limited,” Sgt. Thomas Twiname, spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, told WTOP.

On Saturday and again Sunday, drivers were trapped in traffic — sometimes, for hours — trying to make their way around the Tidal Basin, the Wharf, Hains Point and the National Mall.

“It usually fills up pretty quickly and what we’re seeing is a lot of people kind of continue to circle that same loop and get nowhere,” Twiname said.

People were parking on the 395 bridge...that's a ****ing highway, with no parking.

Use park and ride and the metro people. For crying out loud you're not all gonna get a parking spot at the tidal basin.

New PETA commercial has a message for Baltimore: Crabs are ‘clever little people,’ not to be eaten

Crabs aren’t people. Or are they?

In a 30-second video released Monday by the animal rights organization PETA, the nonprofit’s president, Ingrid Newkirk, calls the crustaceans “clever little people” — and urges actual people to think twice about eating them.

“Humans have always mocked those they find a little different. Crabs may look different from us, they may be small, but that’s no reason to harm them,” Newkirk says as the narrator of the commercial, which PETA said will begin airing on Baltimore-area TV stations starting Monday evening.

It’s the latest development in a years-long feud between the nonprofit and Jimmy’s Famous Seafood. Most recently, their sparring escalated with dueling billboards.

If a crab is a person, then I’m a cannibal. Fine and young (relatively). She drives me crazy. Resist? I cannot.

FAIL: Watch The Moment Carjackers Realize They Can’t Drive Stick

Two teenagers were jailed without bond on carjacking charges after trying to steal a car at a gas station in Germantown, Maryland, over the weekend. The teens were forced to flee on foot because they couldn’t figure out the vehicle’s manual transmission.

Surveillance footage shows the teens, aged 16 and 17, yanking the driver from vehicle, then entering the front seats. As they puzzle over the controls, the car remains motionless for about 20 seconds because they couldn’t drive a stick shift. Then they get out and run off.

“Unable to drive a manual transmission, the juveniles exited the vehicle and left the scene on foot,” Montgomery County police said in a statement.

Police officers spotted the suspects nearby and caught them following a short chase.

Multiple people shot following funeral for homicide victim in Northeast DC

Police say four people were shot following a funeral for a homicide victim on Benning Rd. in Northeast D.C. Tuesday afternoon.

D.C. Metropolitan Police are at the scene of the shooting near Stewart Funeral Home on the 4000 block of Benning Road NE. D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said the shooting occurred as a funeral was being let out.

An MPD officer who was requested to be stationed at the funeral by the family reported sounds of gunshots around 12:17 p.m. The funeral had let out around noon. MPD routinely offers its services to families of homicide victims when their funeral is being held.

Contee confirmed that four people were shot, and one adult male was declared deceased. He also says it appears that several people were specifically targeted.

"How low can you be of a human being to target other people at a funeral?" Chief Contee said at a press conference after the shooting on Tuesday.

Civil War Reenactor Pleads Guilty to Placing Pipe Bomb at Virginia Battlefield

A Civil War reenactor has pleaded guilty to charges that he planted a pipe bomb at a Virginia battlefield in 2017 and wrote letters falsely claiming that antifa protesters were to blame.

Prosecutors on Tuesday announced the guilty plea from Gerald Leonard Drake, 63, of Winchester.

Drake admitted during a hearing Monday in federal court in Harrisonburg that he planted a pipe bomb at Cedar Creek Battlefield during an annual reenactment in October 2017. The bomb did not detonate, but it resulted in cancellation of the reenactment after its discovery.

Drake was a Civil War reenactor who regularly participated in events at Cedar Creek until he was expelled from his unit in 2014.

He also admitted writing letters in 2017 and 2018 in which he falsely portrayed himself as part of a group of antifa activists who were targeting the reenactments because they believed them to glorify slavery. The letters threatened violence at subsequent Cedar Creek reenactments as well as an annual Remembrance Day Parade in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

New Maryland program to give high school grads money for college in exchange for service

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed a bill into law on Monday that will make the state the first to offer a "service year" for high school graduates.

Even before he was elected last year, Gov. Moore said he wanted to be known as the "service governor." In signing the Serve Act into law, the U.S. Army combat veteran says it will encourage young people in Maryland to care for their community.

"It is completely your choice," Gov. Moore says. "We just want to make sure that we are offering our young people the chance to make our state better and to give youth a pathway to do something that makes their heart beat a little bit faster."

High school graduates who are accepted into the program will be able to serve in areas like education, conservation, literacy or veterans affairs. After one year, they'll get $6,000 for college.

Graduates can apply up to three years after getting their diploma.

$6,000 for….a year of work?

Yeah, it's not really clear how it works.  If you watch the video they talk about $15/hr, and then a $3000 stipend at the end to go towards college, so I think it can be more than $6K.

VIDEO: Car crashes into doggie day care in Montgomery Co.

The owners of a doggie retreat in Montgomery County are happy that no one was hurt after a car crashed through their building earlier this month.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesman Pete Piringer, crews were called to the Sniffers Doggie Depot on Westmore Road around 4:30 p.m. on May 11 for reports of a car crashing into a building.

Video of the crash shared on the Sniffers Doggie Retreat Instagram page, shows a person coming through the door and speaking with staff just moments before a silver SUV crashed through the front windows, moves through the lobby before crashing through another wall and coming to a stop in the kennel area.

No injuries were reported but two dogs escaped during the incident and were later found and returned with their families.
