For someone who doesn't listen to DC sports talk, you really seem to care alot about it.

I couldn't care less. So what if BMitch and Doc think that DC fans don't support all their teams. Is that going to make me any less of a fan? No.

And me 30. But I've never noticed it.

Then you need to open your eyes. Allow me to enlighten you:

This town only cares about winning. In business or in sports. This town is filled with white collar, bandwagon jumpers.

i get that,  but i remember when wilbon famously said dc was the 'worst' sports town in america. i figured one way to define that would be attendance, and not just attendance when the team was good, but also when they are bad.

i looked up a few cities that are thought of as good sports cities (of course i cant recall which ones) and it seemed that dc is no different that just about anyone. attendance drops when the team isnt good.

hell, i wish i had a picture of it, but it was just a year or two ago when i tuned into the final 10 minutes or so of a steelers game and it was at about 25% capacity. i think they were down by 10 or something- definitely within reach. that blew my mind a bit.

now the redskins are still one of the most valuable franchises in the NFL (or all of sports, even) is a mystery to me, since we've stunk for 20 years. not sure how the team still makes money.

Just like any other city in America?

Dude. I grew up listening to 14 hours of local radio per day. I know sports talk. And it's really bad right now. Really.

I remember that rant by Wilbon. It was typical Wilbon: bash DC sports, get ratings/clicks, profit. Detroit was the one that stood out. Lions, Tigers, and Pistons games are all empty when the teams are terrible. Only the Red Wings really draw consistently.

The idea that DC is not a sports town is tiresome. So-called "passionate" "die hard" Phillies fans have deserted that team: now 20th in attendance. Not much different that the early days of the Nationals--without any history or identification with the team. Passionate KC, who just went to the World Series? We are drawing about 1000 more fans a game.

Everyone says that we only support a winner? But, as everyone loves to point out in every DC sports thread, except this one, apparently: We haven't won ****.

It dawned on me the other day, why the paucity of coverage of other teams than the Redskins. The Redskins are an awful joke of an organization. Yes, St. McCloughan brings a legitimacy to the front office. But the team is still run by the worst PR team in the league and an owner who really just can't keep his foot out of his mouth. Who wants to talk about Mike Rizzo being one of the best GMs in the league? The Wizards coverage spiked up when they were struggling and DC media starting ripping on Wittman and Grunfield. When teams are well-run, professional, organizations, there isn't as much to talk about--and, more importantly, DC mediots have to actually put some thought into their shows/columns.

It's much easier "click-bait" to over analyze and dissect what Robert Griffin said and what he might possibly be thinking than it is to talk about Bryce Harper's maturation. Hell, Matt Williams was on the other day--1st thing they talked about was Strasburg.

when i hear chris russel talk a part of my brain grabs a knife and then stabs the rest of my brain with it

over and over and over

Has that guy ever finished a complete thought or sentence?  Or offered valid insight that I respect about any topic ever?  No to both.

He's right. All the BS about this being a transient town is garbage.

"Get your head out of Ashburn and look around"

Dude, I live in Alexandria and grew up in Chantilly/Herndon and about 75%+ of the people I meet anymore that live in DC or Arlington are NOT from this area.  So many folks come here for school or just for the job market.  I'm not sure what percentage of residents must be from out of the area for it to be considered "transient", but I'm willing to bet DC meets the minimum qualifications with ease.

I just wanted to brighten everyone's day!

WTEM Ends "Man Cave" - 10/28 - Just over half a year after launching the locally-based "Man Cave" morning show, Dan Snyder owned Red Zebra's WTEM, ESPN 980, will pull the plug immediately. Today's show was the last. The sports talker will restore ESPN Radio's "Mike And Mike" to morning drive. Nationally syndicated "Mike And Mike" has been airing on Red Zebra's other sports talker, WSPZ, 570, which has a weaker signal than WTEM. While the "Man Cave," which was launched in late March after a delayed original start date and hosted by Jason Reid and Chris Paul, trailed badly in the overall radio ratings behind the "Sports Junkies" on CBS's WJFK, 106.7 The Fan, it was increasing in its numbers among key male demos, we're told by some sources. Says WTEM Program Director Dan Zampillo, "Unfortunately we were not able to obtain the consistent level of ratings success needed in morning drive over the last seven months, and therefore felt the need to make this change"

980 has made some weird choices lately. I didn't like The Man Cave, but how is Mike and Mike any better?

Mike and Mike can be a bore.

And they are too New York-obsessed. The first two hours of the show, they spend talking about the Jets (especially the Jets), Giants, Yankees, Mets, or Knicks. Depending on the time of year.

It's very tiresome.

love cooley.  mike and mike are boring.

can't stand kornheiser.  like, why do i need to hear an old man name drop C-list celebrities and spout every tired cliche old man opinion on earth while 3 other people kiss his ass for 3 hours?  i'd rather listen to the Fran Drescher Hour with special guest, nails on a chalkboard.

Hoffman doesn't bother me but Chris Russell didn't either. I'll take either of them over Sheahan and Loverro, and everyone at 106.7.

I had Kornheiser on today.  Fascinating discussions about movies I'll never see and why he disagrees with a coach who did some prayer stuff with his students.  sarc off.

I'm betting in 2017 Cooley will be on Fox or CBS doing football analysis either in the booth or on one of the pre-game shows.

I didn't like it but I don't think I was their target demographic.  My college-age son liked it.

I'm surprised that 980 even got the green light to air The Man Cavd in the time slot that it was in (6-10AM). I've been to LA, NYC & Chicago, and whenever I've listened to ESPN Radio in those cities, they all have Mike & Mike on, and I know that both NYC & Chicago play ESPN National programming until about 12PM Mon-Fri. That surprised me, because NYC & Chicago are both better sports towns than DC, so you would think that they would have local sports programming on all day like 980 does. I also read somewhere that Mike & Mike is on about 98% of ESPN affiliates, including all of the major cities across the country. I don't think 980 will be putting anything in that 6-10 slot again.

Welp, a huge shakeup down at the ESPN980 studios.  Pretty much every single timeslot has changed.  More info here:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc-sports-bog/wp/2016/04/08/chris-cooley-in-the-morning-return-of-sports-reporters-coming-to-espn-980/

Essentially, the new timeslots are:

5-7am:  The Morning Blitz with Al Galdi

7-11am:  Cooley and Sheehan

11-1pm:  Tony Kornheiser Show

1-4pm:  Inside The Locker Room with Doc Walker, Brian Mitchell, and Scott Jackson

4-7pm:  The Sports Reporters with Andy Pollin and Steve Czaban

7-10pm:  DMV Gametime with Tim Murray and Nick Ashooh

Wall-to-wall coverage, I do like that.  Very surprising that Thom Loverro is out at 980.  I enjoyed his high-pitched tit-fits when he got excited or called out on something.

Interesting, to say the least!

He would troll Sheehan all the time and it worked. I will miss that and his Dr. Marvin Monroe impression.

Can't stand Tony.  That's a rough lunch listen.

I have a soft spot for Andy.  He'll talk with you if you meet him face to face, which is more than I can say for a lot of the personalities in this town.

I like Czabe the most and I think he gets what he wants with the radio station.  But glad to see Cooley and Sheehan together.  And the EARLY morning stuff is perfect for my early commute when I move back up.  Outstanding line-up in my opinion.
