REDSKINS ANNOUNCE 2019 SCHEDULE

 

Redskins to be featured in Monday and Thursday night prime-time match ups

 

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The National Football League announced its 2019 regular season schedule tonight, and the highlights of the Washington Redskins’ 2019 regular season will be the team’s appearance in two prime-time games. The Redskins have now appeared in at least two prime-time games since the 2014 season.

 

The Redskins will open the season on the road for a consecutive year when the team begins NFC East play at the Philadelphia Eagles at 1 p.m. on Sept. 8 on FOX. The Redskins will then return home to FedExField for back-to-back games, first against their divisional rivals the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 15 on FOX. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Washington will then make its prime-time debut hosting the Chicago Bears on ESPN’s Monday Night Football to close out a two-game home stand on Sept. 23 at 8:15 p.m.

 

The Redskins will play four consecutive 1 p.m. games in Weeks 4-7, starting on the road with its third division game in four weeks against the New York Giants on Sept. 29 on FOX. Washington will then host the defending Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots on Oct. 6 on CBS. The Redskins will travel to face the Miami Dolphins for an Oct. 13 match-up before returning to FedExField to host the 49ers on Oct 20. Both games will air on FOX.

 

In Week 8, the Redskins will open a two-game road slate at the Minnesota Vikings for Thursday Night Football on Oct. 24 at 8:20 p.m. The game will air on FOX, NFL Network and stream live on Amazon. The Redskins will close the road swing at the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. on FOX.

 

After a Week 10 bye – Washington’s latest since a Week 10 bye in 2014 – the Redskins will then host their second two-game home stand of the season in Weeks 11-12, first hosting the New York Jets on Nov. 17 on CBS prior to welcoming the Detroit Lions on Nov. 24 on FOX. Both contests are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.

 

The Redskins will play five consecutive 1 p.m. games in Weeks 13-17, beginning with consecutive road games at the Carolina Panthers on Dec. 1 on CBS before traveling to the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 8. Washington will play three straight division games to close out the 2019 campaign on FOX. Washington will host the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 15 and the New York Giants on Dec. 22 before closing the regular season on the road at the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 29.

A select number of games across the league, including the Redskins’ Week 13 contest at Panthers, will be “cross-flexed,” moving between CBS and FOX to bring potentially under-distributed games to wider audiences. Some of those contests were announced today while the remainder of “cross-flexed” games will be decided during the season.

 

“Flexible scheduling” will be used in Weeks 5-17. Additionally, in Weeks 5-10, flexible scheduling may be used in no more than two weeks. In Weeks 5-16, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Footballon NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game.  

 

For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to Dec. 30. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot.  Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into prime time. 

 

Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday or Monday nights.

 

NOTES ON THE REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE:

 

Week 1: at Philadelphia Eagles

·         The Redskins will open the season on the road for a consecutive year for the first time since opening the 2008 and 2009 seasons on the road at the New York Giants.

·         The Redskins will be seeking a win to give them their first win in consecutive season openers since a 24-17 victory at the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971 before defeating the Minnesota Vikings to open the 1972 season.

·         A four-year winning streak in road openers would become the second-longest in team history, trailing only the franchise’s streak of seven straight victories in road openers across the 1937-43 seasons.

·         The Redskins are 41-42-4 all-time in season openers, including a 25-24 record in openers since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

·         Including a victory in their road opener against the New York Giants in Week 3 of 2016 and against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2 of 2017, and a 24-6 victory at the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 of the 2018 season, a win would give the Redskins victories in their first road game of four consecutive seasons for the first time since 1940-43.

·         The opener against the Eagles marks a consecutive season the Redskins have opened against NFC competition since opening against the New Orleans Saints and Eagles in Week 1 of the 2012 and 2013 seasons respectively.

·         The game will mark the 30th time the Redskins have opened a season against a division opponent, dating back to the Boston Redskins’ season opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates in an NFL Eastern Division clash on Sept. 13, 1936.

