I keep trying this, but all of the stuff in the profile list doesn't show up...what am I missing??

If you are not seeing the profile .bak extension then your regular profile is corrupt.

I would go under Settings- Backup and Recovery and Reset - Choose the option with data save. Keep in mind you will need reinstall all the software that you had installed since you got your computer and that includes printer(s) and WiFi password.

Hopefully this will fix your issue.

Anti-Encryption Bill Passes Senate Judiciary Committee

The controversial anti-encryption bill masquerading as a child safety initiative known as the EARN IT Act refuses to die. A new version of the bill recently clawed its way out of a warm, shallow grave and passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on a voice vote on Thursday. Now, the reintroduced bill will head to the Senate floor.

The bill, as advertised, would remove some long-held Section 230 protections. In particular, it would mean that a company can be found legally liable for child sexual abuse material (or CSAM) that’s uploaded to their systems by third parties. Those in favor of the bill claim removing these protections will force internet companies to take a more active role in identifying and reporting the real problem of CSAM material. If passed by both houses of Congress, the bill could potentially open these companies up to a flurry of lawsuits. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who co-sponsored the bill with Republican Senator and Trump lackey Lindsey Graham, claimed the bill “is very simply about whether tech companies should be held responsible for their complicity in the sexual abuse & exploitation of children.”

But that description only tells one, deceptively limited side of the story. Civil liberty and digital rights groups have spoken out in droves against the bill, claiming it would roll back privacy protections for internet users and incentivize internet companies to engage in dangerous levels of surveillance and censorship far exceeding the purview of CSAM material.

As rampant as child pornography is, having some idea of what is being done to combat it, I fail to see how removing secure encryption is going to do much to help. If anything the biggest issues are manpower related - not accessing information. They have plenty of information. But building cases takes time and they have budget constraints.

and let’s be real here. Then outlawing encryption in this way doesn’t magically break the math of encryption. It doesn’t make it impossible to encrypt data. Whatever people they’re chasing, where encryption is the issue, are still going to use encryption… it’s not like their computer boots up the next day and is like “Aw damn all I can talk in is clear text now”

no. What happens is the average, law abiding citizen loses the basic ability to have their traffic encrypted when they use a service that would otherwise provide that.

the EU is an excellent model (compared to us) for a government that cares about its citizens data and their ability to protect their data.

If you’re someone that doesn’t understand this stuff all that well, or pay attention to this news much, my suggestion to you is this:

when stuff like this is proposed, go see what the EU is doing. If it’s the opposite of what is being proposed here - it’s more then likely bad for you.

that’s a good starting point.

Ok...is something going on with Google?  My sports page now says I'm not following any leagues or teams.  I follow many.

Last night, it said I had nothing.  A little later, it had everything, then lost it all again.

Oh, and my computer is more ****ed up than usual.  I can't even get a temp now.

@tshile couldn't agree with you more concerning encryption.

US government has been at war with encryption implementations they have problem with breaking since the beginning, throwing an excuse like child porn is jus a distraction from their big picture view in encryption.

Think prism program and need to watch everyone to be able to catch a handful of bad actors, if it doesn't smell right, it's because it stinks.

Back around 2011ish, it was revealed an NSA official on an encryption board purposefully pushed (and was successful) a standard the NSA already had a back door for.

I believe it was the standard used in the RSA token fiasco

No bull****, 2 year old got “fall down on the floor and have a 90 minute conniption” because we *checks notes* let his sister eat dinner.

Edit:  obviously i started drinking around minute 4 of above-mentioned hour and a ****ing half conniption and thought it would be funny to make a reprogramming joke. I’ll move to the parenting or liquor thread if I have any further thoughts.

This conversation reminds me of when we plug up some innocent AI to the Internet and it goes from sweet to straight visceral savage that needs to be unplugged within hours.

Products of our environment, sure, but if it's a pattern...its hard to describe seeing your kids do something like you or your wife they haven't been around long enough to teach them.  My youngest came out with my mean mug day she was born, oldest is a high energy introvert with relentless curiosity.

But with AI, sometimes I wonder if that pattern of being exposed to a bombardment of negative material (sometimes folks direct the worst messages possible at it for it to digest) and turning it into bucket of slime is because if you did that to a baby from thr day it was born, that's also what would happen.

Is the flaw of AI that it's too similar to how we ingest information, or missing code for morality and ethics we ask ourselves if we are born with or taught?

This unusual ransomware attack targets home PCs, so beware

A ransomware attack delivered by fake Windows 10 and antivirus software updates is targeting home users, using sneaky techniques to stay undetected before encrypting files and demanding a ransom payment of thousands of dollars.

The Magniber campaign, detailed by HP Wolf Security, is unusual for 2022 in the way it focuses on generating relatively small ransom payments from individual users, compared to what could be extorted by going after businesses and demanding large ransoms.

In many ways, it's a throwback to early ransomware campaigns that encrypted files on individual computers. However, Magniber is using innovative techniques that make it much more difficult to detect – especially for home users.

The attack chain begins when the user visits a website controlled by the attackers, designed to look like legitimate websites and services that victims are tricked into visiting in one of a number of ways.

"There are multiple ways the user can be directed to such a site. Either they register typo-squatted domains for common websites or infect websites with a malware that redirects the user to the final download site," Patrick Schläpfer, malware analyst at HP Wolf Security, told ZDNET.

"I also have a suspicion that the reason for the redirection could be a malicious browser extension, which is installed on the victim's device," he added.

The website suggests that the user needs to update their computer with an important software update – claiming that they're antivirus or Windows system needs it – and tricks users into downloading a JavaScript file that contains the ransomware payload.

Whattup nerds,

Looking for a recommendation on a Windows based desktop computer.  Just needs to do light Photoshop work and Office stuff.  On the slightly large screen size because I'm old and get headaches.  Bonus points if it doesn't have a tower and is like an all in one or whatever.

And go!

If you want to get rid of the tower, look toward laptops + dock where you can plug keyboard/mouse and a way better screen or two.

Works the same, but takes less place. And should not cost much in the end, but I would still recommend to stay away from any chinese product.
