  1. Whatever QB we draft will be a bust. Do people not realize we are cursed to not have a quality QB that WE draft high (we have the record for most consecutive years using top 10 picks on a QB). Of our top 5 guys, only Baugh was higher than a second round pick. Snead did get us Sonny and RG3 did give us probably one of the greatest years a QB in Washington has ever had. Our best include a guy who was originally a 4 (albeit we got him by trading Snead), a guy who George Allen traded for (he was probably expected to be the backup), another guy who was originally a 4 by the Dolphins (we got him via a George Allen trade), a 6th rounder, and another 4th rounder. Meanwhile, of the 12 times we've used our 1 on a QB since Baugh, only Snead did us a solid by getting us Sonny while the rest were pretty much busts.
  2. Big advantage LaPorta had is a HC who was a TE and then a TE coach, an OC who spent several years as a TE coach, a QB who started his rise to the top with an OC whose background was as a TE coach. I could see us going for a TE if we go to Ben Johnson but I also can see him believing he can coach up the TEs we have.
  3. He actually did OK with the Browns given the handicaps (the move, the competition and a bare cupboard). It is more of the fact that a 70+ year old may not have as much energy as he did 15-20 years ago plus he has a model of how to run a team that was successful which may not work as well as it did and might have only worked due to ownership (he was thought to be on the hot-seat according to most experts as late as November 2001), a little luck, innovation of the type yet to be seen a lot and quickly turning the team into winners (many players love winning and will put up with loads of crap if they win) as winners tend to continue to win while losers tend to continue to lose (talent and coaching ability is not only thing different between winners and losers). While a big reason was a QB GOAT, this GOAT did not make outrageous salary demands, played at a high-level for years (most coaches will have a bad year or two because they are developing a guy) and was probably the de-facto OC for several of the seasons.
  4. Jets defense is more comparable to our defense then the Raiders defense. While Allen also can make plays out of bad situations, so can Wilson and I don't see that happening to us two games in a row. Buffalo has put up some decent defensive numbers but they also played two of the worst offenses in the NFL. So far, we also have shown we don't go away and our defense has made at least 6 big plays already compared to last year when we made less than 1 per game. While many of these numbers could be flukes (we are only 2 games in), I don't think they are. The last time we started 3-0 was also the last time we won a playoff game. If we are actually good (something that we haven't seen around these parts for years), we will likely win this game by a Tuddy in Q4. What scares me the most would be if we needed a FG to win and get the opportunity at clutch time (well, we do have an all-pro holder which helps).
  5. You really don't have to provide exceptions. There really is no ideal height for a QB though most great ones have been between 6-0 and 6-4 but there are too many exceptions to use that range as a standard.
  6. On top of that, there were no options in 2022 better than Dotson, Robinson and Howell (I think those are the products of our trade with New Orleans) and probably no better options when we actually picked than Dotson (WR was as critical a need as OL). I'd agree that corner was also about as critical a need as OL and no first round worthy OL was available. I think the only argument here might be that we would have been wiser to go with Mauch over Martin. I don't think looking at the draft is a good criticism. Arguments is not going hard to save our relationships with Williams and Scherff along with the inability to find that jaw-dropper in the weeds, especially when you know the cornerstone of the offense you wanted to run from 2020 to 2022 depended as much on elite oline play as anything.
  7. This game shows how tight the NFL margins are. We were just 2 plays away from losing but also just two plays away from nearly blowing Denver out. Denver makes the 2 point and then wins in OT or we get stopped on our final TD (a 3-8 early in that drive was only converted because they held). They win 35-41. We left 6 points on the field (and arguably up to 18) and that might have meant Denver has to go for it on 4th down on that FG drive near the end and a HM is meaningless so they don't try. We win 41-24.
  8. I think technically, it is his second, My greatest thrill was all the screens and swings that actually worked for big yards. I really believe that getting those going in EB's offense, especially when you don't have elite oline play, is key to getting some big downfield plays.
  9. If you're not rich, you are not going to games.
  10. Why did the announcer keep saying Howell went to his check on at least 3 screens (maybe 4)? If you got a bevy of olineman in front of the receiver, that was the intended play not a check.
  11. A big thing for me is breaking 4 swings or screens for big yards. We haven't done that much for years.
  12. Seems that it has been since 2017 that our games have been about who gets to 21 first. This was the first game it seems in such a long time that it was more about who got to 30 first. Also, in the past, our final TD would have just been a FG.
