The Bruce Allen/GM Thread

Bruce needs to be shown the door.  We have football problems and we need football people to solve them, not politicians.

The whole thing about we are a traditional franchise with regards to the color rush, well, the tradition has been 25 years of suck.  This team is living in the 80's and Joe Gibbs, Bobby Beathard and The Hogs are not walking through that door.

KC is as good as gone and we are staring down the barrel of a 4-12 season next year and a coaching change.

(For the record, I was against the color rush too, but the whole traditional franchise argument echoes back to a time when we were relevant and we have not been since 1992)

To be fair, Shanahan was the General Manager from 2010-2013 and Scott was from 2015-2017. What occurred in those years is hard to blame or credit Bruce for any of it. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to blame Bruce for Scott's drinking problem or Snyder allowing Shanahan control of everything. Bruce has spend most of his time here more as a public spokesman/money manager role than an actual General Manager.

Just going by the the official NFL Record. Bruce held the title  GM under Shanny.  My point is, Mr. Allen is not good as his job!

This is where the problem lies... the focus right now within the building isn't the football, it's the politics.  It's the brand new training camp facility, the new stadium deal, the color of the color rush uniforms.  I heard as much about what color our uniforms were going to be this past week, as I did how we were going to win the game.  I constantly find myself saying "I hate the Red on Yellow" when it really doesn't mean squat.

I heard a reporter mention they don't see Bruce going anywhere because he's a BIG part of the new stadium deal.  That he's the 'politician' style person who can not only get that thing done, but expedite the process and possibly save Dan a bunch of coin.  That itself is enough for Dan to hold on to Bruce, maybe longer than he deserves to be here.

Which sort of boggles my mind. How does Bruce Allen have this reputation as  being some sort of smart, savvy anything? He comes off as a complete and utter buffoon to me every time I hear him speak and see the kinds of things he does. The "Kurt" thing, the idiotic "grandmother" excuse for SM's absence at the combine, the total bungling of the Cousins deal ... what the **** has this douche nozzle ever done WELL that makes him some sort of "big time player" in a stadium deal?? Again, it just boggles my mind. Same can be said for the PR guy Tony Wylie. How do these people have and hold these high level jobs? They seem like utter imbeciles in pretty much every capacity who consistently do things that would even make Forrest Gump scratch his head in bewilderment.

Feeling so hopeless right now as a fan. There just seems like nothing at all to cling to for any foreseeable positive change. The rats are dug in and they don't seem to be vacating the shambles of this once-great franchise any time soon.

Honestly, some sort of scandal seems like about the only thing that could get these clowns away from our team. I think we should all chip in and instead of putting up a "Fire Bruce and Dan" billboard hire a private investigator to start digging.

It's almost like the Skins front office is modeling itself after the dysfunctional Bidwell front office of the St. Louis Cardinals NFL franchise.  I'm seeing the same "over-economizing" approaches, but then followed by very odd decisions that results in over-spending.  The NFL St. Louis Cardinals was generally quite an inept franchise even when they landed great QB talent like Neil Lomax.  And, as you know, the ultimate shafting of the St. Louis fan base occurred when Bidwell moved the team out to Phoenix.

I always wonder if Snyder might consider doing something like that as well.  I doubt it -- because Washington has traditionally been a great market for football -- but I can't help but note how Snyder/Allen are beginning to sour that relationship a bit too.  Hopefully if/when they get their new stadium, things will turn around.  ?

I think I remember reading  that when Mark May went to go play there he had to pay for everything. Things that the team would normally supply... cleats, sweatbands, tape and so on...

Hmmm....could Bruce Allen and Synder be the next “big names” brought up in a sexual harassment scandal ???  The PI’s should start with office admin assistants....

I've heard rumors and things over the years from people who've worked out there. Sadly, nothing concrete. But enough to think there would probably be something there if someone was determined enough to find it. I'm going to sacrifice a goat today inside a pentagram and see if that does anything for this situation. Stay tuned ...

Good post. If that is the case keep him on board for that exactly. Stadiums, policies and so on.

President of the organization only on th financial side and politics side. That is an important role for any organization.

However when it comes to football decisions, hire some who runs football ops and a gym under him that he chooses and has oversight regarding player evaluation, draft etc.

It is time to get professional.

Sorry I am aware that he has the title of president, and he can keep it, just have a football guy handle football decisions.

Absolutely.. You wonder if Dan can't bring himself to pay someone to do both jobs, despite the fact that Bruce has not given us a reason that he can...  I agree with you, it's time to get professional.  We've been a joke for years when it comes to development and if we have any aspirations for sustained success as a team AND a franchise, it's going to have to start with the players.  Great talent can make up for poor management... great management can only do so much for deficient talent.

