Some of y'all may owe @Hitman#21 an apology! Check this out from a Lions reporter:

I don’t believe they would have offered him the job before ever meeting him for the in-person interview. Goes against everything Keim reported beforehand.

This is leaked by Johnson’s agent to combat the rumors that he wasn’t getting either the WAS or SEA job anyways, and returned to avoid the embarrassment. That story is gaining steam and this combats that.

And Harris & Co. won’t deny and directly say they never offered him anything and didn’t plan to because they’re classy and will just move on with their eventual hire. So it’s a safe gambit from Johnson's people, and he stays looking desirable, hard to get, and simply loyal to DET.

I’d be worried if this so called stud GM. Best new young GM in the league was running around chewing his nails and freaking out but that’s just me.  I prefer the idea that he knows a hell of a lot more than I do and he ain’t worried.

Actually, quite the opposite. You can learn a lot about a new manager by how they handle things when the plan goes bad. No plan survives first contact with the enemy intact. He was a highly touted candidate, but now we'll get to see what he's really got.

Johnson must have compared real estate prices around DC compared to Detroit.

Or he's....

A bunch of players have the contracts negotiated before they go to meet the team. Hell I did it for my last car trade in. I said if everything checks out I want this and willing to pay this. I don’t want to sit here for 2 hours.

That’s not a “standing offer”, although I also doubt this happened before meeting.

I must say given recent developments I’m starting to wonder if giving EB the job isn’t the best move at this point.  I know that surely isn’t what most of us hoped for, but at least he has a year in with the team.  Worst case scenario is it doesn’t work and he’s gone in a year or two and then we can try this again with a roster built by Peters.

Maybe if he is allowed to make the team his own he can have success.

totally agreed....even more so w/Aaron Glenn being on the docket to interview as well, what/who offers anybody anything but still talks to someone else about an opening, hire, etc...this is all saving face by Ben Johnson and his agent (as you stated previous) that's all it is....these podcasts can be so misleading w/info...just stick to opinion, heck i was actually thinking about doing 1 but just to much time involved

BMitch intimating that you're right

I’m not gonna get behind a group of billionaires not being willing to pay a few million more for a coach when there’s no salary cap on staffing. We’ll blow that on a random mid-tier vet FA who blows out his knee and barely feel it.

Makes things weird with Peters? Adjust his contract a few mil too.

I don’t think this is what happened because I don’t believe they offered him anything before meeting him like everyone else.

But if this is what happened I’d be pissed just on principle.

Again, I think it’s BS put out there by Johnson’s people to combat the stories about him feeling like he wasn’t getting either SEA or WAS job anyways, and pulling out.

And BMitch is the last person I’d listen to about anything.

If you’re not hiring Weaver and Glenn; just hire Quinn and be done with it.

Who out realistically it out there?

Vrabel clashed with GM. Not happening.

BB wants to much control.

Pete is too old and has been mediocre last 3 years: 7-10, 9-8, 9-8

Quinn seems like the best option left; so just give him the damn job. He should get us to point B and when he fails to go any further, we fire him and get the coach who will take us to where we want.

BINGO. I mentioned this before it fell apart. $$ would be the only thing to drive it apart and it did.

BMitch mentioned this on the radio today, that it got ridiculous for a 1st year HC and it wasn't like they were a million apart.  He alluded to it being a large amount, like approaching Harbaugh money.

Fortunately these aren't the Snyder days.

If it’s Quinn, how likely is it we stay with the #2 pick?

Quinn loves/fears qbs that can run.

He said something like-- you can play perfect defense but if the qb can run he can destroy it.

I think he might consider Daniels a solid possibility at 2.

I said it from the start: we needed to be the FIRST team to hire a new HC.

The new GM should have had the new HC ready and on his speed-dial. That's his job! To know people in the NFL who work as HC!

Now the situation is quickly becoming a PR fiasco.

The guy from Detroit said FU and now we're SOL?

A good GM should have planned for that and immediatly moved to his second option BEFORE the guy from Detroit talked to the media.

This is PR 101. Otherwise you end up looking like a chump.

If we were talking paying crazy money for players I'd agree with you.

But there's no salary cap for coaches and front office personnel.

It's a loophole that allows aggressive teams to gain advantage over more thrifty teams.

As a fan I don't give a damn how much it costs the owners to get the best coaches, scouts, analytics specialists and managers.

I just want to win and if paying more money closes the deal that's fine by me.

If Ben Johnson was head coach at this moment,  I wouldn't give a rats ass how much it cost to get him. I'd be drunk and happy.

Instead I'm sitting hear drunk and sad with no head coach.

The last thing I want is a team too cheap to compete-- not saying that's what happened, just saying that's not the kind of ownership that wins championships.

That a great question....but no coach will effect what happens at #2.  I think Adam Peters will select the best player available.  My hope is that it's either Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams or Brock Bowers.