  13. Was that before you kicked the Japanese at Normandy?
  14. When your punter is Tress Way and, for the most part the defense is shutting the other guys down, going for the win like we did is a good strategy.
  15. Don't agree. I think Rivera needs to win at least 1 playoff game with Howell as his guy to have any chance to keep his job. We get to the playoffs (though we lose our first game) or are the first or second team out of them, Rivera will likely be gone and EB probably gets the first bite of the apple. This scenario would mean that most likely the Howell experiment showed enough promise and probably go oline if one is available. If the Howell experiment falls on its ass due to Howell's failure, Harris replaces Rivera and we move up to find another QB. In this case, we do need to move on from Howell, anyway. This third scenario is the only one where I see us moving on from Howell.
  16. Yep, I think the reason guys like Rodgers takes a lot of sacks is because he knows his athleticism can often keep a bad call alive until it becomes a good play. Manning did not have that level of athleticism to turn a bad call into a good play so as soon as he knew the call would not work, he got rid of the ball. I don't think Howell likes to go with the wimpy play if he thinks his athleticism can get him to the good play. I think he might be right but sometimes you just need to trust your defense (especially when it is good) or have awareness that when you don't necessarily need a play that's going to get 15-20 yards, go with the one that gets you positive yards if there is good reason to believe that going for the bigger play will likely result in a TO or an incompletion.
  17. Zach Wilson looks younger than the starting QB on my local HS team!
  18. In his 7 tries against us, its more about us not being that good. In fact, in games against us where you could call him Steve Young 2.0, he is 1-1-1 and our biggest beat down at the hands of a Jones-led Giants was a day he was well below par for an NFL QB.
  19. Don't understand why anybody prefers Crowder on punt returns. Outside of 2016, Crowder's punt return performance has usually been worse than having no punt returner. There is a reason that from 2018 to last year, Crowder was not the primary punt return guy. I am still upset about our performance but not as upset as I was during the game and right at the end of the game. Our defense gave up only 6 points. The three turnovers by our offense made up 10+ for the Cards and -3 at a MINIMUM on us. Despite an ugly performance by the offense without the TOs, we would have won the game 23-6 minimum and 31-6 at the high end. So that's something because we are more likely to be able to clean that up than our other ugly issues (though Sam may learn to not be such a sack magnet). Was pretty mad that the defense was not creating turnovers until the last quarter as failure to create turnovers was the one sore spot I had with the defense last year. Tress Way may need to find a new cornhole partner. Brian Mitchell said it took him a while to even start consistently catching punts so I'm hoping that Allen gets enough practice at that and can prove he can at least play a Sunday 5 spot WR so that by mid-season we don't need Crowder or Milne. I hate on Crowder as a return guy and don't think he holds Dax's jock strap in this regard but he offers much more than Milne as a 4 or 5 spot Sunday WR. I guess there is some possibility is that the 2016 version of Crowder comes back as I also suspect that much of our punt return problem is not fully on the punt returner.
  20. However, analytics indicates that a guy who doesn't make the big mistakes in the punt return game (muffs and fumbles) is better than a guy who can make some big returns but fumbles all the time. Crowder fumbles 1 out of 10 or so opportunities while Dax has never fumbled and rarely even makes a return error. On top of that, with the exception of 2016, Crowder really has just only been just slightly better than Dax on the actual returns. At the GAMEDAY 4/5 spot, Dax has been solid though not spectacular and GAMEDAY 4 looks to be Brown's now if he avoids injury.
  21. When we were playing will he/won't he with Chase last year, I actually became concerned about his future. Put it badly but I was convinced that was either ready or he'd never be. I think his surgery/rehab went bad (where he is now very physically fragile), he was psychologically scared (has Chase ever suffered a severe injury like that before?) where minor pain that his old self would play through worry him into thinking it might be a career ender (he is still basically a kid) or maybe both. Remember, Smith's injury prematurely ended his career (he played with Smith and his injury was roughly on the same part of the field). Arrington, our previous #2 overall pick, had a nickname of Wolverine because he always seemed to play his best when playing in pain and playing through pain was probably part of what cut his career short.
  22. Its seems we usually can deal with Dallas in most big games even when both teams must win but we always seem to have problems against the Giants in games when even just our team needs a win.
