I'm a few days late responding to the thread.  So after watching the game and seeing that Thomas probably will never return to the form we saw a few seasons ago I was very pleased with Cole Turner (hoping he stays healthy) and despite the drop Bates too, if either of these can take the reins then I could easily see the TE being a huge asset to Howells growth and could be just another weapon in this offensive arsenel in 2023.

On which note we apparently just signed Kaden Smith who was with the Giants the first 3 years of his career and started a bunch of game but got hurt.

Not trying to be a smart ass here just wondering why you would say "after watching the game and seeing that Thomas will probably never return to the form we saw a few seasons ago"  when he didn’t even suit up?

I totally understand why you may have that opinion but I don't understand at all why you would take that opinion away from this game.

Looking quickly it appears he got hurt in 2021 and didn't play at all last year.

He was on the colts offseason roster this year but recently released. 

He hasn't played a game in almost 2 years and hasn't caught a touchdown pass in 4 so he's probably camp fodder but we'll see.

 his tiny body of work in the nfl was apparently kicking our ass in 2019 so maybe he just plays well when he's around us.

I should insert a pic here of Daniel Jones but I won't.  Up until this past season he had never lost to us.  He has always played lights out vs us compared to the rest of the league and it's always been due to subpar LB and DB play.

 

I swear if you put any other NFL team in the match up vs Giants instead of us, Daniel Jones wouldn't have gotten the contract he did.

 

I'm happy he got his $$$ because it's going to hinder their ability to spend it more elsewhere on the roster, but I think DJs ceiling is now and it's not that high.

Oh he’s just a guy for sure. He’s a TE2 at best - a guy who gives effort as a blocker and will catch 20 balls a year. Basically another Bates.

 

Assume this though means Thomas is further away from return than we hoped. Which is not good.

I’ll never “poo poo” a solid depth signing. Depth is so needed on your roster and it’s significantly undervalued by “most” fans (this doesn’t include most of the masochists that post here)

 

But man do I want to see us sign a good backer. Why? Well, I think we’re mostly stuck with the OL unless some crazy cut happens…

 

But backer I think we could improve yesterday.

Here is my thought on the 53. I think we will be looking hard at the waiver wire for O’Line and maybe linebacker.

 

QB - Howell, Brissett.

RB - Robinson, Gibson, Rodriquez, Williams.

WR - McLaurin (going out on a limb here!), Dotson, Samuel, Brown, Pringle, Allen.

TR - Thomas, Bates, Turner

OL - Leno, Paul, Gates, Cosmi, Wylie, Lucas, Charles, Larsen, Stromberg, Daniels, Someone not currently on the roster!

 

DL - Young, Allen, Payne, Sweat, Mathis, Ridgeway, Toohill, Smith-Williams, Henry (draft stays saves him), Obada.

LB - Davis, Barton, Hudson, Mayo

DB - Fuller, StJuste, Forbes, Kurl, Forrest, Martin, Reaves (special teams!), Butler, Wildgoose, Johnson.

 

Specialists - Slye, Way, Cheesman.

I'm genuinely curious because I don't know much about who's available.

 

Guys like Kyle Van Noy, Jayon Brown are available. Are they a true upgrade? Not sure. But they aren’t even bringing in guys to get a look. 
 

UDFAs: Merlin Robertson, Colby Reeder, Shaka Heyward.

 

Again… upgrades? Not sure. But we need to try something…

"After watching the All-22 footage, I thought Cosmi was the Commanders best offensive lineman. He looked far more comfortable and protected at guard than tackle, where he struggled to protect the edge without oversetting, which opened up big lanes inside. At guard, he always had Wylie outside of him limiting how much a defender could challenge his outside shoulder. This enabled him to be far more balanced and confident in his sets which in turn let him show off his athleticism.

 

For Cosmi, it was clear to see throughout the game that he was so much more comfortable at guard knowing he had protection outside of him. I was also impressed by the way Cosmi was able to adapt to the different types of rushers he’ll face at guard.

 

Just because the guard spot affords him some extra protection doesn’t mean that Cosmi wasn’t good in his own right though. He did a solid job throughout the game in pass protection and was able to maintain some long blocks one-on-one."

With not alot of space to type I was just saying I highly doubt we ever get Logan back completely healthy again and back to the form he had several years ago, and what I should have said is we need a TE to step up and fill those shoes of a departed Logan Thomas and I’m hoping Turner or Bates steps up and takes the reins… signing Kaden Smith also could be (not saying it is) a indication Thomas is nowhere ready to play and even if so isn’t going to be counted on as much

I’m actually not super worried about him. Paulsen may be biased toward tight ends but said he may have been the MVP of camp so far. Given that and that he seems to be a focus of the offense and a smart player who really seems to have the offense down I think they really are just giving him as much as rest as possible. He may not give us 17 games this year but I think he’s going to be huge for us.