·         The Redskins will attempt to snap a two-game road losing streak against the Eagles and earn their first victory at Lincoln Financial Field since a 27-22 win on Dec. 11, 2016.

·         Including postseason play, the Redskins are 86-77-5 all-time against the Eagles, including season series sweeps in 2015 and 2016.

·         The Redskins’ 86 all-time wins against the Eagles are their most against any opponent.

·         The Redskins are 42-40-2 all-time against the Eagles in Philadelphia, including a victory in the NFC Wild Card Round on Jan. 5, 1991. The Redskins’ 42 road wins against the Eagles are their most against any opponent.

·         The Redskins hold a 4-2-1 record against the Eagles on the road in season openers. The last time the Redskins opened a regular season in Philadelphia was Sept. 12, 1982. Washington defeated Philadelphia 37-34 in overtime.

 

Week 2: vs. Dallas Cowboys

·         The Redskins will face the Cowboys in Week 2 of the 2019 regukar season marking the first time the Redskins have opened the first two weeks of the regular season against a divisional opponent since Week 1 and 2 of the 1999 season.

·         The Redskins are seeking their first consecutive home wins against the Cowboys since defeating their division rivals at home during the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

·         The Redskins will attempt to push their all-time home record against the Cowboys at 30-29 including postseason play, dating back to the teams’ first meeting at Griffith Stadium on Oct. 9, 1960.

 

Week 3: vs. Chicago Bears

·         The Redskins are 26-23-1 all-time against the Bears, including postseason play.

·         The game will be the Redskins’ 72ndappearance on Monday Night Football since the introduction of the broadcast package in 1970. Entering 2019, the Redskins’ 72 previous appearances on the program are ranked fifth-most of any franchise.

·         The Redskins will attempt to snap a six-game losing streak on Monday Night Footballand earn their first victory on the program since a 20-17 overtime victory against the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 27, 2014.

·         The Redskins will attempt to push their all-time home record against the Bears at 14-12-1, including postseason play.

·         The Redskins are currently riding a seven-game winning streak against the Bears, including a 45-21 victory in the teams’ last meeting on Dec. 24, 2016. The seven-game unbeaten run is the Redskins’ longest active streak against any opponent.

·         The Redskins have won three straight home games against Chicago.

 

Week 4: at New York Giants 

·         The Redskins and Giants enter the 2018 season having previously played one another 174 times. The Giants are the Redskins’ most-common opponent.

·         The Redskins will look to secure their 70thall-time win against the Giants, their third-most against any opponent in franchise history.

·         The Redskins will attempt to win their third road game against the Giants in a span of four years. It would mark the team’s first time accomplishing the feat since winning four straight road games against the Giants from 1980-83.

·         A win would give the Redskins their first consecutive wins at the Giants since the 1999 and 2000 regular season.

 

Week 5: vs. New England Patriots

·         A win against the Patriots would give the Redskins their first victory against a defending Super Bowl champion since defeating the New York Giants on Dec. 3, 2012.

  • The game will be the 11th meeting between Redskins and Patriots all-time. The Redskins currently hold a 6-4 all-time advantage.
  • A win would represent the Redskins’ first victory against the Patriots since Sept. 28, 2003.

 

Week 6: at Miami Dolphins

·         The game will be a rematch of the Redskins’ 27-17 victory in Super Bowl XVII.

  • A win would give the Redskins their first victory against the Dolphins on the road in Miami.

 

Week 7: vs. San Francisco 49ers

  • The Redskins will attempt to win back-to-back games against the 49ers since the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
  • A win would even the Redskins’ all-time home record against the 49ers at 10-8, including postseason play.

 

Week 8: at Minnesota Vikings

·         The Redskins are 4-5 all-time in Thursday games played on dates other than Thanksgiving Day.

