Taylor Heinicke announces he wants to stay in Washington after breakout performance vs. Buccaneers

Heinicke may have made a little bit of money for himself on Saturday night

Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke recorded his best performance as a pro during Washington's 31-23 postseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night, and it's one he's hoping will keep him in rotation in Washington moving forward. When it was announced that quarterback Alex Smith would not suit up due to his calf injury, Heinicke stepped up and almost pulled off what would have been an upset for the books in just his second-ever start.

Against the Buccaneers on Saturday night, Heinicke completed 26 of 44 passes for 306 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also led Washington in rushing with 46 yards and a touchdown on six carries. The former undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion has had stints with a couple of different NFL teams, but Ron Rivera -- who gave him his first career start with the Carolina Panthers -- has always kept him close. After Saturday night's loss, which also marked the conclusion of his one-year deal, Heinicke told reporters that he is comfortable with Rivera and made it clear that he hopes his future is in Washington.

"I love Ron," Heinicke told reporters, via JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington. "I want to be back in Washington."

Heinicke may feel like he's still competing for a roster spot, but it's possible that he played himself into a little bit of money or at least a guaranteed spot on an NFL roster on Super Wild-Card Weekend. He was on the losing side of things against the Buccaneers, but he arguably was the player of the game. Late in the third quarter, he led a seven-play, 61-yard drive which was capped with an incredible eight-yard scramble for a touchdown.

Heinicke's heroics at that point had cut the deficit to just two points. After Tampa Bay converted a field goal on the ensuing possession, Heinicke and Washington's offense took the field with a chance to take the lead. Instead, the backup signal-caller injured his left shoulder and was escorted to the locker room as Washington punted the ball away. He returned just minutes later, however, and led an 11-play, 75-yard drive which resulted in a touchdown -- a beautiful 11-yard dime to Steven Sims that cut the lead to six points before Washington eventually lost.

Heinicke may have some options to choose from this offseason, but with how comfortable he apparently is with Rivera, Washington may have found its true No. 2 quarterback.

The future is bright indeed.

Heinicke even caused us to hit the .500 mark for the first time in a very long time - since Week 2 of 2020.

Here we are sittin pretty at 0-0.

Seriously, he's got it all, practically.

An NFL brain.

An NFL arm

A couple NFL legs.

He is a true dual threat - a legit passer, and a ridiculously great runner.

Washington having a QB group that consists of Alex Smith, Taylor Heinicke, and Kyle Allen going into next season is not a bad thing.

They may draft a QB or bring one in on free agency if the situation presents itself, but I wouldn't be unhappy with that trio.

Taylor Heinicke is not a math major...  he was completing his BSME (mechanical engineering) at ODU when he got called up.

I did my BSME at ODU too and took that same upper level math course called "Partial Differential Equations" as part of our degree requirements.  Not sayin I'm an NFL quarterback or anything.

That being said, I've followed with great interest as TH balled out at ODU.  He was a founding father to our emerging football program and set the FCS world on fire with 15,000 yards.

He went on to Minnesota as an UDFA and hurt himself trying to help a buddy break into that dude's home.  Then he continued his journeyman path thru Carolina, etc.

Following TH, I'd say that any ODU fan is most concerned with his durability and size.  My friends have pics with TH in Foreman Field and 6'1" is a bit of a stretch.. the way that Iverson is 6'

No doubt in my mind that he'd be a Drew Brees type of player if he were a little taller and a little more damage tolerant.

Either way... I'm super proud of Taylor Heinicke for doing what he did so easily at Old Dominion (against FCS opponents)... he made Tampa Bay's Defense look no different.  I am a proud Monarch and a proud Redskin/WFT fan tonight and excited about the offseason... (when was the last time you were this stoked heading into the offseason?)

Hail

I want him to stay obviously but, come on, a little overdramatic with the headline?  Let's try to portray context a little better.

overdramatic? It doesn’t say “Heinicke is the new franchise QB” lol, it simply says he had a breakout performance.

