DS - The Redskins' Incompetent PR Guy Is Also A Giant Cry Baby

One word...disturbing.

My question...is this something we're stuck with?

The board is owned by the team & open to the public. Think about it. Geez.

Have to wand the car & house to make sure there aren't any bugs or cameras...

And watch out for twitter eggs. ;)

Wow, so they closely monitor this site for opinions and such?  I guess when fans have passionate debates with one another, it really might have an influence on the direction of the team lol.   Is it our fault that Fassel didn't get the job lmao?  Did Snyder come here and change his mind?

This really highlights the true problem with our team.  More concerned with what people think than doing their job.  This type of insecurity shows me that their are too many in this organization that don't know what they're doing.  If you're confident in your abilities, you don't care what people say.

The team bought the board some years back.  You can imagine the debates when we went from a privately run, Diehard and crew, to being absorbed by the team.

Unprofessionalism is a word that keeps popping in my head when I read this thread.  It starts with the owner, how he presents himself, to the kind of people he hires to run his organization.

They have people that look at this board all day bro. They also have people that sit and listen to 106.7 & 980 all day long and report what it said about the team. Everyone who is credentialed is monitored on social networks by the pr department. Modern day NSA stuff bro.

And you know this how?

I said as much about Wylie early on in the 106.7 the fan skit-gate.  Just that if Larry or Cooley wanted to gripe that they had a right to, but not through the Redskins and that Tony Wylie shouldn't have gotten involved.  Because ultimately it does make us look petty.

You're the Washington Redskins... act like it.

Remember, Wylie was a decorated PR man everywhere he'd been and even won "NFL PR Man of The Year" for the Texans just before we hired him.  He was a top notch guy for Houston.

So if he's pretty good everywhere else he's been he should be pretty good here, right?

Apparently, I'm the exception. I think Tony is a great guy. And that's based on 3 personal encounters with him:

#1 - In 2011, my wife & I and my best friend were in the Ritz Carlton lounge in St. Louis Saturday night before the Skins played the Rams. Tony & 3-4 other people were sitting at the bar and overheard my wife commenting about the Skins. He turns around and asked us if we were Redskins fans. My wife said yeah, we were all born & raised in DC and were in town for the game. He then asked if we needed tickets for the game. We politely said no, explaining my friend was a Rams STH. So he asks how many people were going (my buddy's son & girlfriend were also going). I told him 6. He pulled out a stack of on-field passes and handed me 6 of them. Told us to have fun. Sunday at the game, we tracked down Tony while we were on the field to make sure we had a chance to thank him. He was extremely cordial, told us to hold on so he could let Mr. Snyder know we were there. He walks over and says something to Dan who turns around and waves to us. Tony came back and thanked us for using the tickets.

#2 - In 2012, we return to the St. Louis Ritz Carlton lounge Saturday night before the game. The lounge was more crowded than 2011, but my wife saw Tony trying to escort MShanahan through the crowd. So my wife says "Hi, Tony, can I get a picture with Coach?" Sure. So I snapped a picture of my wife standing with Shanahan. Before Tony walks away, he comments on seeing us in 2011, asks if we need tickets or pre-game field passes. We told him we had tickets but would appreciate 6 field passes. He went on to say it was a good thing we caught him because he was getting ready to leave to go to his mothers house for dinner. He told us to wait as he went upstairs to his room, came back down & handed us 6 field passes. Again telling us to have fun. We couldn't find him on the sidelines as they changed the rules on exactly where you could go with the passes (2011 we roamed the entire field. 2012, not so much).

#3 - 2013 training camp in Richmond. My wife worked as one of the ambassadors. One of the last days she worked, she was finally able to track down Tony to say hi. They talked about the previous 2 years in St. Louis and how much we enjoyed the field passes. This was the time of training camp when the volunteers were ****ing about only getting preseason tickets for their work. So Tony asks my wife if she would be willing to be interviewed by the local RVA television station regarding the situation. He never asked her what she was going to say before asking her to do the interview. She said, sure, I'll do that. He set up the the interview and she was on the local news for about 45 seconds giving her opinion of the situation (Several other volunteers were also in the segment). After the interview, he was very cordial in thanking her for volunteering, and said to track him down if we ever go to other Skins away games.

So this is my impression as a fan. Never did I get the impression he was a self-centered prick. He didn't need to do any of this for us. But he did and we are thankful for it.

Today's Wyllie moment:

"As (Bruce) Allen’s conference was winding down, a television reporter with a history of asking confrontational questions raised his hand and was handed a microphone, at which point communications director Tony Wyllie signaled to end the meeting. The reporter, WUSA-TV’s Dave Owens, waved off the team employee trying to retrieve the microphone; Wyllie then walked over and, after a brief tug of war, pulled the microphone from Owens’s hand."

LOL.  It's such absurd behavior that it's actually funny.  Seriously, this is how 3rd graders act.

Reports from yesterday at Skins Park are hilarious.

Seems like it was an absolute cluster **** by our PR department. I expect nothig less...

Seemed to be a bit of an uproar about the team protecting Mikes privacy. Seemed like they wanted to let him leave without the media all over him. I have to respect the organizations decision for that. Media has caused enough problems for our team this year.

Yup -- he does sounds like a nice guy in those particular situations.  But lets be honest, you and your wife are obviously super fans of the team (nothing wrong with that at all BTW) and happen to have the cash to travel to away games and stay at the Ritz Carlton.  I'm going to assume that's where the Redskins staff stays for away games,...at least in St Louis?  And I'll assume you probably know this as well.  Anyway,....why wouldn't he be nice and generous to people that are obvious super fans of the team?  Makes perfect sense.

I think the crux of the arguement in this thread is that he doesn't necessarily execute his duties as the PR directory, VP, etc, in the best possible fashion.  Convicing super fans like you and your wife that the Redskins are a top flight organization isn't hard to do.

Making Dan out to be a victim in his libel suit,....threatening to sue a radio station because they made fun of the Redskins,....pulling the microphone away from Dave Owens yesterday, etc.....it's embarrassing and ridiculous.  Quite trying to control the message/information like North Korea.  Answer questions, be engaging.  Field a superior product, win more than you lose and everything else will take care of itself.

What I don't understand is why all of those controls have to be in place.

Lets start at the beginning.

1. You know that there will be a media storm first thing in the morning. Why is Redskins Park locked up? Jeez, why not have it unlocked and have coffee and such waiting on the media? Would it kill someone to have a little class?

2. Media members peeking out the curtains while interns try to cover the window with blankets and scotch tape? I'm speechless. Seriously

3. Regarding Wylie, I kind of understand his frustration with David Owens. I mean, you ended the press conference, who does Owen think he is by waving everyone off? But here's the thing, why not just kill the power to the microphone? Why stoop to his level? Sort of ridiculous.

Honestly, a little bit disappointed in Bruce Allen here.
