Zguy28
Since when is Christmas a Christian holiday? I know a few devout Christians who don't celebrate Christmas. At least they don't buy gifts, get drunk and eat too much. They think such behavior diverts attention and is not befitting a spiritual celebration of their savior's birth. I try to gratuitously consume enough to make up for their material deficit. The Puritans didn't celebrate it because of its strong connection to Roman Catholic tradition.:2cents:

But they're just bitter 'cause the Pope has much better stuff.
Califan007 The Constipated
Christmas is as much a secular holiday as it is a religious one...and apparently early Christians merged their celebration of Christ's birth with the pagen celebration of winter (or whatever they were celebrating) in part to hopefully get more pagens to buy into the Christian faith. In fact, I believe decorating trees in celebration is originally a pagen ritual... So I think Christmas can easily be celebrated by believers and non-believers alike. Teller
WVU, you should do what feels right to you. If you want to celebrate, fine. If you don't, that's fine too. Frankly, there are two Christmases for me anyway. There's one that sees me bowing my head, in reverence, and lifting praise and song to my savior. Then there's the other that sees me living vicariously through my kids as they look out the window for a glimpse of Santa Claus and his reindeer; and jump up and down reading their note from the "real" Santa himself. (Whose handwriting they haven't quite figured out looks an AWFUL lot like their daddy's.) But in all seriousness, I believe in Santa Claus. Not as an actual person, with magical flying reindeer, of course. But as a symbol of the good in each person, be they Christian, Jew, Muslim, atheist, whatever. You don't have to be a Christian to believe in the jolly old elf. Nor do you have to be a Christian to celebrate the spirit of giving and fellowship this time of year. ohioskinsfan
My personal opinion is no. It is Christ's birthday. In my opinion you can't get all pumped about His birthday if you don't believe He is who He said He is. I would guess there are a LOT of atheists who do celebrate Christmas because retailers have made it very easy to "get into" the holiday spirit. I'm sure we all have already seen all of the Christmas stuff out on the shelves probably several weeks ago. Good luck to you and your family WVU. Vicious
Why are you guys thinking that Christmas is actually a Christian thing? First of all it falls on Winter Solstice, not Jesus's Birthday. Christmas used to be BANNED by puritanical Christians. It was seen as a day of debauchery.

Bu I guess you're right. I am so completely shallow that I am only able to appreciate Christmas because of the decorations and sales at the mall. .. ahh yes, the true spirit of Christmas is always illustrated so well when the faithful narrowly stare down their noses at people from the lofty pedestal upon which they've placed their own ass. For the record, you can't really have an 'opinion' on how people feel. It's my opinion fat women are ugly, but lots of them are married, right? Are those guys that love them wrong? I CAN celebrate Christmas for a great number of reasons, including the birth of Jesus Christ. But it seems that you believe unless you buy the whole pie and believe he's the Son O' God, well then you can't possibly recognize his value at all. Now, if i were in the mood to be as insulting as the above post, I could say something like I guess there's a lot of people who celebrate Christmas because their church has convinced them of a fairy tale about a big omnipotent ghost in the sky that will make everything seem like ice cream and cake after they die. But that wouldn't be very nice, now would it. Especially with Christmas coming and all. ~Bang
Prosperity
everyone should partake in seasonal holidays The winter is a ****ty time of the year for everyone living in seasonal climates. It's dark and cold, so it's a good time to take a step back and be glad for everything that you have, and not worry about how much it sucks outside. Hell even call it Christmas put up a tree whatever, who cares? It's not like the Christmas tree is a Christian symbol anyway, though you can probably do without all the baby Jesus stuff. expensivegift
I think it's stupid that Christmas has become so commercialized anyone can celebrate it. Even people that hate Gd still celebrate it. Not all atheists do but a lot of them make a mockery of God but they still celebrate. But whatever no one is going to stop you from celebrating it. I remember a Hindu friend I know celebrates Christmas. lol.
Destino
I don't care what anyone chooses to celebrate. What shouldn't be allowed is for Christmas to be changed into "the holiday season" because people like celebrating it, but but not the religion, and just decide that they'd rather it be secular. It's friggin Christmas and it has religious meaning. If you want to have a celebration similar to it without any religion, pick a day, let us know when that day is, and everyone can make plans to go to the mall early for humanist day. Christmas used to be BANNED by puritanical Christians. It was seen as a day of debauchery. yes indeed! in the 'good old days' of Presbyterian Scotland I can remember my dad having to head off to work in the ship yard on Christmas Day before getting off early - cant have too much fun! I'm an atheist and I dont take Christmas day as some way of me 'celebrating' Jesus but I recognise as someone else pointed out that in amongst the horrendous commercialism there is a wee moment in time for you and just your family and kids and I dont have any problems with that. By the way, most of us atheists 'had faith' at one time - Catholic for me. We just weighed it up and thought 'Nah!' :2cents:
