General Mass Shooting Thread (originally Las Vegas Strip)

So the text and the report of a missing gun both came after they learned about the shooting.  The shooting at the school that had just asked them to take their son home a few hours earlier.  Maybe I’m just naturally suspicious, but that looks more like two cold blooded ghouls seeking to cover their own asses, than parents showing any genuine concern for their son.

Yeah, it sounds like two parents reporting their car stolen, after they hear it was used in a heist.

Both covering their asses, and throwing their kid under the bus.

(Which I guess goes along with them fleeing, without the kid.)

Every mass shooting in the US – a visual database

A normal day in the US involves a mass shooting. Here, we track the incidents since 2014

It’s rare to go one day without a mass shooting in America.

Since 2014 the US has averaged more than one mass shooting a day, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. There is no official definition of “mass shooting”, but this database tracks incidents in which at least four people are shot or killed, not including the shooter.

This list includes the high-profile incidents, such as the Parkland shooting, the Orlando shooting and the Atlanta shooting. But thousands of other mass shootings have come and gone like any other day.

I don’t get what the play is here.

Does anyone know of a good read that outlines the case? All I got is they went after them for marketing to children? I haven’t even seen what the evidence was

Don't really see one but here is the court brief:  https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/19/19-168/118198/20191004151558181_19-168BriefInOpposition.pd

Quote

Respondents, who are plaintiffs below, allege that petitioners violated the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUTPA) when they knowingly marketed and promoted the Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle for use in assaults against human beings. Respondents allege that the illegal marketing proximately caused their injuries, which arise from the terror, pain and suffering, and death of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act preempts certain civil actions against manufacturers and sellers of firearms and ammunition. But it expressly does not prohibit “action[s] in which a manufacturer or seller of a [firearm] knowingly violated a State or Federal statute applicable to the sale or marketing of the product.” 15 U.S.C. 7903(5)(A)(iii).

The question presented is whether the Connecticut Supreme Court erred in determining that respondents’ claims under CUTPA constitute, within the meaning of Section 7903(5)(A)(iii), a violation of “a State * * * statute applicable to the sale or marketing” of the XM15-E2S.

They claimed the marketing was illegal:

Quote

As the complaint explains, petitioners chose to market the XM15-E2S as a highly lethal weapon designed for purposes that are illegal—namely, killing other human beings. For example, petitioners published promotional materials that promised “militaryproven performance” for a “mission-adaptable” shooter in need of the “ultimate combat weapons system.” Compl. ¶¶ 79, 81, 82. One Bushmaster product catalogue showed soldiers moving on patrol through the jungle, armed with Bushmaster rifles, and stated that “[w]hen you need to perform under pressure, Bushmaster delivers.” Id. ¶ 80. Despite evidence that rifles like the XM15-E2S have become the weapon of choice for mass shooters, id. ¶ 165, petitioners’ advertising continued to exploit the fantasy of an all-conquering lone gunman, proclaiming: “Forces of opposition, bow down. You are single-handedly outnumbered.” Id. ¶ 83. Petitioners reinforced those messages by specifying in advertisements that high-capacity 30-round magazines are “standard” equipment on the XM15- E2S; by contrast, petitioners’ hunting and competition rifles are sold with 5- or 10-round magazines. Id. ¶¶ 87-92.

Personally I don't really get it but don't really know the laws here on marketing a gun to the public.

Wait….

is this because the lawsuit was holding up the investment firm, that bought Remington arms, from dicing up the company to do their investment thing where they sell everything profitable for as much as possible and whatever is left over is left go rig as the carcass of what was once a very successful company?

if so then that’s so ****ing sad. I mean I get the parents desire to be over with it but that means this is the opposite of anyone getting what they deserve. It’s just rich people buying their way out of actual justice of any sort.

Looks like one got prevented:

Utah Man Charged After Boss Found Employee ‘Hit List’ on Desk

A Utah maintenance technician was arrested after his supervisor at the feed mill where he works “found what looks like a hit list on [his] desk” with more than a dozen coworkers listed as targets, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by police.

Kevin Michael Jerman, 56, a U.S. Army veteran who claims to have served in Iraq, is charged with making terroristic threats, which is a felony. Jerman, cops said, “had the firearms, knowledge, and experience to carry out the plan he had written down on paper, especially with his military background.”

That plan, the affidavit says, read as follows:

Quote

Bring 9 mm with 3 clips = 36 rounds; Bring 9mm assault rifle with 2 extended clips = 20 rounds; Bring Smith & Wesson .22 caliber with extended mags, 3 = 65 rounds; First take out two in shop 2; Then take out who ever [sic] is in loadout 2; Then the mineral office 3; Then whoever is in the hand add area 2 or 3; Next take out skid loader operator 1; Then the office take out 3. Then one in CUG loadout.

14 Total kills. Have to take out internet so no calls from landline. Build cell jammer so signals could be jammed. If police arrive take a position high up to snipe use .308 for this.

Jerman called out sick on Thursday, after which his manager discovered the note and called 911, the affidavit states.

“Jeff stated that Kevin has been acting strange lately,” it continues. “Jeff stated that Kevin has been wanting to work alone. Jeff stated that 2 days ago Kevin flew a drone around the work area… Jeff stated he then received another call from Kevin and Kevin stated he was feeling better and wanted to come to work. Jeff stated this is not normal behavior. Nephi City Police are currently sitting in front of Kevin’s house and witnessed Kevin exiting a vehicle not registered to him and entering his house.”

Police got a warrant to search Jerman’s home and vehicles, and the SWAT team was called in to assist. In the house, cops say they found multiple firearms including three 9mm handguns with extended magazines, numerous shotguns, and an assault rifle. Jerman complied with arresting officers and was driven to the Juab County Sheriff's Office for questioning.
