A Look Back at where the current fiasco began

After Gibbs re-retired, Farquaad and Vinny Bugeyes went out in search of a new coach.  The presumed prime candidate, GW, had several demands that were dealbreakers - he wanted more control over personnel rather than accepting the questionable acumen of Cerrato, he wanted to keep Al Saunders and as part of that, wanted the chance to pick another QB over Jason Campbell.  Instead, they went with Zorn because he was able to explain in adequately simplistic terms what he would do to improve Campbell.

Of course, Campbell was never starting material, our franchise LT suffered a career ending injury, and the fans screamed for the team president's head (sound familiar?).

Snyder and Cerrato got ****faced drunk and showed up at Mike Shanahan's home in the middle of the night, iirc, it was reportedly 2am unannounced. Lobsterman said there was nothing he could do for the current season, but maybe after it was over. While he had Dannyboy's ear, he brought up Bruce Allen with the comment "can you believe a guy like that is on the street?" Shanahan wanted Allen for the same reason he wanted Haslett - subservience over competency. Both would be indebted to him because nobody else would hire idiots with such demonstrable records of failure. Snyder immediately hired Allen as a way to lure Shanahan. (He arguably may have hired Pepper Rodgers early on merely as a bridge to landing Spurrier).

Now we are in a moment that has elements of both what led to the disastrous Zorn hire as well as the later Allen fiasco. Lord Farquaad is likely to be looking solely at whom he believes can turn his personal choice of Haskins into a legit QB, and he is also likely to install whatever GM or Team President he thinks will facilitate that hire. If Alex Smith is suddenly promoted to a FO role, than you know we are going after Bienemy.

Rather than hiring a QUALIFIED GM who would oversee the coaching search, we will more than likely see a FO filled with whoever appeals to the desired coaching candidate... or it will be another Snyder-enabler like Riddick.

The fiasco began with Snyder thinking a big-name coach was always the answer at the expense of a solid personnel guy. You could arguably lump Marty in this category, and, IIRC, the OP is not a big Marty fan, but he deserved more than one season. People always say "but Marty didnt want a GM" but I think we had a good personnel guy in John Schneider here and it was Beathard who refused to work with Marty in order to come back, which didn't work anyway because Dan was too cheap and we wound up with the Ninja again. By the time Gibbs came back, I was excited as any, but knew he wasnt going to stay around enough to make a big difference.

Yes, this is a point I have been hammering repeatedly. Other than a handful of guys like Belichik or Parcells, most coaches fail at personnel.

A qualified GM should be priority 1.

When Daniel Snyder bought the team.

We were NFC East champs. Multiple first round picks from the Sean Gilbert free agency signing. Ton of cap space and a very decent QB in Brad Johnson after failing to sign Trent Green due to the ownership change. The team was poised for a decade of dominance.

In a way I think the Gruden era was similar to the Norv era and that Dan will enter 2020 like he did in 1999 with a team which had a bad prior season but showed some promise towards the end. Except this time we know who the QB will be, but don't know who the coach will be.

Which also, unfortunately, makes the dozen or so seasons between Marty and Jay a colossal waste of time that Snyder subjected us to and remains the defining period of his ownership.

Wasn't Bruce touted as being just the "cap guy," with Shanahan making all the decisions?

As I recall, Bruce had a reputation for being able to make the numbers work, and he was supposed to come here and break us out of salary cap jail.

The notion of him picking players, hiring football staff or spearheading stadium projects wasn't even on the table.

Quite a journey over the last decade...

They hired Zorn as the OC. Then interviewed other candidates. No coach was willing to agree to have his staff and QB chosen for him. After Spagnolo and several others turned down the job they promoted Zorn. The biggest flop in the history of the maroon and black!

Fassel was willing.  He wanted the job, seemed close to getting it, but the fans freaked out.

I'm finding it difficult to drink the Kool-Aid now that you have pointed out the turd in the punchbowl.

I think the fiasco actually began in 1999 when the Turk brother messed up the field goal snap against Tampa Bay, denying the Redskins a trip to the NFCCG

Things might have been a lot different with another Super Bowl appearance or championship

This hits me as absolutely true.  There is no way the ass hole will allow a coaching hire unless that coach agrees to develop his pick, Haskins. Look at this way. We will be picking in the top five in 2021 as well at this rate.  I am still not 100% sure Allen goes anywhere because he is such a good puppet.

So basically Shanahan duped Snyder into hiring Allen as the "GM"  because he figured he could slip into the role of the personnel decision guy while Allen would have the title of GM but really only be there to make the contracts work.  The problem is Shanahan got himself hired by an owner who wanted to be the personnel guy so it likely became an instant conflict.

Let's  not forget that Shanahan was well on his way to failing in DC until RG3.  We can say what we want about RG3 big picture-wise, but that magical season where The Shanahan's devised a scheme for RG3 to succeed is very likely what saved Mike Shanahan's job.

Looking back to that time and comparing it to the present, it feels like we're back to the Big Splash phase of the Dan Snyder Cycle. That would indicate Dan is looking primarily for another Big Name Coach who's good for ticket sales and also foolish enough to think that big bucks and a promise of "total control" will do the trick. The primary executive toady can be named later, if at all.

It almost has to be a Big Name Coach who's out of the game and not anyone else's top prospect at the moment. For some reason, the name "Urban Meyer" comes to mind.
