Hmm don't know what to make of this draft. These players might be the start of our core of nasty physical players...but could also be a tackle that strugles in pass pro, an average pass rushing OLB that fits a 4-3 better, RB with bad vision, guard with injury history and bunch of camp folders.

I like the vision that Scot shows but not sure about the picks and how they fit. After the 5th round I don't really see the upside. I rather take a shot there on some high risk guys but I do understand we need (special team)depth bad. They bring that.

I would grade it a B because I like that he has a plan and I like Sherff, Smith, Jones and Crowder as players a lot. Only need to see how they fit in our scheme.

Can't wait for pre-season to start and we see these guys in action. :)

The question is whether this is Scott's vision or Scott's vision tempered by the scouting staff he was stuck with. If we see massive changes along the front office then we'll probably know the answer. McCloughan to a degree has to be empowered or handcuffed by the reports and assessments of his team.

La'el Collins with go down as a cautionary tale in NFL in the coming years. I mean every mock draft had him top 20 pick... And they totally bypassed. Had it been a film you'd say how far fetched it seems.

Got to be worth signing as an UFA right?

I mean whatcha' got to lose with everything to possibly gain?

Hail.

If it's a bad draft then it's on him alone. If he can't find players without a certain level of scouting and also didn't construct such a scouting crew, then he has failed in a big way.

The more people say this was a poor draft, the more likely it was brilliant.  The more highly a draft gets praised the more likely it was terrible.  Go back and look at any draft and see the grades given and just how wrong so many people were.  Heck, the 49ers 2011 draft was given a C grade by Mel Kiper.  Thats the one that had Aldon Smith, Kapepernick, Culliver, and more.  He gave his BEST grade to the Lions.  They only meaningful player they drafted that year was Nick Fairley.

I think its a 50% comparison.

It is a fifty/fifty comparison for Aldon and Preston Smith.  I think they have similar frames and measurables.  Which they do.

I think they are gonna put Preston standing at OLB opposite Kerrigan, and that they will ask Murphy to bulk up an put his hand in the dirt in most packages.  I know I'm in the minority, I just don't think our FO is looking at making Smith bulk up.  I think they're gonna keep him lean and let him rush the passer.

If it's 1 in the AM and Kipper and his dimwit buddy McShane told me it was dark outside, I'm wearing shades and preparing for the sun.

THAT'S how much respect I have for his speculative bunkum.

I know there was a wider point. I just have little time for that dude.

Yes and no. It is on him, but right now he's in assessment mode and that includes the front office scouts. He needs to figure out what he has in them as well. If after minicamps, training camp, etc. he realizes that the reports he got were bad or incomplete then he needs to act. My understanding is that so much work was already done to fire the staff and hire his own at that point would put him impossibly behind the curb.

Now that excuses nothing, but it is something to remember. Scott's job right now is to pick the players and determine whether his staff is the one going forward and that includes the guys on the field, the coaches one the sideline, the trainers in the weight room, the scouts in the Front Office and everyone else.

This is a show me season. Gruden shows up or he's out. RGIII shows up or he's out. The scouts show up or their out. No one shoudl feel secure.

Yeah I'd go hard after Collins but im sure 31 other teams are thinking the same. His decision will likely come down to playing time and how quickly he has the chance to get on the field to impress and possibly earn a new contract...that gives us a good shot since we can just point to Chris Chester.

Worth taking the chance at this point.

Obligatory mention of the Seahawks receiving an F grade for their 2012 draft.

I disagree that this is a show me season for Scot.  If the drafts fails miserably, it's on him.  Don't get me wrong, I liked our draft more than some maybe even more than most.  But I won't be saying 'lets see what Scot can do with his personnel guys' if this turns out to be a waste.

Might have expressed myself poorly. Scott's safe, but this is the year where everyone has to prove their place to him. No one other than Scott is safe in my opinion.

We've picked up Chris Bonner which is real nice.  My #5 ranked QB in this class.

Love it. I picked him up in our Mock Draft. Has all the tools, played in a pro-style offense, just needs time to develop and get up to speed for the NFL.

No. Just no on any level. He's here for his scouting acumen. He ran a scouting service. Even to the extent that he has to listen to the scouts in place (whom he decided to leave in their positions), they need to sell their assessments to him.

If he couldn't run a draft correctly it's entirely on him. Any excuse-making would be laughable.

Isn't not getting drafted the best case scenario for Collins? If he's cleared, he can then have negotiating power as teams battle each other for his services. If he's drafted he's locked into a slot.

The only downside, I think, is he can't re-enter the draft next year which means much lower guaranteed money and signing bonus. He does have more control should he choose to sign.

The other problem with waiting a year is next year he will be much less exciting. People will be focused on next year's shiny toys. Part of the reason he was a highly touted first round prospect was because it was a poor year for o-linemen. He might not rate high next year esp if he doesn't play football for a year.

Yep completely with you there. Wouldn't expect anything from him anytime in the near future but give him a few more years development and we could be on to something. As you say, has all the tools you want from a pocket passer.

I understand.  I guess I don't understand why people don't see Smith as a fit?  He has the same body type as Aldon Smith, and I expect he'll play a similar role.  I'm not saying he's as good as Aldon, who was the better prospect.  Just see some similar traits.

Also, how do we know exactly what the details of Barry's new scheme are?  Isn't it a little premature to write a guy off as a bad fit if we're not sure what his style is gonna be?

You're my boy GHH.  Not taking jabs at you.  Just having civilized conversation. :)

He doesn't compare that well to Aldon Smith.  Smith had uniquely long arms (I think they were almost 36 inches) and a much more tapered cut.  Preston Smith has a much larger trunk, which makes him look like a defensive lineman.  His combine numbers were better than Fowler's and on par with Justin Houston, so I'm not 100% against him as a fit, but unlike Houston he didn't dominate in college.  He has one good season but the rest of his career was pretty indistinct.

The guy I'm mad on passing on is Sokoli.  We got all of Seattle's picks and yet they still get him.  I saw a guy who's ready to contribute earlier than people think and I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up one of the better defensive linemen from the draft.  He was completely miscast in Buffalo's 2 gap 34 and so went almost unnoticed.  Perfect situation would be here backing up Hatcher for a year or two.

The only downside, I think, is he can't re-enter the draft next year which means much lower guaranteed money and signing bonus. He does have more control should he choose to sign.

I imagine he signs with New Orleans, why move far from home?  Born in Baton Rouge, played for LSU, my bet is he'd love to stay in Louisiana and you know Brees would love more talent on the o line.

I'd LOVE to know what had Bennett flagged because he's WAY too talented to drop to the 6th.

And WTF was that? Union Jags? LOL.

Hail.

He was kind of weak at the point of attack and a bit of a tweener.  Likely only gets on the field as a pass rush specialist.

Gah. There are WRs who have a chance to be really good players (Dez Lewis for one) but we're going for guys with just some special teams experience.

Actually I like the Evan Spencer pick.  He has limited tape but he made some plays in his career and his team loves him.  At the very least we're filling out our depth as we need guys who want to play special teams.  I think that's one of the biggest things I see from our late picks this year.
