"From what I could see, the stained glass had not been damaged, the three beautiful roses that date back to the 12th and 13th century were still there," explains on BFM Paris André Finot, spokesman of the cathedral, who was able to enter the nave during the night.

The fear concerning these windows is now the fragility of the building. Other stained glass windows have also been damaged, but these are newer.
Another small relief is that the organ of the cathedral was spared by the flames.

A couple of french businessmen already pledged for +€300 mil, that's the total of money that our stupid governments have been granted to take care of ALL our historical  monuments !

Interesting fact about this cathedral - it took nearly 200 years to build.  Broke ground in 1165, finished in 1345.

I'm not sure any modern civilization would have patience to start and finish a project of that magnitude.

The closest example in modern history is probably Sagrada Familia which was amazingly started in the late 1800's. It is scheduled to be completed by 2026.

Construction on Antoni Gaudi's masterpiece Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, began nearly 150 years ago, and was never completed. However, according to The Verge, the iconic church will be finished by architect Jordi Fauli and his team in 2026. Construction on the cathedral started in 1882.

This is one of the more amazing stories of why this wasn't worse.

Also, re: Trump.  I really bite my tongue when I'm tempted to talk about him.  But reading his tweets reminds me of the dude you meet at a dinner party who once read an article generally related to your career field, but then spends the entire dinner lecturing you about what he knows.

Although I do agree with that order and the sentiment of the statement the building itself is also an historical work of art.

Technically you can repaint the mona lisa if you wanted to but it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't done by davinci.

But yes the priority has to be the stuff that absolutely cannot be replaced then work on the things that have been getting re-done for centuries anyway.

How in the holy **** does that ****bag manage to turn a church fire into a rallying call for racists?!

And Right-wingers think people like that deserve open access to our schools and forums.

As of 5 PM yesterday my trumpista Mother In Law was already saying it was set ablaze by muslims. Good stuff.

I think the firefighters did a great job to save so much of the historical material, including a decent part of the building itself.  That the rose windows survived is a miracle.

Re Trump:  If your reaction to the partial destruction of one of history's greatest architectural achievements, and the figurative and literal center of one of the world's great cities, is to muse about flying water tankers, your brain does not work correctly.

Finally, i'd like to note the work of Andrew Tallon, a pioneering architectural historian and father of four, who died on November 16, 2018 from brain cancer at the age of 49.  Prof Tallon painstakingly laser scanned every inch of Notre Dame so that they have an incredibly detailed record of the structure, expressed as over a billion data points.  So the structure will be rebuilt in excruciating detail and, rather than people viewing it as partially a replica of the original structure, hopefully it will be viewed as a cohesive whole, built and rebuilt over the centuries, by the people of France.

Tallon emphasizes that the importance of laser scanning lies well beyond its ability to simply measure.  “The consequences of laser scanning,” he says, “are equally far-reaching in terms of representation. A three-dimensional laser-generated model allows one
not only to peer into the building but also to displace it, measure it and, most importantly, immerse oneself in its spatial and structural matrix. Both the structural skeleton and the evidence of its malfunction, the deformation produced by the push and pull of its constituent elements, are made immediately apparent to expert and lay audiences alike – a picture, in this case, well worth a thousand words.”

suddenly... literally in the last hour or so... EVERY thread in facebook about this fire is being bombarded with (slightly veiled) ... ****..  here are three of the last four posts on a thread there:

Our President said tonight that he wants it to be rebuild within 5 years.

Seems a bit optimistic to me.

And donations are up to 1 billion so far.

It's cool seeing rich men that hates each other going into a bidding war at who will give the most!

People are pretty dumb if they believe people like beck and whoever that other guy is, You can clearly see all the scaffolding around the church... major renovation was going on. Its safe to say the fire was related to that construction. I’m thinking welding of steel support structures inside the spire...

Besides, Islamic terrorists blow themselves up or otherwise kill themself in the act — passive aggressive attacks aren’t really their MO...

I am a bit surprised ISIS hasn’t tried to take responsibility for it yet, though.

I don't know why, but your comment reminded me of this Russell Peters standup bit: https://youtu.be/uTXemscTJWM?t=208 (linked only, because of NSFW language)

The world is at the bedside of Notre Dame, thanks a lot to all those people.

Eric Fischer, who heads a foundation restoring the 1,000-year-old Strasbourg Cathedral that recently underwent a three-year facelift, said he thought rebuilding Notre Dame would probably take several decades.

Some have expressed hope that detailed 3D maps of Notre Dame created in recent years by academics such the late US art historian Andrew Tallon, who used laser scanners to create a model of the building accurate to within 5mm, could help – as could similar near-perfect computer models generated for video games such as Assassin’s Creed Unity, which is set in Paris.

US citizens Henry and Marie-Josée Kravis contribute €10 mil. Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted on Tuesday that the company would be "donating to the rebuilding efforts to help restore Notre Dame's precious heritage for future generations" but did not specify an amount.

The German and Italian governments have also offered to help in the reconstruction, while Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to send “the best Russian specialists with rich experience in the restoration of national heritage monuments.”

Shared grief and memories make Notre Dame a unifier online

To be fair, you can do things differently when most of the populace doesn't have a say in the process.

I would argue that most of the circumstances that lead to a 200-year-long public works project lean negative.

An assumed limitation of sending interstellar probes is that it would have to reach its destination within a human lifetime, 50-60 years.    Which is what project Breakthrough Starshot is about.  Because supposedly no one wants to invest in a project if they aren't going to be around to see the results.    But as Notre Dame cathedral and other projects showed, clearly that is not some fundamental human limitation, but a limitation of our current civilization.
