Opinions of Chris Cooley's Film Breakdowns?

I've said this on many occasions, but I'm not a football guy.  I just love watching my Redskins (not so much, as of late).  I have been rather enjoying listening to Chris Cooley's film breakdowns on 980 in the week after the game, and was wondering on everyone's take?

As an example, this last weekend he feels that despite the obvious mistakes that we all saw, Griffin played well and had the team in position to win.  He rated our center and tackles well, but our guards?  No so much.  Also rated Helu pretty poorly.  Our Defense was just bad.

I didn't see any other discussions about these segments he does here on ExtremeSkins, and thought it would be interesting to debate whether or not we agree with his assessments?

One thing I've picked up from listening to his breakdowns is how it seems that Cousins strengths are Griffin's weaknesses, and vice-versa.  One of the primary problems with Cousins seems to be that as soon as he's made up his mind what he's going to do based off of pre-snap reads, he doesn't deviate despite the fact that the play might be developing differently.  Griffin, OTOH, doesn't read the defense as well as Cousins, but has a better eye for things not happening according to schedule, therefore why he has fewer turnovers.

Thoughts?

Cooley breakdowns are must listen for me now. Best analysis I've heard on players in games since Ken Beatrice back in the day. He just tells you what he sees with no biased agenda.

The critique I love to hear is that he works for Snyder so he and Steve Czaban are now "mouthpieces" for Snyder. Steve Czaban has now gone from "hater" to "mouthpiece"

I listen to these on my way home. When I don't answer the phone when he's doing his breakdowns. They're great. Clear, blunt and honest. He definitely doesn't sugar coat--much like Gruden after the Vikings game.

Chris is OK. A NFL gladiator and an artist!

Yes, our guards suck. Yes, in this

game the RT and Lich did OK but Skins still have a RT problem unless Moses "develops". Lich is on the fence.

Yes, RGIII is better at ball security than Cuz. RG's sheer presence improves our running game. And, yes, I like to use the word "yes".

He's normally really good. I find myself nodding in agreement to most all of his grades.

I like Lich but Cooley is way higher on him than I would be. He also gives Chester higher grades than I would think he deserves. Overall, though, I think he is pretty spot on with his stuff. Even on the defensive side.

Cooley is great, & his name carries a ton of weight in Redskins Nation.  that said...he isn't saying anything that a large group of us (labeled as RGIII apologists) haven't already been saying.

Compton played well...TW is, well...TW.  Lich actually has done a decent job at C, aside from a few mishaps here or there.  our Guards are the worst in the NFL.  hands down.  aside from LT...OG is possibly the most important role along the OL.  the pulling, the trapping, the picking up of blitzes, the need to play with a mean-streak, & an ability to NOT CONSISTENTLY WIND UP IN YOUR QB'S LAP EFFECTIVELY DESTROYING ANY SEMBLANCE OF A POCKET.  especially when you're trying to develop a QB into a comfort level within the pocket that he wasn't already blessed with.

his comparison with KC/RGIII is also very fair.  also, like we've been saying...the difference is that RGIII is a 5-tool player in baseball.  you draft him because he already possesses all the qualities you lament with any hard-working, self-made QB not having (see: KC/Dalton/Schaub etc.)...the blanks you need to fill in are all things that can be taught, if your pupil is willing.

the defense was atrocious...no denying that.  what we still can't suss out is exactly how much can be attributed to Haslett, lack of talent, or inability to manufacture pressue with your base formation.

ultimately...i have my reservations, but overall...when i take a step back & go over the why's & how's...there is plenty to like.  i like the development of some of our players.  i am seeing some draft competence (Long & Moses aside).  we have finally made some sound, financially smart personnel decisions in F/A (again...maybe except for the Orakpo tag).  all in all...there's a lot to look forward to.

i see a lot of people getting all upset over a lot of things that don't tell us the price of tea in China.  let's remember folks...aside from our homerish well wishing, this was a 7-9 team by most accounts heading into this season.  i still think we can get there if RGIII continues to progress.  i can easily see us pulling off an upset or 2 as long as the sum of all our parts do there...ummmm....part, on occasion.  if i were to do a mulligan, i might change it from 7-9 to 5-10, but still with the possibility to take away some real positives. unlike last year, our 3-13 was just bad all around.  there was nothing we could hang our hat on except for firing the Shanahan's, & hoping RGIII would regain more confidence in the pocket & thusly his mechanics would start to coalesce.

at the end of the day...there are some things that make me pretty excited about our future.  for instance...aside from all this infighting on ES & throughout the interwebs, we can pretty much conclude that the coaches...the ONLY PEOPLE WHO MATTER in this situation, have effectively ruled out KC as a franchise QB.  i'm glad because we don't need extra drama.  we need quiet, steady, consistent development.  this is a project...always was going to be.  we have helped ourselves in certain areas to where we may not necessarily require 3 years to turn this bus around.  to my eyes...we only really have 3 glaring weaknesses (coaching aside) in OGx2, DT/DE, & Safety-x2.  i believe the other Compton is good enough to replace Riley, at least in the interim while we fix the other 3 spots.  i also like our CB's, & OLB's for the short term at least.

26 pts against the Vikings defense is no easy task with a rusty QB, & 2 liabilities at OG.

/rant...

anywho...yes...Cooley's analysis is on the money in this ESers opinion.  i feel like he is pretty good at breaking down what is happening in front of our eyes, & not letting what goes on outside of that skew his analysis.

keep up the good work Capt. Chaos.

Yeah, I love it because Cooley has knowledge of how plays are setup, develop, and play out.  Opinion is one thing, and that can be fun to listen to as well, but when you have someone who knows what they are talking about breaking down actual game film, it is pretty amazing to listen to.

Also, as he gets further into his retirement, he has less ties to any current players on the roster so any accusations of bias should be ignored.

Cooley is good at telling how it is from his point of view, I listen to all of his film breakdown segments.

On RG3 -- the RG3 haters on the board, wouldn't dig Cooley's take.  Cooley gave him basically a B plus for his last game, he thought he played well.  In multiple segments, Cooley has said RG3's athleticism is still there, and doesn't blame him for all the sacks he takes, and thinks he's clearly the best QB on the roster.   His latest rap on RG3 was they have a Ferrari and running it in first gear -- meaning the team isn't using RG3 to the best of his abilities.

As for Cousins he was critical about his recent games.  He thought he was threw too quickly, too programmatic doesn't seem to have a knack to go off script, puts too much air under his balls (not enough zip) giving the opponents opportunities to pick him off, stares at receivers too much.

Cooley's breakdowns are great. What I like is that he has a good feel of how routes should be run, how blitzes should be picked up, how blocks should be made, etc. So he can see who is at fault and he does a good job explaining it. All I want is a good breakdown of the plays, and not agenda driven "analysis" that most shows give.
