The Official Washington Basketball Thread: Wizards, Mystics etc

Bol Bol is a risk but where the wizards are selecting some risk is justifiable.  I’m sure they’ll lean on what their professionals have to say about the foot injury, so there isn’t much we can say about that.  No team is drafting a guy their specialists say will never be right physically.  Aside from the obvious questions concerning his ability to take punishment with such a thin frame (208 lbs at 7-2, yikes), I wonder about his ability to set a decent screen.  Bigs pretty much have to be able to do that in the nba.

What I do like about him is that he’s skilled.  Ideal nba players, even centers, are skilled now.  Everyone on the court needs to be able to shoot pass and dribble.  Center don’t need to be great ball handlers, but being able to shoot pass and attack a close out creates great spacing.

Im not ready to say Bol Bol would be my pick, but I’d understand the logic behind drafting him.  I expect he’ll go earlier than expected unless the medical options are dire.

I've read from different sources that Bol has character issues.  The gist was that some scouts think he's a spoiled rich kid who is lazy and uncoachable.

I wouldn't draft him at 9.  Maybe after a big trade down, but picking him is asking for trouble IMO.

I would much rather draft Doumbouya.  He's an intriguing physical talent too, and he has a reputation for being a good teammate.  He's 6'9 and has already filled in some.  He's an extremely smooth mover and he is an explosive dunker.  And he is a dribble-pass-shoot player like you called for Destino.  It's hard not to see the similarities to Siakam in his game.  And he just turned 18.  He could turn out to be nothing, but he could have All Star potential.  I don't know, who can friggin tell?

I like that high cross that Doumbaya does.  It's a move that's reminiscent of a more traditional slashing wing, but he's sized like a true 4.

He's an unorthodox ball handler, but everything he does on the court is smooth.  I read that he came to the game late, so that could explain why he's got such a strange looking game.  It's pretty though.  Legit below the rim finishing touch and soft looking touch on that strange jumper.  Release point is a little low, but the shot is rapid.  His left hand is better than advertised.

He only started playing five years ago, and he is extremely young for a prospect.  So he'll be raw and he'll take years to develop.  But I think he has a natural affinity for the game.  And he certainly has the physical capacity to succeed.  And I think that there is a chance he is still growing, given how young he is.  He could end up being 6'11.  If he reaches that height, with his hand-eye-foot coordination, that could make him special.  You don't find a lot of fours and fives that could have a legit handle very often.

There are some similarities with Siakam but you can’t teach reach.  Siakam wingspan measured in at 7’3 at the combine.  We’ve seen him use every bit of that in the playoffs this year.  Doumbouya has a good, but not freakishly so, 6’11 wingspan.

I agree that he’s an interesting project though.  Great athlete with a strong frame.  Scouting reports say he’s raw on defensive positioning and doesn’t anticipate doubles well... which are things you expect to read for 18 year olds.  Shot hasn’t hit at a great rate, but his form is smooth and looks good.  Nice high arcing trajectory too.  There are no real red flags suggesting he won’t develop into a good nba player.

Chris Miller alluded to something about Bol partying too much a few weeks back.  As plugged in as Miller is, I'd take his word on that red flag and Bol is probably a guy the Wizards will not consider at 9.

That's disappointing.  There is a lot of negative stuff out there about his intangibles, to the point where I believe there is fire to the smoke.

In terms of sheer talent, I think he's second in the class behind Zion.  Still compared him to Porzingis, and I think that's fair.  He is very quick for his size and unbelievably fluid.  Scoring tools from all three zones, including a back to basket game he uses on small switches.  Silky jumper with range to three.  He's got All Star potential.

But he kind of strikes me as the type of star player who will never really win anything at the NBA level as one of the best players on his team.  You have to be a great competitor to win, especially at the five position.  It is hard not to doubt his competitiveness.

It's going to take a great judge of character to figure out Bol.  If I trusted our FO and medical staff, I could support picking him.  But he sounds exactly like the kind of guy who would bust for us.

But, the flip side argument is that, this is a weak draft class and we dropped all of the way to nine.  At that point, there is some merit to the argument that we might as well swing for the fences.

So apparently the reason Ujiri would consider leaving Toronto to join our franchise is to persue a potential political career afterwards. I'm not so sure about getting a guy who just wants to use us to springboard his post basketball Capitol Hill aspirations but if he builds us a championship caliber team, he's got my vote for whatever he runs for.

yeah that sounds like repeating the mistake we made with Jordan, but at least Ujiri has proven himself as a GM.

I don't like all of this non-basketball stuff factoring in to our GM search though.  Why can't we do things the normal way and hire a GM who is a hungry assistant from a successful organization, with a strong scouting background?  A guy like that will throw himself into the job and be willing to work to prove himself here and define his legacy with this franchise.

That's what I want too, but this franchise doesn't seem capable of thinking/operating in that manner.

Seeing the way the Raptors fans behaved last night brought back some bad memories of Masai Ujiri leading those ****ing gutter trash fans in a "**** Paul Pierce" chant back in 2015.  He's been a real part of reinforcing their god awful culture.  That's not leadership.  He's brilliant at the job.  But I don't want us to have to sell out our whole franchise to go chasing that guy.

Time for DC to make a run at KD2DC again....he and JW can recover together and have a documentary about it. Wiz tank next season and pick top 3. Boom, championship.

Get Boogie, too, and have three players recovering from Achilles injuries. Why not?

I smell the sarcasm but at this stage of the game I sorta support this.

Givony gushes about Bol in that article about risk-reward picks.

I remember clearly that, in the fall of 2012, Givony had Rudy Gobert at #4 on the DX board as the process for that class began.  As the season went on, Gobert dropped steadily, until eventually he was only getting late first run.  That initial take on Gobert was correct.  He should have gone #2.

What if he's right about Bol too?

Doubouya, Bol, Hayes.  Those are our highest upside options who have a chance to be there at 9.  How should they be ranked?
