The Official ES All Things Redskins Name Change Thread (Reboot Edition---Read New OP)

IMO, The best thing for Redskins Nation would be for this thread to just be closed.

I"m as guilty as anyone for helping to keep it at the top of the page, but keeping this thread open at this point just keeps giving the name-change brow beaters validation and helps to stir up the fan base.

Is there really anything else to say?

Let's close it and be done, and immediately lock any new thread to do with it.  We are just making the same arguments over and over and over again.  Unless the name is eventually changed, or something new happens other than an endless litany of assholes offering their opinion (like this asshole right here)....shut her down.

My :2cents:

and with that said....I'm going to follow my own advice.  This is my last post on this topic.  I'm done.  Come what may.

Sounds like the UCC had their mind made up regardless of what any supporters within the American Indian community thought.

I found the Reverend's comments, " unusual ".

I think the Redskins will be fine without them.

Well, the UCC is a heretical church anyway.

I disagree. I feel discussion about the topic is not only enlightening but is helpful. I have enjoyed discussing this topic and would be sad to see a topic as important as this pulled. FWIW, if the name changes I have stated it won't change my support for the team but would diminish the pride I have for the Native American way. One of the real reasons I love this team is the NA representation, the pride, the strength.

Call the team the Skins, AllSkins....representing all Americans. I do believe the agenda of the name changers if successful are only getting started. The goal is all mascots, to their own detriment/ my 2c

Would anyone really leave their church over something so trivial? Seems absurd to me.

I have found this thread to be interesting and informative at times, for instance I was unaware of the Irish being used as slaves in the West Indies (while it is an aside from this thread).  In any event the name controversy has  inspired me to learn more about the history of NAs and the word.  Here is an interesting article I found, though not necessarily sympathetic to the team:

Thought this was interesting.

Only one of these is proven harmful to children

skins-sm1.jpg?w=500smokin_joes_brand_full_flavor_ks_20_h_us

The Oneida Indian Nation reaps millions of dollars a year from the cigarettes it makes and sells. “We tried poverty for 200 years. We decided to try something different,” says Ray Halbritter, CEO of the Oneida corporation that also owns a resort casino and five golf courses and has struck a deal with Gov. Andrew Cuomo that would give it a monopoly on casino gambling across a swath of central New York State.

The Oneida cigarette-and-gambling conglomerate has launched a media campaign to force the Washington Redskins to change their name. Some see this as a bid by the Oneidas’ CEO to increase his national visibility as a spokesman for American Indian causes, at a time the tribe’s bid for a gambling monopoly in upstate New York has led them to be sued by other Native Americans.

Their campaign to force a name change on the NFL team has included commissioning a psychologist’s study that maintains the word “Redskin” is harmful to children.

Meantime, the casino Oneidas hope to stake their tribe’s economic future on encouraging people to gamble and smoke cigarettes.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among American Indians.

One wonders: If the Oneidas are so opposed to playing football in helmets decorated with a picture of an Indian, why don’t they have a problem with making and selling cancer sticks in little packages decorated the same way?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Man

Branding[edit]

A distinguishing characteristic of Red Man lies in its branding. Red Man was the first company on a national level to utilize the Native American as its brand image.[3] This type of branding, which many deem to be inherently racist, has been examined by a number of U.S. Representatives. This group of Representatives introduced the Non-Disparagement of Native American Persons or Peoples in Trademark Registration Act of 2013.[4] Though the Washington Redskins were in large parts the focus of the legislation, it could negate the trademarks of all brands that utilize the image of the Native American. In many regards, Red Man could be considered the predecessor of the Redskins and all branding that revolves around the romanticized or otherwise objectified image of the Native American.

No, I was making a douchey response to a douchey comment. I just get tired of "there's only one possible view" theory.