How is that not true?? He was a backup XFL player who nobody on the national stage knew, who then put up 350 total yards and 2 total TD’s (despite at least 4 drops) in front of the whole country in prime time against the GOAT.

Totally separate from whether he’s any good or not, that is the definition of a “breakout performance” lol.

Turns out he dislocated his AC joint on that diving TD so maybe we tell him not to do that one again. Lol

Sounds like an encounter I had with my doctor

"My elbow hurts really bad when I twist it in this direction. What should I do ?"

Doctor : "Stop moving your elbow in that direction"

Seriously, right?

Dude had 300 yards tonight with two TDs singlehandedly... (not to mention all the drops from his WRs)

When have we ever seen a performance like that in a meaningful game... with the nation's undivided attention?  Mark Rypien?  LOL

Do you not remember 2012 thanksgiving? :)

Well.. yes.  😊

But I was thinking of win-or-die types of games.  and man.. we very nearly beat the 8 point spread tonight and died with the ball in our hands (before Tom took the victory formation)

Yep, it was an amazing effort, for sure. I dont think anyone expected us to actually hang with the Bucs all night long. The skins of old definitely lose tonight’s game 45-3.

I will get overdramatic REAL quick.... HEINZ 57 is the sweetest sauce I've seen in quite a while.  THIS ANIMAL comes out swinging in so many different ways.

Thom Brady tried to Goff/Foles him at the end of the game, and the SHINEY HEINY yells out "HEY, TOM" then basically HORSE-COLLARS him for a quick handshake.  (Thom knew exacccctly what he was doing.)

That's a dude right there.

The ODU post above is my only caution right now because I felt like he may be a little too TURBO for his size/weight... but at the same time, I know he's rocking that #4 for a reason and he really personifies what this sport is all about in my eyes.

I was talking about the "wants to stay in Washington" bit.

Totally fine with all the other stuff.  Him saying he likes Ron and being here is far from an "announcement"

ETA: look, I want to make out with Heinicke just as much as everyone else, maybe more.  I think hes our QB of the future.  I also think this headline is stupid because wtf else is he gonna say other than he wants to come back?  He wants any job he can get.

I used to he a copywriter and it bothers me lol.  Thats all.

I haven't enjoyed watching a Washington QB this much since RG3's one and only great season. What TH has is much more sustainable, however, because he makes good reads and exhibits great pocket presence. We don't have to cater the offense to him.

Give him a contract and a fair shot at a starting job.

I agree, bringing him in to compete is a no brainer at this point.

A lot to like out of Heinicke tonight.  A lot.  Now we find out moving forward if he has what it takes to be the every day guy.

In other words, the off-season starts now.  Clearly he has the ability, but does he have the drive?  To do the homework, put in the extra hours.  Be the first one in and the last one out.   In other words, does he have what Haskins lacked.  The drive and work ethic to be a starting everyday NFL QB?

Nothing serves as a reminder of just how awful the QB play has been on this team, as the reaction from fans to a pretty good QB performance.  The WFT didn’t even win the game, but we’re all thrilled because we looked competant for a change and didn’t walk away from this game embarrassed (which deep down inside many of us expected).

That said, I want to see what the Heinicke can do next season.  I even bothered to learn how to spell his name.

I will pat myself on the back but I thought Drew Brees was the best true OB in the 2001 draft.  I remember thinking we should take him.

I was ecstatic after watching him play tonight....then some of his tweets from over the summer/last year surfaced (JDR-esque) and I'm not totally sure now. God damnit Heinicke

If he can play as well as he did tonight consistently then I could not give less of a **** what his political beliefs are. Cannot believe that's even a story. Who gives a **** he isn't your Senator he's a quarterback.

Wait, who's his agent ?

That could be pretty critical 😛

Same agency as Mahomes.

Looks like fans ren't the only ones to appreciate his performance:

How would you not like a game after a play like that?

Hoping to see you around next year Taylor
