Say it nicer’: Hunter makes a familiar last-minute offer to Congres

You are aware that he has offered to testify in front of Congress if the hearings are public.  Unlike others that have been recently held in contempt and just not complied.  He's actually seems willing to comply.  And it isn't actually clear if Congress has the authority to compel him to testify in private.  It is generally recognized that they can investigate and compel testimony, but there is nothing written that actually says they can choose to make it public/private.

And this part is questionable at best:

"The Justice Department then sought a plea bargain so absurdly generous that it fell apart in open court, with a prosecutor admitting to the judge that he had never seen any deal like it."

At least being charged for a gun crime in his case is extremely rare which would suggest the plea bargain wasn't generous.

If you're going to post an opinion piece from Jonathan Turley, at least say that's who it is from before I gave them that click. What a clown.

Initial depositions behind closed doors are not unheard of though, right ? And, those are usually followed by testimony in front of Congress.

The transcripts of the deposition would be released to the public.

Save it. There is no protocol here Comer is following or that Jim Jordan is following (when he skipped his own request to testify). We saw what happened when one of Hunter Biden's business associates spoke to them. They wordsmithed it into a "Joe Biden was calling into dinners and making deal and......" then the transcript is released and there is literally a series of questions where they asked the guy if Biden talked business and he said in no uncertain terms "No".

If they wanted to ask him questions under oath, they would have taken the public version. They didn't not because the Dems would make a clown show out of it. But because they know they aren't good enough to perform live without it falling to pieces on them.

They do happen. I don't how often there are private depositions and then public testimony to say it is "usually".  I think sometimes that happens.  And certainly some times Congress starts by doing things in public.

Famously, the steroid baseball hearings are a case of where people testified only in public.

And there's nothing specifically that gives Congress the authority to a behind closed doors hearing/deposition first (based on what I know).  And so if he wants open to the public, that would seem to be reasonable/legal.

What do you think his holdup is with a deposition behind closed doors  ?

I suspect it is a few things, including @@DCGoldPants point above, and the Republicans lying about previous in private testimony.

The other thing a close door deposition does, it allows them to grill him for hours over small details and then if he makes one mistake declare that he "lied" (suggest that he committed perjury) without saying what he "lied" about (e.g what brand of tooth paste he bought at a CVS in 2005).

Why do you think the Republicans have refused to do it publicly?  It isn't like they only have one crack at this if it is in public.  They could do a public hearing, look at his answers, and then issue another subpoena if they want to ask more/further questions (in public) if they want.

The fact that the only reason to demand it, is so they can come out from behind closed doors, and lie about what was said?

Or, it would be easier for his friends in the media, to help him control the narrative.

Public hearings would allow his friends in the media to control the narrative? 🤔

Truth be told, Hunter Biden would probably be a terrible businessman even if he weren't an addict.

I also promise to never vote for him.

Also, truth be told there wouldn't be hearings at all if his last name wasn't Biden. He'd been allowed his plea deal and/or not charged at all like numerous others have been.

Maga likes to talk up witch hunts but can't see the obvious one in front of their own eyes.

you all act like this ^^^ is ownage.

the ENTIRE strategy of the GOP is always to blatantly accuse their opponents of whatever wrongdoing they have already done.   They don't think its going stick home (from a legal standpoint).  They don't care if it does.   the point is

1) to have some headlines that can be endlessly re-circulated through their bought media and echo chambers and

2) <much more importantly> diminish the impact of their own crimes by making it old news.

"everyone is doing it"

"actually, we aren't doing it...didn't you see that OneAmerica report...THEY are doing it..."

"why are you weaponizing the judiciary against my pure virgin soul, instead of investigating Hilaryemailsbengazihunterbidensdikpicsthesoutherninvasion ??"

"you must be one of those america hating antifacommietransdirtyimigrantblackies that i have heard so much abut on OAN."

"did you murder Jesus?"

pointing out the hypocrisy is like calling Nazis "mean" for invading Belgium.

He’s a ****up to a certain extent and has benefited from nepotism and other shady sh*t common among the political class. Would not hang out with.

Now, your thoughts about the encyclopedically worse crap that the previous administration did almost daily? If you care about principles, you’ll have thoughts. Hard ones.

And they did it again:

New Transcript Blows Up James Comer’s Entire Hunter Biden Argument

The House Oversight Committee on Tuesday released the transcript of the testimony of Kevin Morris, a friend of and attorney for Hunter Biden, and his statements undercut everything Republicans have said about the embattled first son.

Morris is a high-powered entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles who met Hunter at a 2019 presidential fundraiser for his father, Joe Biden. Morris has loaned Hunter nearly $5 million in the years since. He testified about his relationship with Hunter in a closed-door committee hearing last week.

Initially, Oversight Chair James Comer just released a list of paraphrased highlights from Morris’s testimony. Comer claimed that Morris informally loaned Hunter the money and does not expect to be repaid until after the 2024 election—or possibly ever. But the transcript shows this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In reality, Morris never once mentioned the possibility of forgiving the loans. Instead, he said he has a “100 percent” expectation that Hunter will repay him, and repeatedly states that he and Hunter have a series of promissory notes agreeing the younger Biden will pay back the money.

What’s more, Morris testified that there is a “balloon” on the loans set for after the election. This means that Hunter is currently making low or even no payments but will start making lump repayments in 2025.

The only person who mentions loan forgiveness in the entire interview is Representative Andy Biggs. The Arizona Republican has been a vocal critic of the Biden family, accusing them of criminal wrongdoing.
