Best schools in the ****ing nation, and we elect a ****ing Trumpkin on the platform that our schools are failing.  People are ****ing stupid.

It was a natural backlash to the pandemic.  Kids struggled in school during Covid...a lot of them failed.  In particular in high school.  There is a real need for after school and make up classes to help with credit recovery so they can graduate with their group and without an embarrassingly low GPA.  My kid is in this position.  Went from straight A's to literally failing everything in one year.  This year...back to straight A's (bit of a long story there to be sure).  He wasn't the only one in his class to struggle like this.  I'd say a good 10% of kids just could not handle the online learning, maybe more.  It was a real shock to some of them, and many just could not adapt to the change quick enough.

Now I'm in NM and not VA, but schools here are pretty much continuing on as normal and not really putting anything into trying to help the kids that struggled and fell behind during the Covid year.  I suspect its similar across the US.  So far the official solution is "We'll just graduate him anyway even if he doesn't actually have enough credits to earn a diploma".  Its a real source of frustration...and the natural thoughtless backlash from parents is to throw out the people in charge in the hopes that the new guy will get something done for their kid now...clock is ticking for the high schoolers after all.

You might have the best schools in the nation in VA...but I suspect a lot of parents aren't seeing those schools respond to their kids failing during Covid, and are venting their frustration on the party that was in charge.  Its stupid to think voting for the other guy will do anything, especially when the other guys are pretty much what is causing the pandemic to drag out in the first place and have actively pushed an anti-education agenda, but understandable.  The correct answer, of course, is to roll up your sleeves and work for your kid yourself: my son is digging out with a combination of home schooling and dual enrollments: no fun for him or me, but its gotta be done.  I wish the state would marshal resources to help kids like him, but understand their resources are stretched thin as it is.

In any case, just adding a perspective.  The republican party has done a marvelous job of identifying fears and exploiting them...fear your kid is failing and the government isn't helping incites a visceral response and should easily be enough votes to swing the next few elections.  I certainly think it did in Virginia.  I think it was less "CRT bad" and more "my kid is failing, I see no help coming, and all you democrats are talking about is "Trump Bad"" for the swing voters.  Anyone that voted based on CRT was likely gonna vote republican anyway.

Maryland had the best ranked schools and then we elected a Republican... And then we didn't. Then his PAC funded opposition to the Commission to overhaul and modernize schools. Good thing we have a veto proof majority in the MD House and Senate!

I don't doubt or downplay legitimate concerns with schools and how to properly transition "back to normal" and how to bridge the gap for the students who struggled during the pandemic and now  might be behind where they should be.  The problem is none of that was in any campaign, nor any solutions being proposed.   While I see your post being genuine and full of real concerns that absolutely should be addressed, I feel like it is somewhat of a bait & switch where after the Virginia election it's suddenly "no no, it's not about what they were campaigning on and hammering away at every single hour of the day, it's reaaaaally about...."  because that wasn't what was being communicated. It's not like parents who vote democratic think schools are doing perfectly fine in all areas either, but they sat back and watched what it is being turned into by right-wing candidates and and decided to sit out on that madness out.

Gov. McMaster requests investigation into obscene materials in public school libraries

Gov. Henry McMaster has requested South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman immediately begin an investigation into the presence of obscene and pornographic materials in public schools in South Carolina.

The governor made the request in a letter to Spearman after he received examples of pornographic materials found in schools from concerned parents in Fort Mill.

The governor has notified SLED to evaluate whether any state laws have been broken as a result.

“... It is my understanding that concerned parents were recently required to petition the Fort Mill School District to remove a book from a school’s physical or digital library, titled Gender Queer: A Memoir, by Maia Kobabe,” McMaster wrote in the letter. “If school personnel had performed even a cursory review in this particular instance, it would have revealed that the book contains sexually explicit and pornographic depictions, which easily meet or exceed the statutory definition of obscenity.”

Poway Unified Takes Board Meetings Online Over Fear of Threatening Crowds

The Poway Unified School District says school board members and their families are receiving death threats.

The Poway Unified School District voted unanimously earlier this week to take its school board meetings virtual in response to death threats, vandalism, and rowdy demonstrations at recent in-person meetings.

The board took their vote during a virtual closed-session meeting Monday night. They’re hoping the virtual space can offer safe harbor from what they call threatening crowds.

Do kids choose books based on what their school libraries have on hand?  That seems unlikely in 2021.  Kids can probably pirate an ebook faster than you can say “book burning” these days, and if they’re getting recommendations on what to read it’s not from the school librarian.

Not saying any of these bans are ok, just that it seems like trying to stop word from spreading by unplugging the fax machines.

As somebody who was a child within the last 30 years, I would choose books from my elementary school library.  As the pretentious little thing I was, I selected my book based on how big it was.  I couldn't let that smart girl beat me!

My daughter is eight.  She gets some books from her school library, but mostly she also borrows ebooks, and audio books, from the county library on the Libby App.  She also gets me to buy her graphic novels from Barnes and noble.
