I think 'reasonable expectation of privacy" also plays into it.

if you use this service, you should expect a reasonable level of privacy..  right?

If you're yapping off to your paid ..  whatever she is..  do you have a reasonable expectation that she won't sell your words?

she sells everything else.

I think it has a lot to do with character and perception too. We don't feel as bad when things happen to people that can take it or people that we feel deserve having bad things happen to them. Sterling is a married man that was caught making racist statements to the women he paid to have sex with him. He had a history of racism accusations. We were all willing to ignore the fact that his woman obviously did this maliciously and that he's suffering from Alzheimer's. I doubt we'd take the confused embarrassing rambling caught on tape from any Alzheimer's afflicted old man as actionable truth in every other instance but when we dislike the person we make allowances and Sterling was a scumbag for many many years.

A different mentality applies when men have their nude images/videos leaked. Men are tough and because society makes the life of every man so comparably easy to his oppressed and powerless gender counterparts it makes perfect sense for the Huffingtonpost and others to write mocking or celebratory articles on leaked personal media of male celebs while wagging their finger about JLaw and other female celeb leaks. Women's bodies after all, are not public property. It's bizarrely sexist in its own right but it's fueled by the group disturbingly misogynistic men out there that feel like they should be able to view women as sexual creatures for their enjoyment and then hate them for it. You don't see much of it on ES but that weird mentality is out there and in greater numbers than it should be.

First off, lmao at the line "oppressed and powerless gender counterparts" Give me a break. Women have more "power" and opportunity in this country than they've ever had in all of human history.

And there are tons of women that view men (and other women) the same way that you portray men viewing women. They are more discreet about it, mainly because society calls them sluts and harlots, where as men are lauded for their sexual conquests. But they are far from the naive and innocent creatures you portray them to be.

I doubt Destino was advocating that phrase at face value, particularly the word "powerless" as an absolute statement.  To respond with "well, women used to have it even worse than they have it now" seems like a particularly odd end-around in light of his point.

Just in case anyone is confused by exactly what is going on here.....

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/09/23/4chan-users-threatening-to-expose-supposed-emma-watson-private-photos-after-she-gives-feminist-speech/

The Cotillion Girls were issuing a tongue-in-cheek call for equal-opportunity celebrity exposure, but in doing so, they exposed what is at the very heart of the so-called “Fappening” — and the reason why Jennifer Lawrence, Gabrielle Union, Rihanna, Amber Heard and others were targeted while their male counterparts were not. The Fappening wasn’t just an opportunity for male nerds to actively disregard these women’s privacy for the sake of their own sexual gratification; it was a calculated effort to humiliate celebrity women who dared take X-rated selfies for themselves, or their lovers, or whomever — it doesn’t really matter, because it’s not any of our business.

That was disturbing enough.

Then on Monday, a user at 4chan, the Internet receptacle from which said celebrity nudes are emanating, threatened to release photos of Emma Watson.

Over the weekend, Watson delivered a well-received speech before the United Nations, marking the launch of a new U.N. women’s initiative called “HeForShe.” She spoke passionately about the need for men and boys, not just women and girls, to take up the mantle of feminism if gender equality is to be achieved within her lifetime.

She was rewarded with a countdown clock at EmmaYouAreNext.com, purporting to tick down the days until her own nude photos are released. That assumes photos exist, which they may or may not. Business Insider suggested the whole production was a hoax, noting 4chan users like to play cruel pranks such as this one for the opportunity to laugh at those who are duped.

This entire business is about "punishing" women in some way for some ill-defined manner of sin.

Yeah. Pretty much. Kinda why I stayed out of the discussion in here. Was expecting a lot of "Well the slut deserved it if she's gonna take nude photo of herself!" Posts.

Honestly it surprised me just how readily accepted and celebrated the pics were (across various realms of social media) instead of being called bout for their pervy and misogynistic nature in which the topic was discussed

Well, that is the dominant theme of 4chan, isn't it?   They are a bunch of angry 15 year old future neckbeards, and they hate and fear women.

In all honesty, I'm not that familair with 4chan. I know of its existence and the fact that pretty much every "meme" comes from there, but I don't know the culture.

But I think hatred and fear of women is the dominant theme of a large part of the Internet.

Yeah, it's a scary world out there. I love what Emma Watson is doing and she's a pure genius ... but I've also had a man-crush on her forever ... err I mean since she turned 18. If that was a true rumor, I would probably try really hard to avoid seeing them, but who am I kidding, I'm sure eventually I would. Ugh.

And in the end I'm not alone. So am I perpetuating the issue? Probably. Will me not looking at the pictures change anything if there are 100 million men in America like me? Doubtful. And yeah, I'm actually absolutely shocked that in the aftermath of the initial leaks that it was swept away without too much anger ... yet the AP/Rice situation is non-stop.

