Maybe the Vikes should have held on to him.. however his value as an extensible QB with transferable skills was revealed when he went to Denver. Denver saw the first hand evidence and shipped him out one year later. He should be greatfull to retire with a career like JC or Fritzpatrick. I dunno. If that was the case, would Kirk's team have done so much worse last year?
Darrell Green Fan
As for Haskins i was happy with the pick but concerns remain. I watched 3 OSU games, Penn State, Michigan and the Rose Bowl against Washington. He had a great game against Michigan statistically and the announcers were raving about him. But his stats were incredibly deceiving. The vast majority of his yards came on short crossing patterns with a ton of YAC. On his 2 long TDs one the guy was wide open, on the other the receiver was again open and made a great adjustment on the ball. He was also sailing short passes 10 feet over receivers. I just didn't see him fitting anything into tight windows on a 14 yard in, the types of throws that an NFL QB needs to make. Not saying he can't but he hasn't done that, at least in the games I have seen.
Llevron
He has the arm and anticipation to make tight throws as long as his feet are set. Per like every scouting report and his current coaches
SWFLSkins
The Redskins want to improve Haskins' footwork. They want him to get comfortable dropping back from under center, something he didn't do with the Buckeyes. They want him to get used to resetting his feet under pressure. "With the quarterback, it starts with the basics," Gruden said. "He's a guy that didn't call a lot of plays in the huddle. So we're talking about breaking the huddle and calling plays in the huddle, and the snap count, getting guys lined up, going through his progressions, his footwork -- not only in the passing game but in the running game. There's a lot thrown at him. It's a long process, but he's a bright guy. I was impressed."
Califan007 The Constipated
Not sure if this was posted, I just saw it today...since Haskins and Jones will be linked for at least their rookie seasons I found this video to be...um...uh...lol...especially after seeing the videos of Haskins in this thread. SWFLSkins
Thank you. Without you, I wouldn’t have been a Buckeye. I wouldn’t be a Washington Redskin. I wouldn’t be the man I am today. Without you guiding me, teaching me, holding me accountable, loving me, and supporting me, I don’t know where I would be. I’m a mama’s boy, through and through. You always say that, as a parent, you know you’re doing a good job when your kids do better than you. Thank you for setting that bar so high. Happy Mother’s Day. I've read the bit about short passes so many times and while I think there may be merit to it, I think of all the success Cousins' had with the short game. I remember how many Super Bowls Brady has won with the short game. Sometimes, a QB hitting the open guy on time and in rhythm is a lot more important than those huge seventy yard bombs. I mean realistically aren't the majority of passes thrown in the NFL short passes with only a few deep attempts per game? There are very few teams that air it out and go bombs away like the old Raiders teams. I absolutely do want our QB to hit the route when that bomb springs open, but I also want him able to hit all those short and intermediate routes that the West Coast Offense thrives on. Finally, given a good o line with a bad injury history and a question mark at left guard. Maybe having a QB who excels at reading defenses, recognizing pressure, and taking advantage of it via the short game is what we need. I mean given how big, fast, and brutal DEs and linebackers are these days... you don't have that many chances to let a long route develop.

In general I am not fond of these types of comparisons. This is one is no different. They are different times and typically completely different circumstances. Also, there are plenty of examples of both approaches (sitting or starting) working and failing. Ultimately it comes down to the player and the team. For me it's a case by case decision. I happen to agree Haskins should probably sit a year. Having said that, it will not be the end of the world if he starts right away either, especially if he clearly beats Colt and Case out in TC. He seems to be a smart kid that works hard. I loved his film session on the Big Ten network. @Llevron posted it first but I think it's worth posting here again in case people have not seen it. Gives some good insight to his understanding of pro-level concepts. D'oh!...I knew Roethlisberger started 13 games his rookie season and my memory was of Maddox sucking at the beginning of the season and his injury being fortunate for the Steelers. And yeah, like I said I know you weren't talking about my point, I just wanted to make it again anyway lol...

Califan007 The Constipated
I have read so many different analysis on Haskins that contradict each other--for example, some have said his accuracy is excellent on short and medium range passes while others have said he's often off-target on short and medium passes--that putting all of it aside and just seeing what happens has become incredibly easy for me. "Yes, but Haskins..."--sure, whatever. "But he doesn't..."--cool. "From what I've seen, he has problems doing..."--good to know. "At the rookie minicamp, some of his throws were..."--great, thanks. "He better not be starting or..."--that's one opinion, yep. "He better be starting or..."--that's another opinion, definitely. Being a fan, I'll enjoy the positives and hope the negatives are either exaggerated or are being worked on and improved.

Stadium-Armory
Jay Gruden impressed with Dwayne Haskins early at rookie minicamp Dwayne Haskins made his debut with the Washington Redskins this weekend, competing at the first two days of the team’s rookie minicamp on Friday and Saturday. Though it’s still early, coach Jay Gruden said he was extremely pleased with the former Ohio State standout. "We're at the very bare minimum right now, but very impressed by his skillset for sure. Can really spin it," Gruden said Saturday, via the NFL Network. "He's just a big, solid, fundamentally sound guy. He's just a big presence in there and the ball just jumps off his hand. He also has the ability to speed it up and he has great touch, as well, for some of the short balls. He's displayed that he can make, in this short period of time, all the throws. ... He's kind of displayed a little bit everything these two days." Click here for the full article.

As I said he didn't really demonstrate the ability to fit the ball into a tight space on a 10 yard route, the kind of completion necessary on 3rd and 9. You can't survive only on short passes and a few deep shots, those 10-15 yarders need to be completed and I saw no evidence that he can (or can't for that matter) make those throws because he rarely attempted them. volsmet
Haskins is one of the best passer on 5-15 yard, outside the numbers throws, that I’ve watched in several years. More speed, more pressure, in the more congested part of the field will be the test — but the ability to routinely put the outside throws in will open up more of the field for him than would be available to Colt, Alex or Case. Malapropismic Depository
I asked this question earlier in the thread. But it was mis-interpreted as questioning the potential of Haskins, or comparing the 2 QB's. But I'm just curious what might end up happening to Alex next year, if he wants to play, and can play ? Arguing Alex vs Dwayne is not my question. Because the logistics of what we do with him, still has to be eventually answered. Do we try to get a late draft pick in a trade for Alex, or could we ? Do we try to get a mid-late draft pick in a trade for him, or could we ? If Alex can play and Haskins hasn't won the job then you make them compete. No one is going to trade for Alex and it would be silly to give up on a talented prospect a year into his development if you mean trading Haskins. Haskins will hit a 3rd & 9 out 49 times out of 100 if protected, that’s a throw he’s more advanced with than any QB from the last few classes.
