With apologies to the "TV recommendations" thread. What Anime series do you recommend watching? Dub, or Sub?

I see that there are quite a few anime series recommendations in the other thread.   I think that there are enough fans, that it's enough to warrant it's own thread.  If not, mods feel free to shut it down.

Years ago, my brother-in-law turned me on to anime, and I've been hooked ever since.   For those of you who know nothing about watching anime, the draw for me anyway, is that the writing is clever, the storylines bizarre, (and often dark), the humor is typically adult and cleverly written.

I watch with subtitles on Netflix, Hulu, and Prime...but I do most of my viewing on the Crunchyroll app.  Here's a few that I like and can recommend, in no particular order.   Some I've finished, some are are ongoing with multiple spin-offs and movies.

Hunter x Hunter, Castlevania, Naruto, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Arcane, One Piece, (I'm up to episode 548...and hope to be able to finish it in my lifetime😆), Attack on Titan, Invincible, Demon Slayer, Baki Hanma, One Punch Man, Seven Deadly Sins, Chainsaw Man. That's just a partial list.    There are 1000's to choose from.

I'm also curious as to how you watch them, dub or sub, and what streaming service, Netflix, Amazon, Crunchyroll, etc.     What do you watch and what can you recommend?

Hmm, depends on the genre I suppose. I love cyberpunk and sci-fi anime.

Bubblegum Crisis (including Total Crash, Parasite Dolls, A D. Police, and 2040). The original series is super 80's mech suits with glam and hair metal.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Texhnolyze

Serial Experiments: Lain

Blame! (I love Tsutomu Nihei)

Knights of Sidonia (also Nihei)

Welcome to the N.H.K.

Planetes (sci-fi drama)

Vampire Hunter D and Bloodlust

Edit - I tried Castlevania but couldn't stomach it for some reason after seeing the early bar fight scene.

Samurai Champloo is my favorite. Cowboy Beebop is another classic. One Punch Man is hilarious if you’ve watched enough anime to appreciate the satire.

Do you want just Anime or the troubling named “adult animation” as well? If so, Blue Eye Samurai is good. Arcane is great. Love Death and Robots is a mixed bag with highs and lows.

I watch all styles and the "adult animation" as well.  One Punch Man is gold!

I forgot about Cowboy BeBop. I was pleasantly surprised at the live version too...they nailed a lot of it without getting too bogged down.  Same deal with the live version of One Piece.    I  I couldn't of described "Love Death & Robots" any better.  Some of them are fantastic....some are just WTF??

Those Japanese writers get away with a lot of **** that wouldn't fly here.

If you like these you must do us both the favor of watching Space Dandy. Its by the same writer and follows a similar theme. Samurai Champloo (also my fav) is Samurai hiphop, Cowboy Beboop is space cowboy jazz and Space Dandy is supposed to be something like if Zap Brannigan and Han Solo had a baby and he was trapped in a Disco Opera. I Have never watched it but its on my list once I can get the wife through Champloo.

My basic list I give folks when they ask @Skinsfan1311 is usually Steins Gate, Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood or the original, both a great. Brotherhood follows the manga), Death Note, Erased, Steins Gate, Made in Abyss (if you really want to hurt yourself), Baccano!, Steins Gate.

Also these specific Berserk Movies. https://www.google.com/search?q=berserk+Movies

I cannot recommend anything over Berserk if you like dark ****.

I like Pokemon. Even as a kid centric show the recurring themes are pretty interesting.

Lot harder to find the Japanese episodes with subs, but english with dubs are very easy to find. Personally I prefer watching in Japanese.

I prefer subs too.

I like the nuance, but don't understand a damn thing, except for a few words and phrases.   I always get a kick out of it when the use English words and/or phrases with that Japanese accent.   It's funny, when I'm watching it, if Fran is on the phone or making noise, I'll turn the TV up, even though I don't understand ****!

**** is a good one too

I think Destino just admitted to watching cartoon porn.

lol This is exactly why I find “adult animation” such a troubling category name. And the absurdity of making this claim on a site named “extreme skins” is not lost on me!

A little OT, but this reminds me of the very first time I went to ES at my new job several years ago. I got a call from IT saying "Hey...um, why are you going to a site called Extreme Skins?"

I had to actually show him the site to convince him that it was about football and wasn't porn.  :ols:

Anything that gets the Samuel L. Jackson seal of approval is automatically acceptable.

Back on topic, I've honestly never been that into anime, or animation in general. Not that I dislike animation, I just never really sought it out when it came to movies or shows.

That being said, after watching Arcane I'm way more open to it and have started watching a few other animated shows, though not really anime.

Attack On Titan is a great starting point for someone who hasn't watched any Anime.  It avoids the tropes that are most likely to be a turn-off to people who aren't used to animeisms.  And it's just really freaking good.

I heard The Promised Neverland's second season was a disappointment.  Which is a shame, because the first season was excellent as far as ****ed up premises go.

I enjoyed Code Geass: Lelouche of the Revolution.  Kinda similar conceptually to Death Note, but better executed, in my opinion.  Then again, most people seemed to enjoy Death Note more than I did.

I have two things to say about Hunter x Hunter.
1: **** the Chimera Ant arc.  I really didn't enjoy it.  It made no sense to me, and then the beginning of the very next arc introduced an OP power (that one of our main characters already knew about) that could have solved the whole thing in no time.
2: One of my favorite bands to listen to back in the day (Galneryus) was called upon to write and perform the episode closing theme to one of the seasons.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood was pretty good.

I'll have to go back and remember what all I've seen that I'd recommend.  I haven't watched in awhile.  Ever since Sony bought up Crunchyroll and blocked streaming without creating an account.

A couple more that I remember now:

Psycho Pass.  By the same people who made Ghost In The Shell.  Takes some solid writing to make a main character that I really like but whom I want to see fail.  It's a cyberpunk utopia/dystopia.

Parasyte: The Maxim.  A horror series with a bit of The Thing going on.

And since we're a Football message board, I think Eyeshield 21 is required watching.  It was sponsored by the NFL to get Japanese people interested in American Football (and to teach them the rules).  You can laugh at the shonen treatment they give the sport.

I keep forgetting about Psycho Pass. I need to watch it.

I bought the Parasyte anime and the live action movie but I haven't watched them yet. I have to finish my current shows (The Maxx, Spawn, and The Tick) before I start Parasyte.

I broke down and subscribed to Crunchyroll last year.

The Tick is hysterical!

After you folks have gotten your fill of anime and are properly weebed up in Otaku culture, you should watch Anime Crimes Division.  It's produced by Freddie Wong.  It's one big piss-take on anime and weebs.  Here's the first episode for a taste (they're only a few minutes each)
