Redskins claim LB Bryan Kehl off waivers

The Washington Redskins have claimed inside linebacker Bryan Kehl off waivers, a day after he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kehl, who played three games for Kansas City, spent the preseason with Washington and was very active, recording 16 tackles, two sacks, three pass breakups and an interception. He didn’t survive final roster cuts, however. The Redskins elected to keep rookie Keenan Robinson and veteran Lorenzo Alexander as backups to London Fletcher and Perry Riley.

Fletcher is now nursing a sprained left ankle, and Robinson – the team’s fourth-round pick out of Texas – is lost for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. The Redskins signed free agent Roddrick Muckelroy on Monday.

But Kehl became available a day later. He has a good grasp of Washington’s defense because of the time he spent with Washington.

Kehl’s agent, Michael Hoffman, announced the move on Twitter. It wasn’t immediately clear whose roster spot Kehl took.

A five-year veteran, Kehl has recorded 110 tackles and a sack in stints with the Giants and Rams.

REDSKINS CLAIM LB BRYAN KEHL OFF WAIVERS;

WAIVE LB MARIO ADDISON

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have claimed linebacker Bryan Kehl (pronounced KEEL) off of waivers. In addition, the team waived linebacker Mario Addison.

Kehl (6-2, 244) was originally selected by the New York Giants in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Brigham Young. He has appeared in 62 career games with five starts in four NFL seasons, and recorded 58 tackles, one interception, one sack, two fumbles recovered and a pass defensed, according to STATS, LLC.

Kehl spent the 2012 preseason with the Redskins, compiling a team-high 17 tackles (seven solo) with three passes defensed, two sacks and an interception. He was released by the Redskins on Aug. 31, 2012, before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 3. Kehl appeared in three games with Kansas City before being waived on Nov. 27.

Last season, Kehl appeared in 14 games with one start in his first full season with the St. Louis Rams. In 2010, he played in 14 games with one start for the Rams after being claimed off waivers from the New York Giants on Sept. 15. Kehl spent the first 31 games of his career with the Giants, earning three starts and compiling 28 tackles, one interception, one sack and two fumbles recovered.

Kehl, 28, played collegiately at BYU where he played in 48 games with 26 starts. He amassed 205 tackles (108 solo), seven sacks, 20.5 stops for losses, two forced fumbles and three fumbles recovered. He also recorded three interceptions, including one interception return for touchdown. As a senior in 2007, he started all 13 games at weakside linebacker and served as team captain, eventually being tabbed as an All-Mountain West Conference first team selection as well as earning Academic All-MWC honors.

Kehl was born on June 16, 1984. He attended Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights, Utah.

Addison (6-3, 257) joined the Redskins on Oct. 9, 2012 after previously appearing on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad. He appeared in five games with the Redskins.

Good signing. Surprised the Chiefs cut him - he had a very solid preseason here and would have had a pretty incredible one if he didn't let a couple passes slip right through his hands. Solid special teamer and can fill in on defense if needed. It's kind of ironic the Chiefs let him go right as we needed another linebacker experienced in our system.

Solid move, guy is a decent backup. We're going to have to throw everything at the wall to see if it sticks, honestly, we just don't have enough after Fletcher and Riley. If McClain is released too, could be an interesting couple days for the ILB position on our team.

I thought we released Gamble to make room for Kehl, but then I saw this:

Zac Boyer ‏@ZacBoyer

To make room for Bryan Kehl, the #Redskins have waived Mario Addison, according to a source.

Now I'm confused.

Damn! Hoping that was gonna say "Redskins have waived Brandon Banks to make room on the roster..." :ols:

Glad we got Kehl, I think he can help.

Gamble was on the ps, prob clearing the space for addison from active roster to ps?

Ironic? This is amazing! We were all wishing Kehl would be available when we heard Robinson was put on IR... I can't believe it.

I love it!

I certainly had him on my 53 man roster. I think he can start if Fletcher gets hurt. If we can keep him and Muck... all the better.

EDIT: I'd let him have Banks' spot and then let Dick Crawford return punts like the big pimp that he is.

EDIT X2: Looks like Mario Addison got the axe...

Source tells @ESPNRadio980 that the #Redskins waived LB Mario Addison to accomodate the claim on LB Bryan Kehl.

Gamble was on the practice squad. This just means that we are going to add someone to the practice squad. (maybe Addison?) Kehl isn't eligible and I don't believe Muckelroy is either. Addison should still be eligible through the end of this season.

Better than could be expected at this stage of the year.

Maybe he sticks around into next year too given everything else we have to fill with so little.

Doubt it goes much further than that.

Hail.

*Edit* I find moves like this interesting as to the board psyche. He looked great in pre-season. He's a career average back-up in live action. Folk do get excited over very little very easily. Or PO as the case often is with these pickups.

Perhaps ironic is the wrong word but you're saying exactly what I meant. Just kind of crazy that he is exactly the guy we had in preseason and he was pretty impressive for a backup player. All of a sudden we lose one of our backup linebackers and presto, guess who becomes available...weird lol. Not sure I would classify it as amazing because Lorenzo will still be the primary backup at both inside linebacker positions, but Kehl will definitely see plenty of time on special teams, a spot at which he was very effective in preseason.

And in a pinch I feel confident if he must come in on defense as well.

Ugh Ronald Mclain was just cut by the Raiders, this guy was a top 10 pick two years ago

Now that's someone we should be making a real play for. If we can rework his contract to fit our problems.

ESPN 980 ‏@ESPNRadio980

Just heard from new (again) @Redskins LB Bryan Kehl who texted to ESPN 980 "can't wait!!" #Redskins

Yeah. I'd imagine any guy worth his salt picked up at this late stage would be saying similar.

Hail.

Hasn't shown much of anything being in the league 3 years now. Just because he was a high draft pick doesn't mean he's automatically good.
