He's probably been knee deep in evaluations and grading to this point re the draft, free agents and our own roster. He's the continuity guy who can explain why/how we have the grades we have on players, help with some self scouting and explain logic (to the extent there is any) around decisions that got us to where we are.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's on a short term lease until after the draft.

Yep, said that earlier, keeping info in house for 3 months likely. Then re-assess.

Starting to see some of the SF model already.

When some of these asst coaches inevitably get hired elsewhere next year Washington likely in line for comp picks.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Harris has enough money to hire a million coaches. If we get a 3rd round comp pick every now and again, it’s probably worth it to him.

I wonder if the Martys are being retained for now to help with decisions on who to resign.  They could help with character traits and some of the behind the scenes stuff for guys like curl. James Smith Williams, obada etc

That's exactly it. They bring institutional knowledge that Peters needs to move forward with in the short term (between now and training camp). They may or may not be retained in the medium or long term - and whether or not they stay is kind of immaterial to the fanbase, since they're not decision makers. They may have input, but no decision-making power. If they are deemed to be needed past the draft, they stay, if not, they go. My sense is that Mayhew will stay, since he worked with both Peters in SF and Newmark in Det.

Oh I'm not mocking it. My point was that we have a pretty crappy and small training facility. I don't think they will add to it. My guess is that it will be replaced one day.

I Googled how many coaches does a NFL team usually have and find that usually there are 12. It varies of course. We have a lot more than 12.

12 seems way low. I suppose it depends on how you count it. But every team has a head coach and the three main coordinators (offense, defense, and special teams). That's 4 right there. Then on offense you have the main position coaches: OL, QB, RB, WR, and TE. That's five more, for a total of 9. And on defense you should at least have DL, LB, and DB. That's three more and twelve total already. But these days, pretty much everyone has some sort of pass rush specialist, either an OLB for a 3-4 defense or a second DL coach in a 4-3 alignment. And most teams would have at least one more secondary coach, be it an assistant or splitting CBs and Ss. That's up to 14. We haven't touched on quality control assistants, though those people tend to be more glorified interns. Also haven't considered an assistant ST coach or an assistant OL coach. Admittedly these "passing game coordinator" and "run game coordinator" positions tend to be fairly new and seemingly superfluous, but Washington is going all in on them. In the end, yeah it's a lot of coaches. But the norm is probably 16+ anyhow.

I'm submitting an application for Senior Assistant Defensive Advisor to the Offensive Passing Game Coordinator, yes it's a made-up title but really, at the current hiring rate in Washington who will notice? I feel pretty good about my chances.

Adam Peters conversation with Martin Mayhew, a dramatic representation:

Adam Peters: So, Martin , can you explain how you came up with the idea of drafting an 88lb DB in the first round?

Martin Mayhew: Adam, my good chum, that was Ron.  I told him he was an idiot, and then he Jack and Marty did what they wanted.

AP: Oh, I see.  Well, can you tell me about the process to sign Nick Gates, and undersized center who wasn't really good at playing Center coming off a significant injury?

MM: Adam, my guy, you see that was Ron.  He likes older, injured players on the offensive line who aren't very good.  I can't really explain why, but he does.

AP: Interesting.  So, is that the same from Andrew Wylie?

MM: Adam, my good chum ... Actually, no.  You see, Eric Beinnemy told us that Eric Beinnemy wanted to sign a player who was familiar with his system, and the Chiefs are too smart to let good players go for nothing, so he signed a bad player they wanted to get rid of.

AP: Right, Coach Reid has played this organization for fools for 15 years.  Got it.

MM: Adam, my dear fellow, how do you think we ended up with EB in the first place?

AP: That is a very good point.  Ok. moving on.  It seems like picking a player to compete for a starting job on the OL would have been a good idea in rounds one or two.  Why did you all pick 2 defensive backs?

MM: Adam, my good friend, I see your confusion.  Let me help clear it up.  Ron really wanted to pick defensive backs. Marty asked me to go fill the coffee right when our pick was made, and when I cam back, we had drafted a backup safety.  I was told it was because Cam Kurl could get hurt.

AP: I thought that's why they drafted Percy Butler?

MM: I think they forgot about that. It had been a year.  Ron's not so good with remembering who's on the roster.

AP: (shakes head).  Ok then, but in the third round, you drafted a center.  But you already had signed a FA starting center in Gates, and a backup center in Larson.  Can you explain the thought process there?

MM: But of course!!! Ron thought it would be a good idea to draft players who might start in 2-3 years.

AP: But he knew he had to win sooner than that, right?

MM: I'm actually not sure he knew that...

AP: So, is there anything you really can tell me I don't already know?

MM: Of course!  Somewhere around April of last year, I decided to switch the office to Starbucks coffee from Foldiers in the coffee machines.  It was a real hit!

AP: Martin, thanks.  Good talk.

MM: Of course! Anytime.

The End.

Number of coaches:

At a bare minimum, you have:

Head Coach

Offensive Coordinator

Offensive Line Coach

Wide Receivers Coach

Running Backs Coach

Tight Ends Coach

Quarterbacks Coach

Defensive Coordinator

Defensive Line Coach

Linebackers Coach

Secondary Coach

That's 11 right there.  Some teams break out secondary into CB and Safety coaches, others don't.

You also typically have some assistant position coaches, like assistant OL, Assistant DL, etc.

Often times, the OL coach is the run game coordinator as well.

However, the passing game coordinator is most often a stand alone position.

I think we're actually somewhat in-line with most teams.  We might have an extra assistant here or there, but we're basically in-line.

Lance Newmark, our new asst. GM got his start in S.D. under Bobby Bethard.

Yes, and the way that Adam Peters drafts is just like Beathard too.  Gems in the middle/late rounds.  Great to have to Beathard protégées here!

It makes sense to keep Mayhew and Hurney around. They're both experienced GMs who can help Peters navigate other areas of the job(all the administrative stuff, salary cap management, etc.). And Hurney does apparently have an eye for talent, he was the only one IIRC that advocated we draft Herbert back in 2020 and has a good reputation in the league for talent evaluation.
