In the end, Peyton wouldn't have worked for us. The line would not hold up for a truly immobile QB... even one with such a quick release, but more importantly, can you imagine the Shanahan's handing over the keys to the offense to Mannng?  They're micro managers and control freaks.  They would have been adjusting Peyton's footworks not allowing him to audible and basically taking away everything that makes him great. There would have been a mutiny on the team.

I completely disagree with this.  Don't forget, Mike had both Young and Elway, and I think he's much more suited to coaching an established guy rather than grooming a young guy. (Though he did groom both Young and Elway at different points)

 

I also think that Peyton would have made our OL look like a top 5 pass blocking OL in the league.  Because by the time they got beat, the ball would be 15 yards down field.  He gets rid of the ball SO fast that it almost negates the pass rush.  

 

That said, I'm glad they went with RGIII.  Much longer upside.

 

Dirt, if my memory serves, the thing that REALLY took the Peyton thing off the table was the cap penalty.  Given that RGIII costs virtually nothing as a rookie, if they had a full amount of cap room, I could have seen them gong after both. I think it would have been moot, because I don't think Peyton wanted to play in the NFC East with his brother, but I think they would have gone after him harder.  After the cap penalty, it sortof all became irrelevant.

Seantrel Henderson

With starter Cordy Glenn out for the time being, the Bills have gotten an extended look at rookie LT Seantrel Henderson (+2.2) this preseason. Through three games, he appears to be a viable backup at the very least, with his play against the Steelers suggesting he could be even more. Henderson didn’t allow any pressure in his 29 snaps in pass protection, while he got the better of Cameron Heyward on multiple occasions in the running game. It wouldn’t be a rookie performance, however without the false start, the first penalty of his NFL career. He also showed poor effort on a screen, allowing Heyward to tackle the ball carrier for a loss.

 

Martavis Bryant

Bryant's missteps in the preseason opener were more glaring than any other player who suited up for the first time with the Steelers at the end of last week.

"He has the speed you can't coach, the size you can't coach," Steelers wide receivers coach Richard Mann said. "I think he's got a chance to help us, I really do."

And Mann is talking about this season.

"I think we're going through some growing pains with him but we knew that coming in because the guy hasn't played that much," Mann said. "He (started) one year in college and that's not an alibi but the truth."

 

Terrence Brooks

“Terrence Brooks is coming on,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said.

“He’s doing great. He’s learning fast. Safeties have a long way to go as rookies, but he’s doing a good job. He’s going to play a lot this year, no doubt.”

“Terrence is playing well; he’s playing hard. He’s a multi-position guy like all of our guys really are. It’s a possibility.”

PFF Game Notes-Ravens rookie SS Terrence Brooks led the Ravens defense with 44 snaps, 30 of which came in the slot.

 

Gabe Jackson

head coach Dennis Allen singled him out after Friday's preseason win over the Lions.

"I thought he played exceptionally well," Allen said. "I think he's a guy that continues to get better every day. I think he's beginning to be able to adjust to the different things that defenses are giving him. He's a smart player and he's got good instincts, both in the run game and the pass game."

 

Christian Kirksey

Cleveland Browns LB Christian Kirksey is drawing praise from his head coach early on in training camp. "He's been great," head coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday, Aug. 6. "If you were just an observer at practice and didn't have a roster, you wouldn't think he was a rookie. He's great on the practice field. He asks the right questions. He's been very engaging in the meeting rooms." Kirksey is pushing LB Craig Robertson for the starting spot next to LB Karlos Dansby. Even if Kirksey doesn't win the starting job, he might open the season in the nickel package due to his coverage skills.

 
Timmy Jernigan
It sounds like second-round pick Timmy Jernigan is making a serious bid to earn a fair amount of it. Jernigan has proven to be a good fit on the Ravens defensive line, using his size and speed to make plays in the backfield since he started practicing with the team this spring. Defensive coordinator Dean Pees said that 49ers coaches raved about Jernigan when the two teams were practicing together and he shares their positive read on the rookie’s skills.

