Before the Corgis the Clumber Spaniel was the choice dogs of the House of Windsor. Edward the VIII, ya know the Nazi one, had them all shot and drowned after his father Edward VII death. 😬

We had hoped that an anecdote we read about George’s son, Edward VIII, was false, but sadly, we found several sources that also wrote of Edward’s disdain for the breed. Not a fan of hunting to begin with, Edward disliked the dogs drooling on his shoes. He was further incensed at his father’s refusal to allow him to marry the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. When Edward learned that his father had died, he ordered all the Clumber Spaniels at Sandringham to be shot or drowned.

Just went down a deep rabbit hole about Wallis Simpson.  Wild stuff.

The entire royal landscape of World War 1, and it's lasting impacts on society and relatonships into World Was II is a very fascinating deep dive.

The fact that Elizabeth's grandfather King George didn't let his best childhood friend and cousin Tsar Nicholas flee to England during the Bolshavik (Sp) revolution because he feared political backlash at a time when many in England were having a Red Scare moment ... basically leaving him and his family to be slaughtered to preserve the royal British line in a political move was ... rough.

  • Cooked Crack changed the title to Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s monarch for the past 70 years, has died aged 96

I'm going to openly say from my heart that the Queen, even in an age of decreased emphasis on the royalty, was a great and classy lady, always. She was the kind regent who guided Britain through wars and peacetime, a proud woman who's time as queen surpassed any other English monarch.

Some complain about the role of monarchy today, or how we shouldn't salute people like her.

I never believed in that.

The Queen and her family conducted everything with class, even when her own grand children threatened to leave the royals (and did). Her, and her husband Prince Phillip, were always great individuals and I always found those who criticized the monarchy rather selfish to insult good people like Elizabeth and Phillip who were just doing their jobs.

So adieu to the Queen, a strong woman who lasted for 96 years.