My "douchey" response to you presenting your anecdotal views as something anyone should care about as to whether or not the team should have to change it's name. if I was "douchey" then it was probably because I was still rather annoyed at a teacher happily flaunting his efforts to indocrintate school children into his world view. It was not to suggest there's on "possible view" in terms of the teams name. Rather, it was suggesting your anecdotal information isn't special and that your anecdotal experiences in no way, shape, or form deserve to have any impact on anyone elses views...especially ones based on actual facts rather than emotions related to isolated incidents. It was suggesting that fine...you have your experiences and that guides YOUR feeling. That's all well and good. But other people have different experiences, and yours are of no more value to:

1. That person

2. The team

Than any of yours.

You want to keep presenting that your just giving your personal view. But you're not. You're taking it a step farther and saying they should change the name. That's going past a "personal view" on whether or not it's offensive or whether or not you like the name and moving into indicating what SOMEONE ELSE should do.

Your anecdotal experiences are not justification for someone else to have to act in any given way.

It's ABSOLUTELY okay to have differing views on whether or not the name is offensive or if you like the name or not. I absolutely recognize there are some people who I think have very legitimate reasons to dislike the name, even if I disagree with them. I think your anecdotal experience is absolutely a legitimate reason for you to dislike the name, even if I think it's short sited to dislike it singularly on those reasons. However when you take it a step farther and start suggesting other people should act in a specific way because of YOUR personal experiences, that's where it takes it a step to far.

When the Redskins did the whole twitter thing against Harry Reid a few weeks ago, I sat down and wrote Bruce Allen a letter. I basically said I love this team, the history, the fans, etc. But, they need to understand their PR/Comms teams are doing more harm than good on this issue. I said that everything from their twitter feed to their facebook and especially the Redskins Nation show needs to be made professional in the worst way. I ended by saying I don't want the name to change, but if it happens, I'd like no nickname and would prefer the Washington Football Club if possible. Then if a name was needed, I'd live with the Warrior name they already own.

Didn't expect anything back. Didn't expect it to get to him. Just did it for my own mental health I guess.

Anywho, I get this reply today. Thanking me for my thoughtful letter, but while cool on team stationary and I'm hoping really written by Bruce. Didn't acknowledge the point I was trying to make....and some window stickers. So, I don't know I should laugh or cry. Probably a mix of both.

Didn't acknowledge the point I was trying to make....

Man, if we had some good PR, Dan Snyder would have never said a word, and this issue probably would have faded away. However, this is the Redskins we're talking about. On and off the field, we are constantly beating ourselves...

Right. My point was (and I wrote) that if they are working with some reservations/tribes to improve their lives. Then why not ask those tribes to invite folks like Bob Costas, or UnWise Mike or the other NA's who oppose this to the areas where they use Redskins and explain how they are offending themselves. To have that discussion started. Going after a pro team is easy. Going to Red Mesa and standing in front of a school/community of those people while saying "This name you call yourselves is offending yourselves....". If they can't convince all NA's who use Redskins for their High Schools or whatever. Then they need to rethink their message.

Why I’m Renouncing The Washington Redskins

It’s time to fight for old D.C.’s pride in its past.

Hadn't seen this on here yet. Mostly just came away shocked that I read a full length opinion piece on BuzzFeed instead of just a couple of unsourced GIFS and 8 MIND-BLOWING reasons an EPIC Redskins name change would be EVERYTHING!!!

Ahhhh yes. "I'm a lifelong fan but we must change the name cuz of ... Ummmmm..... It's a slur.......oh and GPM and Dan Snyder suck!".

Hope you get lots of hits.

Ok, I kinda don't.

Good luck with your blogging career. I'm sure you'll do well, given the tripe that passes for journalism today.

Why are you replying to me as if I was the one who wrote it? This is a name change thread. I saw a relevant piece on a highly trafficked website, I posted it, and I made fun of the idea of Buzzfeed trying to do opinion pieces.

Well Reid's made it official. He's boycotting our games until it changes.

FedEx Field just won't feel the same without his presence.

Good!  That's what all these "for the name change" people should do.  If you don't like our team, or its name, then don't watch redskins football.  Don't buy any redskins merchandise.  Ignore the redskins, and stay away from everything redskins.  NO REALLY...............PLEASE STAY AWAY!  The redskins have a huge fan base, it wont effect us one bit.  Hail to the redskins!!!
