So last week I was really bored and rewrote the plot for seasons 5-10 in a way that improved on all of the flaws I had with the series ending. That's why I had to go back to start at season 5, mostly to introduce a few characters early enough so they can make an impact on the later seasons.

It's obviously crappy fanfic but i was really happy with how it turned out for something I wrote in 4.5 hours. I was pleased I was able to keep the political drama until the very end, really highlight Dany's downfall and set it up years in advance, gave Jon a lot to do in the final seasons instead of being relegated to a side character, and I made the WW actually meaningful while only giving them one additional battle.

This was incredibly cathartic. I'll never forgive the hack writers that ruined this show but I feel better now than I have for the past 8 months.

I hear you bro, I still think about it pretty often. I loved GOT so much, watched every episode when it aired from episode 1. Still can’t believe that terrible ending, it really is a shame. Could have gone down as the best show of all time. That’s cool you did that though. I’ll def read it

I’m not.  None of it matters. It’s just hard to care anymore

Yeah, I guess I'm kindof interested to see what they make of it.  And from what I've heard, George is somehow involved, like he was with the early days of GoT.  So maybe that bodes well? I never understood exactly why he stopped his involvement in the show.  Not much has been written about it.  But he actually wrote a number of episodes in the early seasons.  Then he stopped, and we heard about this bullet points for the ending of the story, and he went off to do whatever it is that he does when he's not finishing the story.

i guess I came at the show from the perspective of "show only," I haven't read the books, nor do I plan to.  I think the ending was extremely ham-handed, but I also understand kindof why.  The Double D's expected they would have a story to adapt, and then they ran out of content because George either got bored, or put characters in positions he couldn't figure out how to get them out of.  Or, what nobody ever mentions, had actually no real idea what the ending to the story is, and got writers block.  So it ended up as essentially fan fiction, instead of the source material.  And to try and cover up they weren't adapting anything, they tried (and succeeded) to make it look spectacular.  However, that wasn't really what the show was based on for most of us.

As for the spin-offs, I'm thrilled they didn't go with a "Long Night" spinoff, where we would be more in the magical world than the real world.  I have no desire to learn any more about the Night King, the existential evil, blah blah blah. I think we learned everything we needed to know about him.  What was wonderful about the first 6 seasons of GoT is that while it existed in a magical world, the magic was mostly secondary to normal human interactions.  Was it there, and did it play a large role in some ways? Yes.  Mostly through the Red Lady.  We got 1 episode of Hardhome, and then The Door, and a few other sequences.  But the story was mostly about normal human things.

I'm intrigued to see if they try and go back to the roots of the show, which was mostly based on characters and intrigue, or if they try and continue down the path of the "spectacular" which was season 8.  If they go the route of intrigue, with some big dragons, it might be a really fun show.  If they make the really big dragons the stars, then it's going to be eye-candy schlock.

I'd love George to finish the books, and then have somebody else pick up and do a new adaptation of the last couple of seasons, but I don't believe George will finish the books.  So that chapter has ended, if you will.

Well, the first preview trailer dropped ... It's been so long since I read World of Ice and Fire that I forget the actual story behind this prequel, but I remember it was damn good.

Also, judging by the social media engagement these posts have been getting, I would bet a lot of people turned off by GOT ending may tune back in and check it out.

not me. It’s too bad because I’d probably be really excited about it but I hope this show tanks and HBO cancels it. They should be punished for overseeing the complete **** show that was the end of GOT

I'll probably watch but I'm not looking forward to it. GoT last season and a half were pretty terrible but a lot of it was great. Not sure I'll care about these characters though.

Meh, I think this series will be much like the first half of GOT, because it's based fully on source material from GRRM, so there's limited room for HBO to go off-script on it like they did in Seasons 6-8.

That’s fine, it still won’t matter. Even all of this was the turning of gears through time and setting things in place that ultimately lead to the story of ASOIAF where it all went to ****

Yeah, I hear you very clearly and I actually really agree. I was immersed in the world of ice and fire for the better part of 8 years, and that ending was jarring. I know some liked it, but it was not at all what I had expected, and it did taint the entire history before that. Maybe someday someone will re-do the ending of GOT to at least make the journey to that ending a bit more satisfying.

But, I'll still enjoy this story, even though I know it's events lead to the events of GOT. But, even though GOT is the driving story for that world, the world of ice and fire book and the world that GRRM built really is more than the GOT story. Idk if any of that makes sense, but if you zoom out, the world that GRRM built is so much more than the 6 GOT books and story-line that has the most publicity.

I was late to watching GOT and powered through starting in the first few weeks before the series finale. I'm not really feeling it for this coming one. We probably already know the basics: White haired dudes and dudettes breed dragons, use dragons like living AC-130H gunships to build the Unholy Roman Empire, then go Habsburg on themselves until the firebug is crowned. Throw in some cable-tv level porn, grotesque bodily mutilation, and a few virtuous characters who suffer that grotesque bodily mutilation and we've got ourselves a season.

Several years later, I still cringe if I think back to the ending of the duel between The Mountain and the Martell dude, so I might not be the target audience.

I’m sure his wife appreciated it.

Im sure it’s not a coincidence that it happened during the only scene in the entire series where we saw any character bathe.

Let’s just say, I like Kit Harrington’s taste in women. 😂
