gotcha. well at least theyre getting a veteran goaltender for cheap, just in case samsonov needs a little more mentoring before completely taking over. doesnt hurt to have someone with his experience when the contract is WAY better than what holtbeast is going to get

I hope it works out. We've seen young goalies deliver for the Caps and for other teams so I'm skeptical of moves like this.

No matter what, we have 2-3 years to contend then this team is going to be super old and it will be all about Ovi chasing the scoring record.

  • ixcuincle changed the title to 2019 - 20 Washington Capitals Thread (Lundqvist to Caps?)
  • Braden Holtby signed a two-year, $8.6 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

At his height, Holtby was an elite goaltender who won the Vezina Trophy in 2016 and finished second in voting in 2017. However, he's fallen out of favor in recent years. Holtby posted a 25-14-6 record, 3.11 GAA, and .897 save percentage in 48 contests with the Capitals in 2019-20. Vancouver likely sees him as a backup goaltender and insurance policy behind Thatcher Demko, who is just 24-years-old and impressed during the 2020 playoffs. That said, Holtby is definitely on the expensive end of the spectrum for that role.

  • Henrik Lundqvist has signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Washington Capitals.

Lundqvist isn't the elite goaltender he once was, but he's a good fit for the Capitals. Lundqvist will be the backup goaltender and serve as a mentor for Ilya Samsonov, who is just 23-years-old and has the potential to be the Capitals' starter for years to come. This is also an opportunity for Lundqvist to finally win a championship, which is about the only thing missing on the future Hall of Famer's resume.

As a backup, this could be a good signing. I hope the Caps have a backup plan to this in case he isn't better than the last two seasons. Caps fans all the the value of great back up goaltending. We don't have a Cup without Grubauer getting the Caps to the playoffs.

Pretty much the same deal Holtby got right? So they let Holtby walk for 1 defenseman? Or am I reading that wrong

Yes but they really wanted a RHD, they believe in Samsonov and just wanted a veteran like Henrik to mentor him and take some pressure off. Im not sure on the Shultz signing, apparently he’s a shell of his former self and Penguins fans seem to he ecstatic that we signed him.

As others have noted, it's gonna be a very compressed schedule and no team is going to have their starting goalie play 75% or more of their games like we see in normal years.  This season more than any other, it's not really a backup goalie, it's a 1B goalie.  They needed a reliable veteran like the King but understandably didn't want to pay too much.  I like the move.  Lundquist is at the point in his career where he alone probably won't win them games, but he also won't lose them games either.  And that's the most realistic expectation a team should have for their backup.

Maybe someday Holtby can return to the Capitals organization and become a goal coach, kinda like Ollie Kolzig was

As much as I appreciated the meaning of Kolzig's return, I seem to recall his purpose was to execute Oates' will in teaching goaltending (because as an offensive player, Oates knew offense, and therefore he knew defense and by extension goaltending) because the previous coach (was that still Dave Prior?) wouldn't give in to Oates' neurosis.

So now that we have the entire picture of Holtby's Caps tenure, can we debate best Caps goalie ever?  Most of us would say Holtby, and deservedly so.  He was a major reason we won the Cup, he was generally considered a top-5 to top-10 goalie for the better part of his 8 years here, Vezina trophy winner, NHL All-Star, The Save will go down as one of the top 5 plays in Caps history.  But one could argue Olie Kolzig too.  He was our unquestioned starter for 10 years, he also has Vezina and All-Star accolades, and the Caps teams he played behind weren't half as talented as the guys Holtby played with.  Olie never won us the Cup, and that alone probably knocks him down a peg from Holts, but honestly just leading the '98 team to the Finals is almost as impressive as winning the whole thing with the loaded Caps team of 2018. Tough call. We're lucky to have had both of them.

Caps draft pick Hendrix Lapierre could be interesting -- a legit top 10 pick who's stock fell due to several injuries this year (concussions).

Caps seem to do exceptionally well with 1st round draft picks in the 20 to 30 range. That's where they selected Kuznetsov, Carlson and Mike Green.

Hopefully the trend continues with Lapierre.

And Burakovsky and Samsonov.  And Connor McDavidMichael looks like he's got some talent.  Disappointed they didn't play him at all in the playoffs when we were without Backstrom.

Of course, we also had one epic miss in Anton Gustafsson who decided one day to just pack his bags and leave the continent.