Well I'm in close age-range with her that that comment isn't THAT creepy.

But as for the viewing of the images, didn't say I was going to seek them out. My comment was more toward the response being more in the form of "man that sucks, but they shouldn't have taken them" than "holy ****, how could they get away with that, that's terrible" that came in the aftermath of the first batch.

I honestly don't get why they shouldn't have taken them. As paranoid as people are about their rights being violated, all of a sudden a beautiful woman comes along and shares some provocative nude photos with her lover and its stop the presses time

Wow, like that is anything new, and like no one here (including myself) hasn't done it. Many couples do it, and for the .most part, its something to be shared only between the two of them, and is no one else's business.

Now all of a sudden its some morally bankrupt Shaming Olympics. And they deserve it! Yeah! Total excuse for me to jack off to her leaked photos that never shouldve seen th light of day and be damn near saintly on my end. But hey, she took the pictures... She deserves it!

Maybe its just me, but I equate that with it somehow being okay to choke to death on a piece of fish with the bone in it. Should've known better!

The pornographic quality of amateur selfies is crap in comparison to the mountains of porn made by professionals that any idiot can access for free on the internet. So I thought The Fappening was mainly about voyeurism and how people develop fantasy crushes on beautiful actresses. Seems pretty natural for the people that get attached to these actresses by watching their work to want to see them naked. I didn't think about there being this weird punishment gratification to it. 4chan is the most trollish place on the web, I would hesitate to try and conclude anything about their intentions because they don't care about anyone and enjoy pissing people off.

Yeah that's kind of what I was trying to get at. Everyone is about women's rights, and anti-domestic violence (against men or women) and the media is literally all up in arms over it ... and rightfully so ...

but with that being said, I was just really surprised by the LACK of media outrage against the "Fappening" ... and while it happened before the bulk of the Rice/Hardy issues with the NFL, it's like, yeah, they deserved to have them leaked for taking them. Or if that wasn't implied, what was implied was that while it was a shame, they should have known better. But really, wtf kind of reasoning is that? I bet if 4chan went around leaking naked pictures of our wives and girlfriends sent to us in the privacy of our own lives, we would be out for blood. But it's celebrities, so they deserve it and should have known better? Just didn't and still doesn't make much sense.

Is there any evidence that directly links Watson's threatened leaks have anything to do with her speech or that the nude leaks are motivated by an effort to shame women?  I believe it's entirely possible, hell I'd believe anything is possible on the internet, but I find that article curious in that it seems to add a motivation that isn't necessary to explain the behavior and didn't really back anything up with quotes or anything.  I might have missed something.  The reason nude leaks target women could easily be explained by the sexual orientation of the hackers involved and the increased attention that nude images of female celebrities bring.  Sexual gratification and attention seeking... wasn't the Nerds movie franchise essentially built on those two things?  (and absolutely no respect for women)

There is no evidence that the threats are connected to the speech aside from the fact that the threats were made immediately after the speech and were supported by 4chan posts saying that she may pretend to be a feminist but she is a whore like all other women.

So...probably just a big coincidence.

This time, unlike say when they pretended she was dead on twitter, is entirely because of a speech that everyone in the world new she gave because it was just such huge news.  Also random posts on 4chan should absolutely never be seen as people just saying things they think will be the most outlandish and hurtful.  Never.  Can't be a coincidence.  Nerds wanting to see nudes of stars nerds favor the most.. obviously about feminism.  You know what, I bet it was those mens rights groups again.

If that sounds like the kind of thing that would motivate hackers to bring heat down on themselves to you, great.  To me that sounds far fetched.  Considering the attention this is getting though, I could see self promotion and ego stroking as a motivator.  Whoever pulled this off is probably a hero amongst hacker circles.

This is not to say that this isn't a feminist issue.  Consider that while we are having this discussion people are still commenting on how great those stolen nudes are.

To be honest, the animalistic male side of me desperately wants to click through all of those photos...

Some might justify the Fappening by saying these women are "sex symbols" anyway, that they deserved it because they were stupid enough, or we shouldn't care and look anyway because they're hot. That's wrong, though, because the pictures these women took represent a part of them and a time in their life they were saving only for themselves or the person they loved. It's different than watching them on screen. People who put themselves out in public need to be able to save a little part of themselves that's NOT out there for everyone to see, and I think it's wrong to take that from them even if they've made it easy for us to do.

To me, it's not about oooh oooh sexy pics, it's about taking a part of their person that they never wanted to give.

Considering the way 4Chan and internet trolls have been going after females in the game industry the past 2 months I can feel comfortable saying they are doing this because she spoke out as being a feminist.
