All Things North Korea Thread

It still takes some balls to waltz across the North Korean border, fruitless endeavor or not.

I think this is probably trumps best chance at a real accomplishment... so far no new Nuke Tests or Balistic Missile tests, that is some small measure of progress.

What a waste. Kim Jong Un continues to outplay Agent Orange.

Scenerio 1: In order to build prestige and loyalty within the ranks of his army, Kim launches yearly nuclear tests.

Scenerio 2: In order to build prestige and loyalty within the ranks of his army, Kim meets with world leaders on his terms.

Everything else equal (unclean development, icbm development, human rights violations), do you really prefer the first scenario?

A. He knows his nukes work already. It's an empty gesture.

B. He's never giving up his nukes now that he knows he can get concessions from the US for nothing.

This is all building up to Agent Orange selling NK as a legitimate nuclear power to the American public in return for an empty paper bag named "An End to the Korean War" or dumping it on the Democrats and blaming them for "squandering his 'peace'".

I'll give him props though for playing an American public (and media!) which doesn't really care about foreign policy details.

Both th these things are true under either scenario, but which scenario do you like better? The one where he testing nukes or the one where he shaking hands?

The one where we aren't giving up concessions for empty bags.

Every Republican who claimed or expressed outrage at Obama "bowing" ought to feel deep remorse.

Lmao. You still think these people have any shame. These people are lunatics. Stop waiting for them to have any shame or remorse, any type of introspection.

Once again, that poster don’t live on Planet Earth. We really need to stop giving people like that the time and day.

Dems have to be careful here.  A perfect solution in North Korea is probably not obtainable by any administration (a peaceful and voluntary denuclearization without any precondition).  Only one country in the history of the world has voluntarily and peacefully dismantled its nuclear program after attaining the bomb.  The chances of NK being the second one seems pretty unlikely.  Given that, Dems should be focused on what a decent US victory in NK should look like, not set impossible goal post for Trump or any other GOP admin and then say "whoops, we can't do it either" after taking over.

North Korea as part of the global community open for business....

I'm reminded of a cartoon from the 70s. Richard Nixon is walking through a cave, with flames rising everywhere. He's holding one hand before him, with something dripping from it.

Caption:  three things I will do, if re-elected. Break the back of inflation. End the war in Vietnam. And carry this snowball through here.

You should have started with the end of their death labor camps.

Why would they end this practice when the world is perfectly fine with China using political prisoners as organ farms while carrying out cultural genocide against the Uighur Muslims and Tibet?  North Korea knows the reason is power.  China has it, they did not, but now they do thanks to their nuclear weapons.

The reality is NK will get away with their camps and yet unknown sins in the future because the west won’t go to war.  They’ll piss and most but in the end they’ll negotiate.  North Korea called the world’s bluff, and now the only thing that remains to be resolved is how the world’s leaders can move forward while saving face.

I think it’s nearing time to admit that the US lost.  North Korea built nukes despite decades of saber rattling that have now proven to have been empty threats.  That argument is over, North Korea won.

We’re not going to war with a nuclear power on China’s doorstep.  We all know it.

I agree.  And that's why US has to think about a reasonable outcome.  What scenarios would be acceptable as a resolution to the North Korea situation (keeping in mind that it will likely be repeated in the future) is the central question.  The ship has sailed on the ideal outcome.  They built the bomb and proved willing to witstand world pressure to the detriment of their own people and by siphoning enough resources under the radar.

Seems to me, if NK eventually dismantles the program (or at least enough to give cover to the world saying "see NK nuke program is gone") in exchange for security guarantees and financial incentives, that's probably a decent enough outcome to call it a day and go home.
