Half Life 2 is my favorite. Such a great game for its gameplay mechanics, physics and graphics. Its enviroment was also one of the most immersive. City 17 anyone?

Coming in at #2 would be Portal. What an amazing concept. Awesome black humor and a just a rewarding experience. Remember, the cake is a lie.

Mutliplayer games:

Counter Strike: Source

Left 4 Dead 2

and the first Halo

oh man I used to play I and II on PC. I had the whole place mapped out on graph paper

hells yeah! We did the exact same thing.

I remember the 1st time I walked out of town and I could go wherever I wanted. I was in heaven and I also got my butt kicked early and often. I was the adventurous sort and just had to know what was behind that next block on the map.

It varies depending on the year, my mood, and what you mean by the question. Madden 2004, NHL 08, FIFA 10, all the PS2-gen GTAs (III, VC, SA), GTA IV, Rome: Total War, and Medieval II: Total War are the games I've logged the most time on, and depending on when I'm asked this question, any of those could be the answer. At the moment my favorite is definitely Uncharted 2. Probably the best overall gaming experience ever, but it was really short, so I can't really call it my favorite of all time.

I have to go with GTA San Andreas. I've spent more time on maybe a couple of games, and Uncharted 2 and GTA IV and maybe a couple of others like Halo 3 are certainly better games, but the sheer scale and variety of things to do in San Andreas, and the fact that 3 years after it came out I was still finding things to do that kept me entertained puts it at the top of my list. There's just no other game that can have you fly across the desert on a jetpack, land in Haight-Ashbury, steal a motorcycle, gun down pedestrians to the tune of Freebird until the FBI chases you to the Hollywood Hills where you promptly steal a helicopter, land on top of a casino in Las Vegas, parachute off the roof, and drive up and down the Strip doing drive-bys in a Porsche until SWAT finally takes you out with a cannon mounted atop an APC they're driving. And that's all outside of the main mission, which takes probably 50 hours to complete, and involves UFOs and ****. It's just too much, man. I just want to go get a copy and play it again. I wonder if it's backwards-compatible with PS3?

Darn, ya beat me to it.

And I suppose if I don't metion God of War, there's some type of blasphemy on my part...

But b/t old school Pong and new school GOW, I'd have to say I enjoyed Super Mario for the SNES with Yoshi; Diablo 2, Age of Empires, and Roller Coaster Tycoon for computer; and 007 for N64.

Super Mario Bros 3 I still think is the best video game of all time. Regardless that, Ninja Gaiden (any of them), Fight Night Round 4, Animaniacs, Super Street Fighter: The New Challengers, Unreal Tournament, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Those are some of my favorites but Super Mario Brothers 3 is probably my all-time favorite.

FNR4 was excellent, but other than the graphics and the ability to exclude legends from career mode, I don't see how it tops the original. MoH:AA, if I remember correctly, was the first game to have a really good Normandy level, so it definitely deserves props (unless that was CoD? don't think so, though).

The main reason I'm responding to your post, however, is SMB3. It was a good game, but frankly, I don't get all the love. EVERYONE talks about how it's the best Mario game, and I just don't see it. The original was perfect, and then they completely screwed the pooch with the second by giving the US something that wasn't even a Mario game, and then they gave us another Mario game, but they added all this stupid **** like raccoon hats and power buttons to it, and I'm like, come on, just let me jump on some ****ing walking mushrooms and ****. The original and Super Mario 64 were the best. Why does everyone love SMB3? Same with Sonic 3. Sonic 3 was good, but it wasn't as good as the first one, and it definitely wasn't anywhere near as good as the second one.

Edit: Also, you mentioned Animaniacs, which I don't ever remember playing, but it brings up a good point; remember the days of abundant good games from non-game licenses? Cool Spot comes to mind instantly, Yo Noid was awesome, at least when I was like 6. Movie games weren't assumed to be horrendous. I miss that.

I liked the changes that they made to the control system in FNR4, along with the change to the countering and blocking system. The changes that they made, imo, made the game much more enjoyable to me. I like the other versions, but the controls were so damned unnatural to me for some reason, and the countering system was ridiculous, same with the blocking. You'd block for an hour while a guy would throw punches and it didn't affect you at all. Once you blocked them just right you'd have an entire second or two before he would even recover leaving him a sitting duck. The change made it so much quicker that you had to be on your A game, you can't just sit and block the entire time and then counter when the time is right. So I think the changes made the game 10x better.

As far as SMB3, sorry, I disagree I thought the changes really opened up the game much more than previous versions. I still will play that game and explore the levels. I thought the racoon suit was cool, same with the frog suit. They only worked in specific levels, which again, changed how you played each map. It's not like you were forced to use any of those items. If you wanted you could have just jumped on walking mushrooms "and ****".

Anyway, I agree with you about the non-game licenses. **** there was a Michael Jackson Moonwalker game, and it was awesome. RoboCop, the game, was awesome, the Simpsons games were always fun, Batman was pretty beast and seriously who can forget the TMNT games? There were a lot of good games based on movies, cartoons/tv shows, etc. I don't know what happened, but I wish they would get back to whatever formula they were using. I think it's just that when 3D games came about it changed the way the game was presented, so it wasn't as linear as the movie, you could explore more and they tried to force content that didn't need to be there.

Edit: Yes MoH:AA was the first one. CoD came after it, one of the producers of MoH:AA left EA to join Infinity Ward and helped them create CoD.
