Boss_Hogg
Are any atheists actually complaining? If they are, I'd listen. This issue with Native-themed nicknames has been going on since the early 70s at least. Dartmouth stopped using Indians in 1974. Marquette stopped using Warriors sometime in the early 90s. I think St. Johns changed after that. I don't know when Miami of Ohio stopped. I actually knew a few atheists in college that opined to have "Under God" removed from the pledge of allegiance. They also despised all teams with a religious mascots because they believe the teams weren't inclusive to all peoples. Anyone can be offended by anything and everything. Since we're playing the game of hypotheticals today, here's a scenario. What if we go 1-15 and end up with the #1 overall pick. What if Marcus Mariota is still the consensis top pick by May. What if Mariota and his agent decide to pull the Elway/E. Manning snub to the disasterous org who wants to draft him, in this case it'd be us. Mariota and agent could base their stance on the name controversy alone. Mariota is a native Hawaiian of Asian desent. Def not a Native American, but also not the typical white or black player born in the lower 48. How would our brass handle that in Ashburn? Does anybody think this franchise is geared to handle such a possibility? Doesn't it seem like an easy out for somebody whose really good, but doesn't want to come here, ala Elway to Baltimore or Eli to San Diego? I don't normally like the 'what if' hypotheticals in this debate, but I'm just throwing it out there. The above is unlikely, but not impossible. ugh 1) We have a QB 2) We have two Asian players (Helu and Lavauo) 3) We've had proud Samoans in the past (Joe Salave'a Kemo)
pjfootballer
I actually knew and dated a girl in high school named Marcella. Very true. If Mariota wanted a trade, we could get a boatload for his pick or as Bang said, he sits out a year. I thought Elway was part if the Blue Jays organization. planter
"..the only ones saying its not respectful have yet to provide a shred of proof...." Proof? If a significant number of Native Americans are offended... game over. "2) the same extremists insisting the name is derogatory are demanding elimination of all native american mascots,..." That mascot is on our currency because it's a tribute. That's a fight we can win. 3) "the fight song is 'hail to the redskins', so you wouldnt exactly get to 'keep' it. " Simple word change... such as Hail to our brethren" and KEEP " braves on the warpath. Again an obvious tribute.

Well, looks like both of our memories are faulty. According to Wiki, he was drafted in the 18th round by the KC Royals in 1979 (who also drafted Dan Marino in the 4th round of the same draft) But, George Steinbrenner had made a lot of noise about acquiring Elway and having him be his full time right fielder by 1985... and that was the leverage Elway applied to force a trade. His agent convinced the Colts that baseball was a real possibility for him. ~Bang
BleedBNG
So the e-commerce site Etsy.com has banned the sale of all Redskins gear and logos because they believe it's disparaging to Natives. They changed their stance on it. Got to keep selling that KKK stuff. Cheesehead is German a slur directed towards the Dutch. The word cheesehead is still considered to be highly offensive in Europe. Should the Green Bay football team fans stop wearing the cheese hats? Hitler used it.

Yeah there is a lot of **** going on in the country/nfl right now from ISIS to Ray Rice to now AP. Unfortunately the previous circumstances are what they are but I don't see the name change talk coming around anymore in the near future. Side note, I just realized that we do not have a Sunday Night game this year. What % chance is it due to them not wanting to carry Redskins games? Spearfeather
Side note, I just realized that we do not have a Sunday Night game this year. What % chance is it due to them not wanting to carry Redskins games? The League makes the schedule and I think if NBC had made a request to not carry Redskins games, they would have made sure that everyone knew about it. They picked up a divisional playoff game this year. Come playoff time, would they really refuse to show the game ? I don't think so.

pjfootballer
The name should honestly be changed to Washington Football Club Good tribute to our British brothers across the pond I'd kill someone if they did that. We're not a soccer team. I'd rather they be called the Washington Asswipes, then to be named like a soccer team. Bleh!
grego
The name should honestly be changed to Washington Football Club Good tribute to our British brothers across the pond I'm british- born in Cheltenham, UK- and I kinda hate that idea. (Not just cuz it sounds like soccer, but it sounds like ee just gave up). It is different though, and that's not bad.

I think we have very few national games, this year, because we sucked last year. Right, I understand we sucked last year but we have also sucked in years past and had at least 1 division game on SNF. It's not hard pressed to believe that they added a second MNF game if NBC is refusing (behind the scenes) to hold a Skins game. You know, a lot of NBC announcers have strong feelings against the name and the league also allowed a ref's feelings to get in the way of officiating our games so the possibility is there. You know, a lot of NBC announcers have strong feelings against the name and the league also allowed a ref's feelings to get in the way of officiating our games so the possibility is there. NBC's strong feelings about the name came out in October 2013, one month after NBC sports inked a multi million dollar boxing contract with Turning Stone casino. Turning stone is owned by Ray Halbritter and his business, Oneida Nation Inc...not to be confused with the Oneida tribe. They are two separate entities. NBC will go where the money is, and if the Skins are fighting for a division in late Dec against the Fecals, they will show it.

NBC having a game would give Costas another platform to spout off about the name. I doubt they are in position to refuse to broadcast any team. Diesel Hog
I'm glad we don't have NBC games this year. Two reason: 1) As autoidiodyssey points out, no Costas. That right there is worth it. 2) I hate night games. I don't like Thursday night, Sunday night or Monday night. I like when the Skins play on Sundays at either 1pm or 4pm. steve09ru
Oh yeah, I'm not complaining about not having to listen to them. I just found it odd that the season following Costa's rant we're out of a SNF game with an added MNF game. Just thinking if that was the case then what could potentially happen if others followed suit (again, hypothetically speaking and not saying if would). I can't remember the last time we didn't have a SNF game in a single season.

Commander PK
I'm telling you guys....if you are on Facebook and have yet to join the "Redskins Facts" Facebook page, you are in for one hell of an eye-opening experience when/if you do. Some of these Native American people who are for the name change are flat out nuts. Some of the correlations they are trying to make are about as crazy as they come. I won't post the pictures here, but there was some incredibly offensive stuff posted under the 9/11 tributes. The more I converse with them the more I believe these people are clearly on the fringe...there is no way the bulk of Native Americans agree with them. Most of my efforts these days are focused on that page. Here among the like-minded, there is very little we can do to fight back...there is a different story. Nearly 98,000 people have joined, with the same 5 or 6 trolling and spamming all day.
