ksl.com: Cheating website Ashley Madison hacked, personal info posted

As a Catholic I'm always a fan of a good shaming followed by years of guilt.  Good for the soul.  I do however wonder how many names on there are real, I can't imagine dedicated liars would forget to use an alias though I'm sure some did.

The credit card information is real. That's what is at risk here.

Name and addresses based off that.

Based on the way that site promotes itself I've always assumed its a scam to get guys to sign to meet these lonely housewives who don't actually exist.  Every Mother's Day they posted their annual story about "X thousand women" creating new accounts, which just rang up my BS radar for some reason.  Let's be honest, women don't cheat at the same rate as guys and even if a housewife was feeling alone, she could easily stir something up with a single dude at the library/grocery store/home depot/bus station/work/anywhere rather than try to get some on the internet.

I think there are real women there, but I think it's largely become a market for escorts and strippers.

And the Ashley Madison site/company is paying them?

I see where Lombardi is going--

A lot of these sites are free for women and cost money for guys.  The guys sign up thinking there are legitimately some lonely women out there trying to find a fling (and I'm sure there are), but largely its escorts looking for a new client base.

The guys paying, meanwhile, go online see all these profiles of women and assume there's tons of lonely women looking to meet them (and seeing the # of women on there, they are happy to pay up).

I've been there PJ,, wife took off and left me with a 2 yr old.

I survived, and life is great for both my son and I.

and if any of those ****ers on Ashley Madison wreck their kids lives because they can't keep their pants on, then hacking them and spreading what sort of dirty scum they are is the least of what should happen.

There is really no way to discuss this without sounding like a total pervert. (And for the record, I have never actually used the site. I hope that's clear). I did read an article on Ashley Madison a few years ago, and it seems like the number one complaint is that you can't talk to anyone unless you pay. And your only option for paying is something like a $100 initial fee for "credits."

So guys join, see thousands of women, pay the $100 and start sending out messages....and it's 95 percent hookers writing back. Whenever you find someone to talk to, you may need to spend another $100 or whatever the cost is to have enough credits to actually have a conversation.

I don't know if women cheat as much as men. It's probably in the same ballpark. But I suspect that women cheat differently than men do.

I get all that. What happens when the guys show up to the Ramada thinking they are getting a lonely housewife affair and instead get a lonely housewife affair that also charges them $200?

Seems like business would stop pretty quickly

Edit: just saw LKB's post..Hmm handled on the front end like that. I'm sure they can attract a lot of suckers

Also, women cheat smarter than men do so the statistics are all screwed up.

I'm reminded of a Bruce Bruce standup segment about waking up the middle of the night and your wife/gf is wide awake laying there staring at you. She's plotting. Men don't do that. Women cheat with guys that are across town or out of town. Guys cheat with next door neighbor coworkers and wonder how we get caught.

Ironic that Slateman has that picture.  Last Spring when I was getting help for my depression, I felt I was turning the corner and I really wanted to fall back in love with my wife again.  I wanted to get closer to her again.  For the first time in our marriage, I did the 1-800 Flowers and had some "Peruvian Lillies" (She's from Peru) delivered to her job for our 10th anniversary.  I was trying to rekindle things.

Little did I know that that was when she was being unfaithful.  Another piece of irony is that I closed on my townhouse 2 weeks ago on our 11th anniversary.

I don't know how that transaction goes. I would assume that the hooker wouldn't spring that on the dude. Seems like a waste of time.

Want to know something weird?

The two dudes I know that have had affairs in the last two years (neither were my friends but were husbands of people I've worked with) have had affairs with transsexuals.

I don't know what that means except maybe that online porn is perhaps more powerful than we thought.

Being a single guy who travels a lot for work, I use tinder a decent amount (and not for hookups, but legitimately because my life doesn't allow for me to volunteer or join a kickball team to meet women like normal people would).  Occasionally I get a message from a working girl where she outright says "hey there, I'm $100 an hour with a 2hr minimum."  I'm sure some dudes see the girl's pictures, do the the math in their head and realize they'd probably spend half that on a first date anyways, so why not go for a sure thing.  (For the record I've never paid for those services).

I usually reply with, "oh awkward, I'm actually $150 an hour, so lets meet up and you can pay me the difference when we're done."

I haven't used online dating since 2004 and that really wasn't an issue then.

My understanding is that the Craigslist personals are now nothing but hookers, which makes a fair amount of sense, I guess.

I actually know a guy who met his wife on Craigslist personals.  Very cool girl too, they've been together for ~10 years.  He's the extreme exception though, you're 100% correct, er I guess 99.99999% correct.

I am friends with two women in their mid-30s who are recently divorced and both on Tinder.  The stories they tell about the dudes they chat with on Tinder are just unreal.  Seems like if you're not completely socially inept and/or texting dick pics the first weekend, you're already in the top 20%.

As for the compromised Ashley Madison users...I wouldn't wish identity theft on anyone, but have no sympathy for any other consequences.

Man, that's too bad that ship couldn't be turned around. Praying for you today bro.

I've had a few female friends share online dating horror stories and there are some insane dudes out there.

This is hilarious.

Can't think of any time I've heard of Tinder when it wasn't related to sometning like what you described

I feel ancient, but I'm not entirely sure what Tinder is. Is that the one where you just scroll through pictures?

Pretty much.  You post like 5 pics of yourself and write a short bio.  Then you get to see others' bios (randomly sent to you) and you just swipe right if you're interested and left if you're not.  If two people both swipe right for each other then they are 'connected' and can message each other back and forth.

Well, I am exceptionally handsome so that would work for me.

I really can't imagine a more soul-crushing system.
