Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About FedExField

Not sure how I really feel about the ribbon boards. As S&S said, they do add color to the place, but at times I felt like I was looking at a Vegas marquee because it seemed like there was so much motion and blinking. I know the Redskins want to use the boards for advertising, but maybe there's someway to tone it down a bit. I know the Eagles have had ribbon boards at the Linc since the place opened, but never remember feeling distracted as much as I did yesterday.

Also, was it just me, or did there seem to be more music played yesterday than normal? I think its good to play stuff to add excitement, but at times it felt more like a rock concert.

Having said this stuff, need to add the disclaimer that I had taken a red-eye flight from the West just before the game and, despite the excitement to see RG3 and the team in person for the first time this season, probably had me more on the grumpier side than usual. :) I'll have to wait until the first real game on the 23rd to make a more honest assessment.

Hi guys, first time posting so go easy on me. I'm a Redskins fan from Dublin, Ireland who has been following the team since the late 80's but due to the distance and cost, I've never got to go to a game. But it's finally happening! Ive just booked a trip over to see the Vikings game on October 14th. So I'm just looking for a bit of advice on how to make the most of the day. My seat is in section 118, row 4 which I think is ok (am i right?). I'm just wondering what I should see/do both before and after the game and what's good to drink and eat at the concessions? Any tips to get the most of the day will be greatly appreciated!

If you have me, I'd love to come along to the Extremeskins tailgate but I'll be back on closer to the time to chat abou that. I'm like a kid again I'm that excited about finally getting over!

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy your first Redskins game. I see you decided on the "nordic" them for an Irelander. :D At least it is a game we should win and you can leave happy seeing your first Redskins victory in person. Section 118 would be on the Visitors side at about the ten yard line. Bring your sunglasses. You will be on the sunny side of the stadium. Probably will have some Vikings fans around you. And you may find yourself standing much of the game to see the action on the field. Strongly encourage you hit the Extremeskins tailgate prior to the game for you best food and drink. Beer and liquor inside the stadium is expensive. Water and lemonade is $5 per cup/bottle. A bottomless cup of soda is now $10 or $5/6 per cup. Food on the lower level is not all that great. Just nothing special. It's the usual stadium food. You are not allowed to bring in any food, beverages, backpacks, umbrellas, etc. A complete list is on Redskins.com You might want to stop in at the Redskins Hall of Fame store to buy fan stuff. But warning it is packed before during and after the game.

If you are coming for the game, I hope you are planning some extra time to tour the city and the museums. Lots of tourist stuff to do in DC.....Smithsonian Museums, the White House, the Capitol, the Library of Congress, lots of monuments, etc.

Where are you staying and how do you plan to arrive at the stadium will be important. Only people with parking passes can get onto the property via a vehicle, including taxis. Taxis let you off at the edge of the property and let you walk in.

Welcome to the board and Hail!

P.S. You picked the right thread....go to the first post and read all the information that Mark the Homer has assembled. It is THE best source of information about FedEx Field.

Thanks for that SonnyandSam. Some good tips there

I'm in the area for a couple of days beforehand so will have time to see a few of the sites. I'm especially looking forward to going to the Smithsonian. I'm staying in Shirlington so will be arriving at the game by metro and the long walk up from Morgan Boulevard but a good brisk walk never did anyone any harm and it will help me build up an appetite and thirst!

Shirlington has a nice little shopping center with a theater. Its a small theater so you are up close to the play. Not sure whats playing but you can chi it out. Site seeing in dc is great! Oct should be cool enough that walking around the city won't be bad. Or u can just get a metro day pass. Lots of things to see so plan your day. I've enjoyed the natural history, and spy museam. The zoo is fun too but takes up most of your day.

>>Do the exposed steel supports where the seats were ripped out look as unseemly in person as they do on TV? They need to put SOMETHING up there.

Yeah, they make it look unfinished....last Saturday I went down on the Bolt Bus with my brother from NYC (he starting from Boston) to our first Redskins "home" game.

I tell you, FedEx is a couple seasons away from being a dump. It's about as soul-less a stadium as I've ever been in.....this organization needs to move back to DC and it needs to be special.....I mean we drove past RFK on our way out and it's still sooo much cooler looking than FedEx.

Johnny Rockets was good though and it was awesome being amongst Redskins fans although I saw two separate groups of cops escort people from the stadium....for a preseason game?

Btw, why do they pipe in HTTR? You can hear the band just fine.

I also want to give a HUGE thanks to Mark the Homer for this thread b/c without it we would have been buried behind a pillar deep in the "cave" with our original tixs.

NO, NO, NO. We do NOT need a new stadium. All you people wanting a new stadium clearly are not season ticket holders and have no understanding of the impact a new stadium will have on ticket prices. It will price average guys like me right out of the market and drive a lot of non-season ticket holders out also because single game tickets will skyrocket. It has happened in every city over the past ten years and the cost escalates each year. That fancy new stadium you so desires raises costs on taxpayers and on fans. And if you think RFK is "cool" looking, you clearly have never been inside the stadium. Because it IS a dump and was not very attractive or functional when the Redskins used to play there. People have fond memories of RFK because we WON football games. That is why folks go to stadiums in the first place.

Besides, talk to Cowboy, Giants and Jets fans about their new "soulless" stadiums.. Their boards are full of complaints about how little character and life they have. Yeah, some can point to the video screens (We have two also) or certain features. But most of the regular fans are pretty upset because they lost their season tickets or got shuffled to the nosebleed section.

