Thoughts on Lichtensteiger's return?

Kory Lichtensteiger has been activated and it looks like he's getting his starting job back. I don't really pay attention to individual linemen, so I'm wondering what people think. Has Leribeous been that bad and is Kory that good to come back from IR and start a playoff game?

I don't think that Kory is that good, but I do think that he is much better than LeRibeus. I really hope we go a different direction at center next year. But I'm not sure if I would mess with center right now though. Kirk seems to be getting his snaps and is in rhythm.

Leribeus can't snap the ball and gets beat fairly regularly by the D-Linemen. That's one of the reasons we picked up the De la P. dude off the street. Cory is an upgrade over Leribeus, but we need to definitely look at a bigger stronger center in the draft.

De la puente was waived today I think, which is strange. I would've released leriebus instead.

I can see conflicting justifications, here.

Lich was our season starter.  And starter on those teams, first two weeks, who had that completely awesome run game.

BUT, there's something about not changing horses mid stream.  And we're talking about the guy who snaps the ball.  I can see the desire to stick with what's working, too.

Guess my position is, I will endorse whatever decision our coaches make, at this point.

My guess is that JL is much more valuable as a backup interior lineman. Let's not overlook that, despite some shaky moments, the offense did a very nice job with him starting at C.

LeRib continues to make mistakes even late in the season, e.g., missed snap counts (1-2 times per game), less than optimal snaps in shot-gun (2+ times per game), mistakes in run blocking assignments (he can run quickly but he's often not blocking anyone downfield).  While LeRib is heavier than Lichtensteiger I don't know that LeRib can maintain his set stance and anchor as well as Lichtensteiger.  Obviously the run game has declined but I'm not sure whether the full decline happened when Lauvao went out or whether it continued to worsen when LeRib stepped in.

Lichtensteiger has been playing with the scout team and, IMO if he's fully healthy, should start over LeRib.

Sure, he hasn't been "good" but he was also out of position. I guess what I meant to get across was that I assume they value him as a backup G.

LeRib is far enough from good that the negatives of a change likely are significantly outweighed by the positives.  Lich's ability to help in the run game (hopefully) is huge this week.  GB is in the bottom half of the league with run D.  We need to get that going.  Set up the play action.

If Lich can enable us to set up the run game without having to use Cousin's arm to create room first, that's huge.  Gives us some great variety to throw at them early if both are working, and gives us a fallback plan if GB's pass defense is more stout than expected (or should that be "as stout as expected" because they've been pretty good with the exception of the Cardinals).

Exactly. Who knows if we try to resign JL as a backup for the next few seasons, but he can play a few different spots and can back up the C/LG/RG spots on Sunday.

Totally agree with this, but it does feel like bringing back a center after an extended time off for the most intense matchup this team has had in years is risky.

making  a switch this late in the season is definitely a concern with no time to get back in to live game mode.  But... considering how our run game fell off right after Kory got hurt.. there is the extra bonus of possibly getting our run game back on track which would be huge for the playoffs.

switching concerns me when things have been so good. However while not one of the great centers Lich is much better than Lerib. In blocking, organizing and snapping. Lerib has many bad snaps that Kirk has to adjust in order to field well.

Really tough call for the staff.  Here's my check list.

  • Size:  Leribus
  • Snaps:  Steiger
  • Run blocking:  Steiger
  • Pass blocking:  Wash (Leribus can stop a bull rush better but Steiger has a better handle on picking up stunts)
  • Calls/protections:  Steiger
  • Snap count:  STEIGER!
  • Name pronunciation:  Wash - Their names are butchered as bad as McCloughan's!

You have to go with Steiger here.  Paloffs are now!
