Unfortunately this was the only guy we went after as a NT. Maybe there is some hope for him. I did look at one game tape (only one though, at TTech) and I was pretty underwhelmed. I hope Tomsula can do something with one of the guys on our roster, but I look at what we have, and the only one that has any real talent is Phil Taylor. Francis and Mbu I don't have anything faith in. I hoped because this guys was once a 5 star recruit and started at Michigan he might be a diamond in the rough. I suppose I should look at more game tape, but the Negatives really stood out when I watched him. He got moved very easily, no penetration and didn't have much of a motor. If any of you other better connected draftniks have more tape I'd like to take a look see.

I'm going to go back to Malik McDowell again. Even though he really should not have been playing NT, he was the best NT I saw. And I watched a lot of tape of Michigan St. Even when I was say, watching another player ( Montae Nicholson) McDowell just blew up the tape. He flashed everywhere. The amount of times he distroyed double teams, only to have the rest of the DL get moved out? Yeah, I might get frustrated after a while.

Yeah, I know I'm harping on this. But if he's not not a real people person and doesn't like to be buddy buddy with everyone, I'm ok with that. I'm not that guy either. And he's not some douche like Richardson everyone wants us to pick up for a 1 year 8 million dollar rental. I would have been all over him. But I love the Allen Pick, and I really liked the Anderson pick, and keeping him as a OLB and not moving him inside. So, I'm not unsatisfied with how we did overall. In fact, outside of the Montae Nicholson pick, I was quite happy. maybe too many DB's for my taste, but I thought all guys were good value. The Georgia St kid, he might be a steal. But that is for a different post.

Pipkins, I hope you come in and are ready to apply yourself and be taught by maybe the best in the business. You happen to play a position that is a real weakness, and you have a better chance of not just making the squad, but actually seeing some real playing time if you work, and are coachable. We need one of you big boys to step and and anchor the middle for us. We have a offense that can light up the score board, all you have to do is be average and not loose games for us.

Remember what Fred Smoot said, You win with fat boys. He was a CB. I was a WR. Us skinny fast guys know where it's at. :) Go be that fat boy we skinny guys need to win!

Bump, OP updated to reflect WR Verlan Hunter being officially signed a few days back.

He was one of the names that had been previously reported as signed, but then when the team announced the 8 official signings he wasn't on there. Looks like he is for sure though, according to multiple reports on twitter. So that makes 9 total officially. See OP.

So now only these names that were previously reported are unknown at this time if officially signed:

I thought we were at 90. Did someone get cut, or was I just mistaken?

Not sure. But it's all over twitter. Sometimes they're signed as tryout players for the rookie minicamps and I think that might be different than the 90 limit. Hunter may fall into that category.

A blurb about Fish from Walterfootball.com

http://walterfootball.com/wu2017fsmithson.php

Why undrafted?

Quote
Every year in the NFL Draft, there are some excellent college players who go undrafted even though they had great collegiate careers. One of those players this year was Kansas safety Fish Smithson. Over the past two seasons, he recorded 200 tackles with six interceptions and three forced fumbles. Smithson showed excellent instincts while playing for some bad teams. Even though Smithson played really well the past two seasons, he went undrafted.

Sources say that Smithson was a good player who impressed them with instincts that really stood out on two years of good tape. However, the reasons that Smithson (5-10, 200) wasn't selected were size and speed concerns. Sources believe Smithson is a good player, but teams weren't convinced his skill set would translate to the NFL.

After going undrafted, Smithson signed with the Redskins, which was a good choice for him. They are open to having undrafted players beat out draft picks with better play - see Robert Kelley over Matt Jones for example. Washington also needs some long-term answers at safety. The organization signed veteran D.J. Swearinger to a 1-year deal, so he will be part of the team in 2017, but beyond that Washington didn't commit to Swearinger. Su'a Cravens will start next to Swearinger, but Cravens could move to linebacker as well depending on how Su'a Cravens is utilized in the Redskins' new defense. Smithson is going to a good situation as he could compete to be a backup safety and special teams player with 2017 fourth-rounder Montae Nicholson. It wouldn't surprise me if Smithson uses his instincts to overcome his size and speed limitations to make the final roster as a backup. From there, I think he could end up being a massive steal as an undrafted free agent for the Redskins.

I think so. He's not listed on the official team roster (usually pretty up to date) or any transactions. Hunter appears to have just gotten an invite, but no official contract

the list of invited guys includes a long snapper named Paul Kelly.  I think if he does at all well he'll end up in camp.  Long snapper's a vital position but at the same time it's such a specialist you don't want to spend to much on it, so younger equals cheaper

Skins need a QB for PS.  Here is a blurb on one of  the guys invited to try out:

" MIKE FAFAUL - QB - 6-2 205 - SRr - UCLA - in what might be his last game action in filling in for the injured Josh Rosen, Fafaul put on quite a show in the 52- 45 loss to Utah by completing 40 of 70 passes for a 57.1% with 5TDs and 4 Interceptions, but he was forced to throw and Utah knew it as UCLA couldn't get its run game going.  And while he has had such limited playing time at UCLA so as to not generate much interest from NFL teams, he displayed enough to give the Canadian Football League a try."

he could be our Tom Brady.  Though I almost think Sudfeld could be our PS QB.  He was only a sixth round pick, still has eligibilty and now there's a whole nother draft class of QBs for other teams to go scrounging through

Pretty much this. The team will only carry 3 QBs in some fashion. There won't be a practice squad QB if 3 make the 53. I'm still not convinced Sudfeld actually belongs there, but he has this whole offseason to make strides and an impact in training camp. And if he's cut, he's going to the practice squad unless claimed. If the Skins were serious about carrying someone else, they would have either drafted them or at least signed them as an UDFA. The UDFA invite list is starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel

There will never be another "Tom Brady" unfortunately ... but it is extremely fun to try and finds "nuggets" that fall through the crack ... guys like Kelley and Harris for example.  This year it is Pascal.

As for Sudfeld ... I think the Skins really like him ... and so do I ... great potential* ... this pre-season will show us!

Can't wait.

Its been reported that Skins thought so highly of Suds last year ... they purposely kept him on roster to protect him from being plucked off PS.

I am aware of that. Although that doesn't mean he's any good. He could easily be the next Colt Brennan (without the pre-season success) than the next Tom Brady. Or even the next Colt McCoy.

Based on the Mike Jones tweet of the rookie camp roster, all 5 guys mentioned above are in camp on a tryout basis for now

Yup ... That's why this next pre-season is so enticing!

I could have sworn we signed DJ to a 3-year deal?

This kid seems like the inverse of Montae Nicholson, our 4th round pick... Not sparqy, all instincts. Interesting that WalterFootball ranked Montae #10 and Fish #12 among safeties in this draft.

Ok some new signings from among the tryout players:

CB Tevin Homer

TE Manasseh Garner

I believe that means other than the previous 8 players that were mentioned as officially signed, these 2 are added to it. The rest were just tryout players so I don't believe they're considered signed on the roster.

That makes 10 total UDFAs. Will update the OP to reflect.

Manasseh Garner is not a UDFA. Well, he was, but from 2015. Right now he's just a guy bouncing around the league

Yeah, in the OP I wrote it as tryout/undrafted college players to account for that.

But it's nitpicking so I didn't separate him completely from the group since he was signed after tryouts. You'll just have to suffer with him being included, I know it's hard. :P
