Kiem: The Issue With Morgan On Returns

@john_keim seems like Morgan lets LOTS of punts hit the ground. Trouble judging ball in air? No confidence fair catching? #redskinsmailbag

Keim: It’s the result of never having done it in his first five years in the NFL. Nor did he do it much at Virginia Tech -- 14 times to be exact. I think it’s a bit of everything: learning how to judge the ball in the air -- it’s much different than kickoffs -- and having the confidence to go make the catch. Not everyone feels comfortable doing this and he does not look comfortable. He’s an emergency fill-in.  The Redskins were thin on returners at the start of camp (Richard Crawford) and it’s having an effect now.

Doesn't it seem like they gave up on Chris Thompson a little too quickly?  He did show some flashes in preseason.  Unless he's dropping everything kicked to him, why not get him back up to speed?  The bar is not set very high on the return game right now.

Thompson would take up a spot as just a returner, he's not built to block and we already have a third down back playing well. Morgan can at least line up as a WR and even if he doesn't get many catches he can block well.

I think it was a decision making thing with Thompson, too.  I do think Thompson left any TDs on the field because the unit is still getting used to the new blocking scheme, but he did give us some bad field position based on his decision making (just like Morgan has).

I agree with PJ, Tana needs to be back returning punts.  I was against it earlier because I didn't want him getting hurt, but he hasn't really contributed very much in the passing game.  Let him back there.

KR should be Niles Paul and it's not even close.

Hello?  Moss?  He's not doing much else.  I'd rather have him back there.

Yep.  Needs to be returning punts PJ.  Should've started after the second game in a row where he was dropping passes.

I love Tana, but he's got to contribute to the football team.

Exactly.  I don't really understand the logic of not having him back there and having a guy in Morgan that's never done it before.  I think it must speak to who they think is more expendable.  That's the only thing I can think of.

At minimum, Moss will judge the ball correctly and make smart decisions with it.

Perhaps Thompson should get another chance. He can't be worse than Josh Morgan.

Rambo was benched and when his opportunity to play again arrived, he showed some improvement. Maybe Thompson could follow in his footsteps if given the chance to return kicks once more.

Eh, lots of teams use a roster spot on a return specialist.

In fairness to Thompson, he didn't return punts either in his college days.  I still have hope for the young guy, just don't think he's quite gotten over his knee surgery yet.  It's obvious to me that the staff still feels like he's got potential, because he's still on the 53.

Crawford's injury really hurt us back there.  I miss that kid.

Returning punts really is an art form.  Calling for a fair catch and running up and grabbing it in traffic to save the "roll" yards takes confidence.  I don't think Morgan has that confidence.  I also think the staff told him to err on the side of caution, and he's probably taken that way too literally.

some of us seem to be talking about punts and some about kickoffs.

i agree with many that Moss is currently the best option at punt returns.

as for kickoffs ... Morgan is NOT getting it done, and Niles Paul doesn't exactly instill me with any more confidence.  Chris Thompson showed some sick moves in the pre-season.  I say we sprinkle him in there.

I don't know that you activate him, though.  Maybe you activate him for Aldrick... but you have to weigh that.

I don't remember Thompson being special on KR in pre season either.

But as far as Niles goes, his one KR this year went past the 25 yard line.  I will take that just about every time... with the occasional 40 yard return he'll give you.

The current group has given us an average starting field position of the 22 yard line, which is worst in the league.

I watched the shortcut of the Chargers game yesterday. It was a return that Paul caught instead of Morgan. He had a burst on his return. A small burst, but a burst nonetheless. I can't say that for Morgan. He has no explosiveness on his returns.

Yeah, and he debowed that ball and I don't even think Josh went up to block for him

I'm not saying he is going to go out there and take it back for a TD, but if he gives you a Rock Cartwright-like effort of consistency where you are between the 25 and 30, that's a win for me.

Yep. The good starting field position would make the offense much efficient in my opinion.

Oh well, I am not an NFL coach so I guess I just don't understand. No matter how simple it may seem.
