Overview

The body type and jump-ball talent might be reminiscent of the NFL's Mike Gesicki, but Turner isn't on his level at this point. He's a pass-catching tight end who needs to hit the weights and add necessary functional strength to play through contact. He has talent but is inconsistent finishing difficult catches and needs to prove he can become a legitimate every-down catch threat against NFL defenders and not just a height mismatch in the red zone. Turner is a Day 3 prospect with limited blocking and special teams value, so he'll need continued growth as a pass-catching weapon to earn an extended NFL stay.

Strengths

Long body with high school basketball background.

Plays with confidence and swagger as a pass-catcher.

Can track and adjust to deep balls like a pro.

Weaponizes his size on fades and back-shoulder throws near the end zone.

Elongates and dominates 50-50 balls at the high point.

Athletic and flexible to catch outside the frame.

Length can overwhelm defensive backs as a blocker.

Good lateral adjustments to tag moving targets.

some of us did a my guys list, he was one of them on my list.  Good F TE.  10 TDs.  Security blanket for Strong, he was hard to miss when you watched Strong and I watched him a lot.

6 '6.  Nice size.  Seam routes.  Tailor made type of TE for Wentz's skill set.

I can get into this as a complimentary pick to Bates.

He is indeed.   F pass catching move TE juxtaposed to Bates who is a Y in line TE.

People are whining in the draft thread about how they are drafting "rotational" guys.   And we are drafting "old school"  IMO they are missing the boat.  It's the reverse of old school.  New school is about mixing and matching and keeping guys fresh.

Mathis is an example of that.  The third DT plays almost as much as the starters

Robinson is an example -- he can run in between the tackles as a gap-power runner to complement Gibson as an outside zone.

Turner is another example of this.  A move TE to work hand in hand with an in line Y TE.

Pros:

-Good catch radius

-Big receiver who fits a major need for us from a big target perspective

-Tries to block and on occasion has some good ones

-Complimentary piece to Bates, likely to fill a similar role to Sammis Reyes if he develops as a flexed out big receiver vs. traditional Y

-Big/Strong

-Contorts his body to make all the catches.

Cons (Trying not to focus on the negatives in the player threads but, kind of have to do it here)

-He doesn't play with a lot of balance. He is constantly falling down on the field, even when there aren't passes coming his way.

-Leaves too much space between him and the defender when blocking. Allows defenders space to work moves. Needs to close

-To piggyback off the previous, he doesn't leverage defenders and drive his feet to displace them, so when he does block he simply "gets in the way"

Verdict:

Good role player. The 5th round is a good place to search for those kinds of players and if you can find one it's a good pick. Can contribute day 1 as a big receiving target on a team that needs one, but if Thomas/Bates are healthy his reps will be very specialized if he is suited up.

Agree.  He wasn't one of my top TEs.  But he made my list as one of "my guys list" because he was one of my favorite type of players for later in the draft.

F-move type TE.  He's a willing blocker but not a physical blocker.  He needs to develop on that front  As for balance, yeah he got knocked on his butt on some plays by defenders.

The charm of him is he has some nifty double moves and can cut pretty abruptly to seperate for a TE his size but he needs to build some momentum to do it (some long legged WRs and TEs aren't as fast in short space) so he's better at it IMO on the 2nd level than the first.  And his catch radius and hands IMO are his superpower.  He's 6 '6 and with almost an 80 wingspan and he catches pretty much everything within his range.

Only 3 drops on 93 targets according to Brugler and it looks it too when you watch him, his hands are glue.  And he has some athleticism in that he will make some diving catches where he moves laterally with fluidity.

Yeah, I love reading about pass catchers who, you know, catch passes. Music to my ears.

It sounds like he's not going to be a lot of help, when he's not catching the ball. (At least not any time soon.)  But then, he's a fifth round draft pick. Nothing at all wrong with getting a situational specialist, there.

Stopped going to Wolfpack games after his Freshman year. Looks like he would have been fun to watch. That said, he could be fun to watch this next season. Big tall guy like that who can catch like he appears to do is a cool,"throw it over there somewhere and he'll catch it" option. :)

Yeah, I'm fantasizing about him catching passes.  Lots to be said for that.  Most important thing, IMO.

But.  You have to be able to contribute when the ball doesn't come your way, too.

I'm optimistic.  But "grain of salt".

Which isn't bad, in the fifth round.  Perfectly acceptable.

Got to see a number of Turners game because I was watching Carson Strong. Found myself intrigued by Turner and always looking to see where he was lined up. I am sure that's what occurred with Washington too. They definitely liked Strong so saw a lot of Turner.

Anyplace earlier that the 5th round would have been a reach.  I think he is nice fit with our other TE's similar to how Robinson is a great compliment to the other RB's we have. He is also is going to mesh will with the way Wentz and Howell chuck the ball

I had him on my list of 15 players that fit the best and could see with the Washington

Me, I just read about him, and I remember the days of "Coooooolllllllleeeeeeyyyyyyyy!!!!!!"

Dude with Velcro hands who can move the chains on 3rd and 8, and maybe 3rd and goal on the 8, can be really popular.

Might be my favorite pick in the whole draft class.

Dude is raw. If he gets stronger (especially in his legs) and works on his route tree, watch out. This dude could really be something. Only played TE for two years and is ascending. Glad he declared and didn't go back to school because he definitely wouldn't be a 5th rounder next year.

Red zone packages of Brian Robinson + Bates inline and Turner + Sims split out wide? Watch out.

This is one of my favorite picks, too.  I'm not so sure if I should be concerned with the lack of pass protection/blocking.  He was drafted for the fact that he's a big guy, big target with a big catch radius.   He's an inch taller than Gronk.

Granted, it's all about pass catching with him but I'm wondering if he can be coached up into a good blocker.

w/ Thomas injury schedule we certainly needed another TE.

Also helps provide a nice Red Zone target w/ his size.

I can dig it.

Yeah. I am guessing there is a chance Thomas sits on IR for most of the season. And Reyes showed nothing last year. We needed a player at TE. Added a UDFA as well at the position.

I live in Reno and am a big Wolf Pack fan.  Had a lot of fun watching Strong, Turner and Doubs play these last couple of years.  If anyone is interested, there is some local interviews with him in the link below.  I am hopeful that he'll be a good compliment to Bates, he's a converted WR so still learning the position.  He does have some drops here and there but may be a good red zone target.  All in all I like the pick.
