How exactly did RR get the nickname Riverboat Ron?

Because way back when the nfl was still traditionally punting on every 4th down he went for it a couple times and got an undeserved nickname.

The nfl has since passed him by in every measurable sense of analytics and aggression while he's stayed exactly where he was like a dinosaur but the name has for some strange reason stuck around.

Yeah,he never really did anything to earn that nickname, Sometimes nicknames just happen.

Like in baseball James Shields was always known as "Big game James." He got that nickname from a couple playoff games in the minors, apparently. He was actually pretty terrible in the playoffs in the bigs. But he had the nickname so everyone juts assumed it meant he had some special clutch ability he didn't have,

Makes sense, thanks.  He does suck.