We're fine for a while. We just need to start winning football games at home.

couldn't have said it any better S&S.

The 49ers are stumbling through their SBL sales process. Niner STHs are finally getting their long awaited new stadium, yet message boards indicate a majority of their STHs will not renew in 2014 when prices triple.

I can't imagine it would be much different here.

I'm not a STH (my mom is) and I know getting a new stadium will create the dreaded PSL's, but my reason for wanting a new stadium is twofold. One, Fed Ex is "cookie cutter," It has no personality. Two, it's located in the middle of nowhere. For my own personal reasons, I'd actually like to see our next stadium within the DC city limits. I'm not sure how feasable that is for parking and such. I imagine it will be a nightmare and tailgating would be reduced, but that never stopped people from tailgating at RFK. FWIW, I don't think we'll be getting a new stadium anytime soon, but I think once Fed Ex hits 25 years old, you might see some rumblings from the team about getting a new one.

Having been to Lambeau, Texas Stadium, old Giants Stadium, the Vet, the Linc, LP Field (Nashville), and Candlestick (or whatever name it is this week), I hope we never build a stadium. Green Bay has the right idea -- keep modifying the field they play in. Lambeau has aluminum bleachers and charges $40 to park. Not a peep of complaint from their fans. FedEx has more room to tailgate than any of the other stadiums I have been to, and it isn't really close. Philly and NY is an asphalt jungle with nowhere to expand for the early risers. FedEx has PLENTY of grassy areas so you can have room.

I still don't understand the attraction some have for an architecturally beautiful stadium with fancy amenities. I go to watch Redskins football. Not marvel at a "pretty building". I spend 99 percent of my time in the stadium IN MY SEAT watching the game. The rest of the time I am outside tailgating. I really could care less if FedEx Field is fugly. I admit...it has no character. But I also do not want to mortgage my home to afford a PSL for the privilege of watching Skins games in person. And I highly doubt most DC residents want to foot the bill so some of us can attend Redskins games in a pretty stadium.

What we want and what is reasonable and rational can be two completely different things. I would like to be a billionaire, retire, own the Washington Redskins, drive several fancy cars and have multiple homes in various resort locations around the world. But I live in reality; unlike some.

I've only been to FedEx once. Aside from the terrible traffic on the way out, and some a**hole in my section who was drunk and trying to fight with other Redskins fans, including a nice guy who was there with his daughters, I thought it was a great game experience. It might be cookie-cutter, but it doesn't have to be like Jerry's Death Star down in Dallas to be a decent place to see a game.

RFK was the original "cookie cutter" stadium. Fulton County, Busch Memorial, The Vet, Riverfront all come to mind as stadium designs influenced by RFK's design, the first stadium built without columns obstructing sightlines.

Agreed. I'm fine with the stadium itself, but would like to see a cover for the upper level, and the removal of the seats has given the stadium at least some character, even though I suspect there's more in the works as far as the " look " of the stadium.

When the lease is up, I wouldn't mind haven't it moved back to the city...or in Virginia so it closer to me. I just want it to be more Metro accessible. The hike isn't bad for me, but when my mom or 3yo daughter comes, it's a pain in the butt.

I drive now, but that makes it an all day event. Tailgating is great and all, I wish they had some more things to do inside the stadium. A lot of times I bring friends or family for their first game, so I want to show about the team. Like a small Redskins history museum or display room. Oh and add strawberry milk shakes from Johnny Rockets.

I do enjoy the new ribbon boards though. It pumps up the atmosphere.

I guess the word "cookie cutter" is to mean that all stadiums have the same design, so that was probably the wrong description to use, but it's round, dull.....um....not much to it. It's simple and ugly. I like the new stadiums like New England, Philly, Tampa. They have character. Our stadium is....round.

I really dont have an issue with Fedex. The sight lines are better than they were in RFK. However the seating area is smaller. We did let our season tickets go that we had since 1969. But it was not because of the stadium. It was because they moved our seating location when we moved (went from 50 yard line seats to 30 yard line) and they would not do anything about our complaints. The rows are much closer together in Fedex and people sit through the entire game so my legs are smashed against the seat in front of me. In RFK it didnt matter because you stood for the whole game. I am going to try some of the party deck standing seats at one game this year.

Hey, I got tickets from my boss for section 330 (club level) with purple tickets. The tickets say use the Bud Light Gate, can anyone give me advice on which purple lot to use and which exit to take from 495 east to get there (will be driving from gaithersburg, md)?

You will want to take the beltway to exit 16, Arena Drive. There will be purple lots on your right and left as you approach the stadium; if you park on the right side the Bud Light Pavilion Gate will be directly in front of you.

I think there will be a pretty light crowd for this game, so you will have plenty of room to tailgate. However, LEAVE EARLY! I cannot stress that enough. Even though you are going against the grain of traffic 270 and 495 are an absolute bear during rush hour. If you leave Gaithersburg at 2pm, you should get there around 3. If you leave at 5pm, you will be lucky to make it by kickoff.

The lease at FedEx Field is one of the great mysteries of ES. No one around here really seems to know for sure who the lease provider is, the terms of the lease, etc.

The notion that leases are set in stone and the Redskins are stuck in Landover until 2027 is silly. Even if there is a debt obligation between the team and the state of MD or PGC, debt can be paid off. People break leases all the time, including sports teams.
