We have no choice at this point, remove zero tolerance, and kick the can. Unfortunate downside is it likely removes any motivation to truly fix things.

There is also the option of changing the law to allow both families staying together and detaining them.

The Dems don't like the detaining part usually

It really may be a no win situation for the Democrats.

They can win they just have to actually work together (Rs and Ds) against Trump.

So either they'll decide this is more important than their typical partisan bull****, they'll give trump what he wants to make it stop, or they'll do nothing.

What was happening before April?

Children were detained when parents had criminal histories, or if they came unaccompanied.

Not sure what happened to the families who's only crime was crossing the border.

That's what I see often.  Things that SHOULDNT be done.  I want to know if anyone has a proposal of what SHOULD be done.

Hire more immigration judges so they can hear asylum cases and we can start clearing the backlog that is forming at the moment. It seems to have bipartisan support except from Trump.

By the way, prosecuting asylum seekers is likely a law AND treaty violation. Can we prosecute Miller and Sessions yet?

Seeking asylum is a legal right, protected under U.S. law. Moreover, a provision of the Refugee Convention, which the United States adopted when it ratified the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, prohibits states from penalizing asylum seekers for their manner of entry or presence in the country where they're seeking asylum.

As of now, Feinstein's legislation has ZERO GOP support.

The thing is, if we look at crime statistics, if we look at migration numbers, and all other metrics... this was an artificial issue, a trumped up issue (pun intended). The immigration problem was not a problem and was manageable. What Trump and his Alt Right decided was that it was an issue where they could get a lot of mileage because people like scapegoats and people like to have someone to hate. So, they ginned up their outrage, lied about murders, rapes, and other atrocities all the while ignoring the reality of the situation.

This was a heinous, nazi-style solution in search of a problem.

Ok.  But in the interim?

This was what NPR said Cruz's bill was.

I'm sure people can point back to their outrage over the past decade when kids were detained like this right?

The difference is that Trump is now arresting parents.  That's a big issue and one we should be debating.  Instead were 24/7 wailing about how kids are in cages and other nonsense.  Why?  Because it plays better in the TDS echo chamber.

Yes, cause being upset about kids being in cages is nonsense. You and TWA, you guys keep letting your true colors shine for all to see. It's informative.

Again, kids were "in cages" before.  And the left was effing silent.

Released with a court date after a short detention.

They are not prosecuting asylum seekers, they are detaining illegal enterers until a asylum hearing is held if they claim asylum.

Released inside the US?  Or back into Mexico?

Kids have been in cages on the border for a very long time

And the GOP bill appears to have no support either.

Again - they don't want to do what the other side wants. So they're going to play this game until they decided protecting the children is more important than their game.

Don’t forcibly separate families.

I get that and agree in theory.  Now what is the SOLUTION?  If we dont arrest the parents, they arent separated.  Do they get forced back across the border?  Do we build family cells?  What about the majority of the kids who are detained who are so because they came without parents?

Well, we had a White House back in the day that requested $1.8 billion from Congress to deal with the care of unaccompanied children coming across the border. The difference is we didn't have a government intentionally separating little ones from their parents and we didn't have a government that referred to them as infesting the country. If you can't see the difference in the actions of the government and the situations, that speaks to your character.

I see the difference clearly.  But Im not the one blinded by hatred for absolutely anything the political opposition does.

What's important here is that, while we can all agree Trump sucks, we must not forget that our supposed real politicians have kicked this can for so long that we're actually here.

They've failed to do anything about an obvious immigration problem for almost 40 years now. And based on what they're saying/doing right now, they're trying to continue that way.

We cannot let them skate on criticism for that.

I don’t think Cruz has put anything out yet but it will be interesting to see since he’s one of the more cynical assholes in Congress.

NPR said he had something this morning at 6 AM when I was listening.

1 minute ago, Kilmer17 said:

That's a serious problem.  What stops EVERY SINGLE immigrant from claiming asylum?

A process where a judge reviews the case.

Which is why we have this problem. There are not enough judges.

Which is why some people are calling for hiring of more judges to handle the backlog.

This all hinges around too many people, not enough resources, and a group of politicians who have neglected it and now want to feign moral outrage at the situation so that they can get their supporters to come to their side to defend them.
