Why is Ladell our short yardage back?

Its Preseason where you evaluate now instead of the regular season. You place players in different situations to see how they, gasp, perform outside their norm.

How come Zorn didn't evaluate Betts LAST season. Why did he wait until now. Is Coach slow or sumpin'?

(Don't have to answer that)

Zorn probably did. You got to evaluate these guys every year. It's not always Betts either. Sometimes it's the D and sometimes it's our oline.

Betts is a problem b/c he does a lot of things better than average, but nothing really well or great. That constant C+ quality makes him a good comfortable back-up that a lot of coaches like. Thing is, I'm greedy and want more... even if it is only preseason.

I'm a Bett's fan and do not know if he will be able to fill that role. He needs the carries and have always felt he runs stronger when he does get his name called often. It was frustrating to watch last night and I had a great view of the action, but this is the Steeler's defense after all too.

Hopefully Zorn got that plan out of his system in the preseason, and now we can move forward. Only reason Betts should be in on the goal line is if we are going to run a swing pass. I'd like to see a true change of pace back, Dorsey, make it over Betts. Dorsey looked good running the ball last night.

Back to the original question - I don't think Betts is our short yardage back if it's a regular season game. But the criticism here is all valid; if CP is injured, Betts hasn't shown he can pound it in. His big year in 2006 was a long time ago and the line that did that is now much shakier on the right side.

Yards will be hard fought and he will have to grind it out. And what I've seen from him since 2006 is a guy who goes down on first contact and cannot break tackles unless it's a DB.

A lot of things make little to no sense.

Betts as a short yardage back is one of them. If this hasn't already been proven a fail I don't know what is.

So is not testing JC in the preseason when he has no future contract and still looks like a backup QB.

Moving a possibly great pass rushing DE to LB when you already have a DE on the roster who started at LB for a few years on another team.

Trading a 2nd rounder for a 35 year old 250 pound DE known only for being a Pass Rushing playmaker and expecting him to play LE as a run stopper.

Just a few that come to mind from recent memory.

That goal line play gave me flashbacks to the Giants game a couple of years back. Is it me or Betts seems to go down on the first sign of contact?

CP seems to sneak those yards out and as some other people mentioned has a nose for the endzone. How about using Mason as the third down back? I would rather have the speed of hitting the hole. We don't have Brandon Jacobs on our roster, so why pretend. Sellers is big and a great blocker but not sure if he is the answer in short yardage either, I think our line opens up small holes quick and by the time Sellers or Betts sees, the hole, it is too small for them to get through.

At this point I don't even know why betts is on the team he's an OK back up at best he should never take any carries away from portis because he doesn't have anything special that he can do that CP can't he's not a change of pace he's definitely not a short yardage specialist what exactly has he done to keep his job. Marcus Mason has shown again that he is faster stronger and has way better vision yet he won't make the team why?

he was used last year, and couldnt punch it in when given 2 opportunities, not to mention he fumbled the 2nd opportunity away

Yes, regrettably, Mike is an overrated short yardage runner as he does need the momentum of about 8-10 steps but surprisingly he's underrated when taking it outside.

Edit- I should check his red zone receiving stats but I seem to remember him catching a lot more TD passes over the years than Betts or Portis.

I still don't understand why we dont have Mike Sellers line up at running back on short yardage situations....Ladell Betts is not the answer in these situations because in the past couple of years he has consistently been denied. Plus this change will give portis some resting time....We have a brandon jacobs on our team and we must use him:point2sky