So that was exactly what was going on, the bolded.

The problem was that despite all the outward claims that the GM had total control, he didn't.

It fell apart when the football guy said: "Hey this QB here needs to be on a long term contract, got to get it done ... a million positive reasons why."

But the guy on the financial side didn't want to pay the tab.

That's the fundamental issue. And that would still be the fundamental issue if your plan was implemented.

As long as Bruce is the President and he's vested the power to control the financial side, that means controlling all the money coming in and going out. That most certainly means having a say, and the final decision upon, handing out the largest contract that the team will be financially on the hook for.

Bruce, by having control of the money, controls the roster (in a round-about way). He can decide to pay or not to pay ... anyone. And that reaches beyond and arches above any "football decisions."

You see?

The football guy can be undermined at any time.

Bruce isn't just in charge of how much money the team spends on bunting and streamers.

Never really thought of it like that.

Your right.

I guess I would want Bruce, in his role to be that guy to handle the finances and be able to have input, but no authority for football decisions, out side of sitting in a meeting evaluating the expense of a certain player relative to their budget.

I guess if if you have Bruce have the power that he has he could make life difficult for any GM.

To to your point, which is a good one, how do you fix this problem?

Furthermore can can it be fixed based on Snyder’s attitude if you will.

Example, if he fired Bruce, would someone else that he brought in essentially be another Bruce, if you know what I mean.

In in other words if I read between the lines, we ac fans have should not be holding our collective breath.

Let me say this...the eagles front office for almost all I can remember had goof structure. Very savvy traded and fleeced s lot of teams. This past year they signed 2 people timmy jernigan and alshon jeffery to 1 year deals and by the end of week 12 they have been resigned to extensions. Yet we have a Zach Brown who has shown a lot of great things at LB thst we haven't seen since fletch and......we haven't even bothered.

Mentioned this in the "Who do we sign" thread... I'm really concerned that we are yet to sign anyone since CT in the preseason... No extensions at all.

To be fair, we don't know if we tried or not.  Could be we did try and it was just a low-ball offer his agent laughed at.

Well, one way is not particularly a way Snyder/FO operates, and that is WHEN someone with talent becomes available, POUNCE ON HIM!

Remember awhile back, when the FO was looking for a DC, and they dragged their feet and finger-****ed themselves until that person was signed by another team, then shrugged their shoulders and made excuses. I remember Wade Phillips was one of them, can't remember the other.

But this would have to be a Snyder move, being Bruce is right under him, so until there is a literal uproar in the locker room and front office, demanding something be done, Bruce will sabotage any efforts to have him removed.

That's why I was thinking of hiring an escort or a 'bait woman' to entrap him some way. The man is like a case of the crabs; it takes a lot of effort to get rid of them; at least that's what I've heard...

If Snyder decides to fire Gruden then to be fair he has to fire Allen too.

Snyder has never cleaned house in the time he’s been here. It’s always piecemeal. Quite frankly, Bruce should’ve been shown the door when they fired Shanahan. He as the GM, figurehead or not, was just as responsible for the salary cap debacle and us getting docked 36 mil. He’s very responsible for the tremendous dysfunction of the franchise today. They botched RGIII, they botched the uncapped year, Allen botched the McCloughan situation, and he’s on the verge of botching the Cousins situation.

Allen has 99.9% ****** the Cousin's situation. If Allen had anything about him he would walk.

Some snippets from older articles, but relevant:

WP: A Redskins-Scot McCloughan separation seems to be a question of when, not if

Quote

The handling of Cousins and his contract also represented an area of disagreement. McCloughan had told people around the league that if he had full control, the Redskins would have signed the quarterback to a multiyear contract in 2016, avoiding the use of two straight franchise tags with long-term resolution. That angered Allen, who in turn started blaming his general manager in league circles for all of the negative media leaks about Cousins. Allen publicly has taken an “all in” approach on the quarterback. But sources say he is still hesitant to give the quarterback a lucrative multiyear deal.

SI: An Examination of What Went Wrong in Washington

Quote

The then-GM met for five hours one night that summer to try to convince owner Dan Snyder and president Bruce Allen that the time had come, and the team needed to move from Robert Griffin III to Kirk Cousins. Soon thereafter, with Cousins installed as starter, and believing he was in for a big year, McCloughan made a second appeal to the team’s top brass.

Let’s extend Cousins now, he told them, so we’re not stuck holding the bag later.

In the end, the quarterback’s lingering contract situation was one noticeable trigger in the explosion of the relationship between McCloughan and Allen, the team’s top two decision-makers.

There's a Post article where McCloughan admits that they (collectively) messed up with the Cousins contract situation, but it does seem like he wanted to extend him early. This is why a competent GM needs to have final say over personnel.