“Quick, explosive, everything we saw on film, a good draft pick,” Pees said, via the Baltimore Sun. “I really like him. I think he’s practicing really hard. I’m real pleased with where he’s coming, learning every day about the system. It’s a little different than what he did at Florida State. Very active.”

 

Jordan Matthews

 

Hyperactive Jordan Matthews disappointed an Eagles fan base who had high expectations for him in his first preseason game. A more relaxed Jordan Matthews caught nine passes for 104 yards on nine targets, and looked a lot like what he has been showing in training camp every day.

Marqise Lee

Second-round pick Marqise Lee, who was blanked in the preseason opener, had four catches for 27 yards and a touchdown against the Bears on Thursday night.

And he caught coach Gus Bradley’s eye.

The preseason’s leader in receptions through two games is rookie wide-out Jordan Matthews of the Philadelphia Eagles. Actually, his 13 catches, 16 targets, 118 yards and 88 yards after the catch have him among the leaders in each of those basic receiving categories at this early juncture, but his PFF receiving grade sits at just -1.7. What gives?

So a Draft Pick and a Free Agent some people wanted just got released in Atlanta according to ProFootballTrash, of which I won't link.

Yawin Smallwood and Pat Angerer.

I wouldn't mind looking at Smallwood as a potential practice squad guy, but I imagine that's what the Falcons are thinking too.

Ethan Westbrooks is absolutely lighting it up for the Rams. UDFA too....

 

Hmmm....if the Lams keep Sams, that would probably mean Westbrooks gets cut. I wonder if the Skins would make a move to sign him? 

 

Are guys that get cut immediately available to sign with any team or do they have work their way through the waiver process?

Chris Clemons, S, HOU: +2.6

One surprise for me was how little interest Clemons got this offseason as a free agent. While not up there with the elite safeties in the league, he’s more than competent and there were plenty of free safety-needy teams this offseason. Clemons has been solid this preseason, firstly as a backup and then starting the game against the Broncos. He’s competing with Kendrick Lewis for the starting spot, and hasn’t done himself any harm with his play on the field.

Key Stat: Three of his four tackles against the Atlanta Falcons resulted in defensive stops.

Man a lot of people were talking about Seantrel prior to the draft. He had his issues and risk but man I was really hoping we would take a chance on him late.

I wasn't happy with the Bolser pick. Would rather have gone with the potential upside at a need position over Bolser who seemed destined to not make the roster. I'm glad Moses has been playing well but you can never have too many good OL

Oh well, hindsight and all.

Ok folks, final cut-down day run-through of the folks I've been tracking.  A few notables:

 

1. most of the 7th rounders and UDFA that we tracked made teams.  There were some that didn't, that might be surprising.  Skov with the 49ers is a little surprising.  

2. The Bills picked a bunch of OL in the draft, and their first pick doesn't seem to be doing great, but their 5th and 7th rounders look like steals.

3. Very few guys listed on the official depth charts at the moment are listed as starters.  Almost all are backups.  Which is what you would expect for rookies. 

 

And with that, happy reading.  (I bolded the cuts, so they stand out, in case folks are particularly intested to see if there's anybody they want a second shot at.)

Cyrus Kouandjio - (OT) Bills: I couldn't really find any news about him, except that it looks like he's been a little disappointing. This from Pro Football Focus:

 


Breakdown: The second-round pick from Alabama continued his disappointing preseason, allowing a sack, a hit and two hurries against the Lions. On one running play, he was beaten backside so quickly he had to resort to tripping the defensive lineman.Signature Stat: -10.4 overall in the preseason with 13 total pressures allowed.


 




Joel Bitonio - (OT) Browns: No real news except that he's listed as the starter on the Browns official depth chart. 

Jordan Matthews - (WR) Eagles: Not much news I can find, except that he's listed as second string behind Brad Smith on the Eagles official depth chart. 

Marqise Lee - (WR) Jags : All the current news is about his 57 yard catch from Bordles.  He's also listed as a starter on the depth chart.
