Cooley Eyes Potential Comeback? (Csnwashington)

9 years with the Redskins, think he can rebound?

33 isn't ancient for a tight end, but he did look a lot slower his last couple years here. Couple things:

He's been out of the league for 2 years, and his last stint was less than impressive.

I would also hate to see him anywhere else than here if he were to catch on.

He probably could be some team's 3rd TE, but is it worth it? Right now he's got a cushy job where he works 3 hours a day talking sports. I'm sure Snyder pays him handsomly. Maybe not NFL salary but easily six figures. And he just had a kid. His life is pretty golden right now.

It's possible he could have been playing all along if he had taken better care of his body (something he's talked about on the radio, not preparing or maintaining his body like a pro for many years early on). It's still something I hold against him as a Redskins fan. He took what could have been a historic career and turned it into a "what if" for me.

Loved Cooley and would love to see him again on the field, however, I think there is zero chance unless you think he is a better blocker than Poulson. he is still probably good enough to play for other teams and if he got the opportunity I would be happy for him.

Don't see it happening though.

If he wants that feeling of building together towards greatness that he feels only being part of a team can give him, he should look into a sideline position instead...I know Niles Paul raved about Cooley helping him in transitioning into a TE. The Skins don't need a TE coach but he should consider thinking about a coaching career down the road and maybe start on the ground floor now.

Exactly, I respect having the itch still, but he's delusional to think he could actually do it.  I find it hard to believe he's actually going to be as good as he was when he left, which wasn't very good.  Even being a 3rd TE is dubious.  You could get younger, cheaper, faster, stronger, hungrier guys to do what he would be doing.

It will have been 5 years since he had a season worth mentioning.

Only Jersey I've ever bought, great football player. Unfortunately, the 'I can be a #3 on any team' probably a lot further from the truth than he thinks.

This guy we have wearing Santana's old number has a good cut to his jib. I think you know what you get with an optimal Cooley, I mean a Cooley thats been doing cross fit for last 8-12 months- maybe a camp tryout. I don't even know if he's there, let alone ready to play football.

TE is a major need for us, because Reed is entirely unreliable. Further, to get a guy who can block would be huge. TE's can be mined out of nowhere and became major contributors. Thats why I'm curious to see what this 89 can do.

Last year I was on the Lions TE that broke his arm. I'm telling you, that guy (forgot his name, does goofy TD dances) has potential to be game changing TE.

I could maybe see him catching on with a losing team that needs a mentor and stopgap for a year. If he's truly busted his butt he MIGHT make the final cut on some team, but typically the 3rd TE is gonna be going to a developmental player and not an old geezer with maybe a year left in the tank.

If he's genuinely serious about this, I don’t think he will find a spot on opening day, but I could see him getting a call as soon as somebody's TE ends up on IR.

Love Cooley. But he's got nothing to offer this team. He was slowing down back in 2011/2012. He's been gone from the game for 2 years now.

This team needs to rebuild, not have 33 y/o #3 TEs taking up roster space.

He said it wasn't a Redskins-only kind of deal, but rather if any team in the league wanted his services. I don't really think the Redskins' TE situation is playing much of a role in his thinking.

At any rate, I read the article as he really misses being part of a team and all that goes with it. That's why I said he should consider coaching instead.

Agree on the coaching part. I don't think they'll be many teams rushing to sign a 33 y/o TE who hasn't played in 2 seasons. Probably has a better chance of breaking in as a position coach.

Another thing....in regards the to veteran combine, most of those guys going in said they were in good/great shape.  When the combine was over, and all the testing was done, it was apparent why each of those dudes was out of the league.

I don't even see Cooley latching on somewhere as a 3rd TE.  2 years out of the game, combined with a sub-par final two seasons.  Folks just need to accept that he's washed.
