Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Seems like what we have been doing…

To a large extent the article points to not giving Pooty the time to catch his breath and consolidate his forces for a renewed effort. Ukrainians know that their most dangerous enemy is not Russian conscripts, it is American indifference and boredom. That has been and remains an ongoing effort.

IMO there is quite a bit more we could do to degrade capabilities apart from more toys that go boom.

One thing we need to focus on is the pipeline of western tech reaching Russia thru Iran, Turkey and India.

Make it harder for their disinformation to escape and multiply.

Make more info available inside of Russia.

We could start flexing some international efforts to get some of the fence riders to pick a side, either in supplying Russia or buying their goods.

Politically we could be touting rearming/uparming our own forces and sifting existing stocks downward to NG units, allowing them to release "older" surplus materiel Ukraineward. There are National Guard units in this country better equipped than frontline Ukrainian ones. You could retask a lot of that without some loud battle in Congress about appropriations.

HIMARs are glitzy, 155s are ubiquitous, crank up ammo runs as a jobs boost.

Kremlin says no chance of peace with Kyiv after Zelensky Washington trip

The Kremlin said that nothing good would come from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's trip to Washington on Wednesday and that Russia saw no chance of peace talks with Kyiv.

In a call with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that continued Western arms supplies to Ukraine would lead to a "deepening" of the conflict - something which could backfire on Kyiv, he warned.

"The supply of weapons continues and the range of supplied weapons is expanding. All of this, of course, leads to an aggravation of the conflict. This does not bode well for Ukraine," Peskov said.

Putin says gov’t providing Russian army ‘everything it asks for’

President Vladimir Putin has said the Russian army must learn from and fix the problems it suffered in Ukraine and promised to give the military whatever it needed to prosecute the 10-month-long war.

In a speech during a televised meeting with senior military officials in Moscow on Wednesday, Putin said there were no financial limits on what the government would provide in terms of equipment and hardware.

“We have no funding restrictions. The country and the government are providing everything that the army asks for,” he said.

Russia's Only Aircraft Carrier Catches Fire

fire broke out on the flagship of the Russian Navy, according to local media reports.

The blaze started on the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's only aircraft carrier, while it was docked at the Zvyozdochka shipyard in the Barents Sea port city of Murmansk, located in the far north-west of Russia, news agency Tass said.

An emergency services source told the agency on Thursday morning that 20 people had been evacuated, the fire was extinguished and that "there were no casualties."

Alexei Rakhmanov, head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), which is overseeing renovation of the vessel, told RIA Novosti that the incident occurred during repair work.

The Admiral Kuznetsov has been out of service and in dry dock for repairs since 2018.

Right.

I can’t imagine planning a war and starting it while your only aircraft carrier was in for repairs.

Reading up on it, that ship is a disaster. They had a tugboat follow it to Syria, because the propulsion system is so unreliable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_aircraft_carrier_Admiral_Kuznetsov

When it was operating near Syria, its arresting gear broke twice, which resulted in 2 jets going in the water, one in November 2016, one in December that year. The Russian Navy suspended operations on it after that. It went back to Russia for refit, in early 2017, so it's really been out of service for close to 6 years at this point.

During that time, a 70 ton crane fell on it, putting a 200 square foot hole in its deck. It has caught on fire at least twice (one of those times being yesterday), one of the fires caused 2 fatalities.

The Russians are saying they expect it to return to service in 2024. There is no doubt in my mind that date will slip. Assuming they do get it in service in 2024, that's 7 to 8 years out of service.

They're talking about adding 15 years to its time in service through this refit. Assuming they do get that, I'd imagine most of that time it will be in port, being worked on further.

I hope they keep pouring money into it.

There's your problem.  They named it the Kuzntesov.  Should have named it the Ovechkin; that Russian machine never breaks.

Maybe the plan was never to fix their carrier.

They probably didn't want to spend the money to build a new one, and its the only one in their fleet, so if you remove it suddenly you can't claim you vaunted navel fleet has a carrier.

Or

You put it in dry dock for 4 years. Your Navy does not lose face, and you don't have to repair a massively out of date nightmare of a ship that is falling apart.

Does an aircraft carrier matter much for waging war against such a close neighbor?

I would think the unknown consequences of starting a war would mean you’d want it available.

but they suck at everything so I guess it’s a bit much to expect having a functioning aircraft carrier to ultimately matter at all
