Some More Cops Who Need to Be Fired

Minneapolis cops are so offensive that prosecutors have trouble using their body camera footage in court, investigation finds

Prosecutors struggle to use the body camera footage of Minneapolis police officers in court because cops say such offensive things in the videos, an explosive new investigation has revealed.

According to the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, which published the results of a sweeping civil rights probe into the Minneapolis Police Department on Wednesday, officers often say disrespectful and offensive things to criminal suspects, bystanders, and witnesses.

Prosecutors in Minneapolis and Hennepin County said this makes it difficult to use body camera footage in court, according to the report, adding that MPD officers are "much less professional and respectful" than those in neighboring departments.

"When MPD officers scream obscenities at community members, it makes it challenging for prosecutors to do their job and therefore undermines the criminal justice system," the report said.

The two-year investigation was launched shortly after a Minneapolis police officer murdered George Floyd — a Black man — and relies on over 10 years of data on arrests, police stops and searches, trainings, policies, and more.

Former policeman is sentenced to 5 years for the rough arrest of a woman with dementia

A former Colorado police officer shown on body camera video roughly arresting a 73-year-old woman with dementia and later seen joking about it with colleagues was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison.

Austin Hopp arrested Karen Garner in 2020 after she left a store without paying for about $14 worth of items in Loveland, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Denver. Police body camera video shows that after she turned away from him, he grabbed her arm and pushed her to the ground, still holding the wildflowers she had been picking as she walked through a field.

Hopp had faced anywhere from probation up to eight years behind bars after pleading guilty to second-degree assault in March under a deal with prosecutors that was opposed by Garner's family. He had faced a mandatory prison sentence of between 10 and 32 years under an original, more serious assault charge.

The footage shows that when Hopp had Garner pushed against the hood of his car, she tried to turn around and repeated that she was trying to go home. He then pushed her back against the car and moved her bent left arm up near her head, holding it, saying, "Are you finished? Are you finished? We don't play this game."

A federal lawsuit that Garner filed claimed he dislocated her shoulder. The city settled the lawsuit for $3 million, money which her family has said will pay for the around-the-clock care she has required after her condition deteriorated following her arrest.

Police station surveillance video released by Garner's lawyer showed Hopp and others talking and at times laughing or joking about the arrest as they watch the body camera footage with Garner in a holding cell nearby. At one point, Hopp told the others to listen for the "pop" during the part of footage when Garner's shoulder was allegedly dislocated.

Sanders can then be seen on the body-cam taking a step backwards, partially concealing himself behind a refrigerator, while raising his hands. But the officer fires four shots—just seconds after Sanders had exited the house. Sanders was holding what appeared to be a white baseball cap.

Even as Sanders lay screaming on the ground, he tried to sit up and raise his hands again. The officer fired another seven times. It matched a medical examiner’s report, which said Sanders was shot 12 times.

Sheriff’s candidate ticketed going 107 mph on way to parade

A candidate for sheriff in eastern Nebraska was ticketed for speeding after an officer spotted him driving over 100 mph on his way to campaign at a Cinco de Mayo parade in Omaha.

An Omaha police report says George Merithew was wearing a Merithew for Douglas County sheriff shirt when he was ticketed for driving 107 mph in a 65 mph zone along Interstate 80 in Omaha around 9 a.m. Saturday.

The report says Merithew provided his license and registration when the officer asked, and then showed his retired Omaha police ID badge. He worked for the Omaha department for 25 years before retiring.

Merithew’s campaign said later that he showed his retired police ID badge as part of notifying the officer that he was armed. The campaign acknowledged in a statement that Merithew was speeding but said he complied with the officer before he received a $300 ticket and “will now exercise the same rights every other citizen has to deal with the citation.”

So when police use no knock warrants its ok to shoot them since they're intruders? 🤪

If I had my way, police would be forbidden from carrying guns if they choose to execute a no-knock warrant.  That'll make them think twice.

Video Shows Police Fatally Shoot Grandmother With Dementia In New Mexico Home

Police in New Mexico have released disturbing body camera footage showing an officer fatally shooting a 75-year-old woman with dementia in her home last month.

The woman, Amelia Baca, had become agitated at family members in the Las Cruces home when her daughter called the police for help on April 16. According to family members, Baca was having a mental health crisis.

In body camera video released Tuesday by the city of Las Cruces in response to a public records request, an officer can be seen pointing a gun at Baca through the doorway of the home moments after arriving on the scene.

Baca, who family members said did not speak English, is holding two kitchen knives and shouting in Spanish.

The officer repeatedly shouts at her in English to “drop the knife,” “drop the ****ing knife,” “do it now.” After 38 seconds, he tells her to “put the ****ing knife down” and fires two shots at her.

She died at the scene.

Warning to readers: The video, below, is graphic and disturbing.

Perfect example of why we need to rethink policing in America in the 21st century.

If a mental health professional shows up for this call, solid chance this woman is still alive.

My understanding is that some cities have experimented with sending social workers out first on calls like this with good results.

Yes, Portland has been doing this for a while now, and it has been a huge success.

A Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputy has lost her job after officials say she was arrested for driving under the influence.

Rather surprised.

The above story, to me, sounds like what's supposed to happen. Well, other than her driving drunk in the first place.

She got stopped. She got charged. (She didn't play the Cop Card and the records went away.) She got fired.

My opinion of cops just went up.

I feel like we need to put the entire Uvalde PD in here.  Gutless cowards too scared to go in full SWAT gear, while a bunch of unarmed children are gunned down, but brave enough to taze the brave parents willing to put their own lives on the line to go in and try to save the kids.

Seems our southern border actually has better security than our cities. 😬

Uvalde spends 40% of their budget on police. The school district has it's own police department. They sposidly had plans in place on how to deal with a mass shooting. Yet that didn't do a damn bit of good. Makes you wonder what every city is really spending all those law enforcement dollars on.

Hell the cops wanna point the finger at teachers for leaving a door open. Ugh y'all the ones with the money for military equipment. Teachers can barely afford construction paper n glue for class projects.