·         A win would give the Redskins a victory in a Thursday game other than Thanksgiving Day for the first time since a 24-16 win at home against the Chicago Bears on Dec. 6, 2007.

·         The game will mark the first meeting against former Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.

·         The Redskins are 13-13 all-time against the Vikings, including postseason play.

·         The 2019 contest between the Redskins and Vikings will mark the teams’ eighth meeting in the last 10 seasons. Since 2010, the only years in which the teams have not played one another were the 2015 and 2018 seasons.

·         Including postseason play, the Redskins are 6-6 all-time on the road against the Vikings.

 

Week 9: at Buffalo Bills

·         The game will be a rematch of the Redskins’ 37-24 victory in Super Bowl XXVI.

·         The Redskins will attempt to push their all-time home record against the Bills at 3-5 and earn their first road win at Buffalo since a 27-7 win on Nov. 1, 1987.

 

Week 11: vs. New York Jets

·         A win against the Jets would be the Redskins’ 15th in a game directly following a bye week since byes were instituted in 1990.

·         The game will be the Redskins first following a bye in Week 10 since the 2014 season. The Week 10 bye marks the Redskins’ latest off-week since a Week 9 bye during the 2016 season.

  • The Redskins are 8-3 all-time against the Jets. The Redskins’ .727 winning percentage against the Jets is Washington’s best against any opponent with a minimum of 10 games played.
  • The Redskins are 4-2 all-time at home against the Jets.

 

Week 12: vs. Detroit Lions

·         The Redskins are 30-14 all-time against the Lions, including postseason play.

·         With a victory, the Redskins can end a four-game skid to the Lions and push their all-time home record against Detroit at 22-3.

·         The Redskins are seeking their first win against Detroit since 2008 and their first home win since 2007.

 

Week 13: at Carolina Panthers

·         The Redskins are 8-6 all-time against the Panthers, including a 2-4 series record in Carolina.

·         The Redskins won the first six meetings between the two teams from 1995-2001.

 

Week 14: at Green Bay Packers

·         The Redskins currently trail their all-time series with the Packers, 16-20-1, including postseason play.

·         Including postseason play, the Redskins are 5-11 all-time at Lambeau Field against the Packers, dating back to the first meeting between the Packers and then-Boston Braves on Nov. 13, 1932.

 

Week 15: vs. Philadelphia Eagles

·         The Redskins are 44-37-3 all-time in home games against the Eagles including wins in two of the last four seasons.

·         The game marks the first of a three-game divisional opponent stretch to close out the 2019 season.

 

Week 16: vs. New York Giants

  • The Redskins and Giants enter the 2019 season having previously faced each other 170 times. The Giants are the Redskins’ most common opponent.

·         The first victory in Washington Redskins franchise history was secured in a home contest against the New York Giants when the then-Boston Braves defeated the Giants, 14-6, at Braves Field on Oct. 9, 1932.

 

Week 17: at Dallas Cowboys

·         The game will mark the fourth time in the last eight seasons that the Redskins and Cowboys have faced one another in the teams’ regular season finale.

·         Washington is 5-3 in regular season finales against Dallas since the adoption of the 16-game schedule in 1978.

  • A road win against the Cowboys would give the Redskins a victory in North Texas for the first time since winning 34-23 to close the 2015 regular season.
  • The game marks the first time the Redskins have closed out a regular season against three division opponents.

There is no way this is accurate lol....

Can’t be. We won consecutive season openers in 2010, 2011 AND 2012. 

 

2010: 13-7 win over Dallas on SNF

2011: 28-14 win over the giants 

2012: 40-32 win over the saints.

Think it meant to say "wins in season openers where the team has opened on the road." Since 1971-72, Skins have only opened on the road in consecutive seasons three times (1977-78, 1997-98, 2008-09) prior to 2018-19, and did not win both season openers in each of the three instances. 

 

The press release, intentionally or not, seems to almost go out of its way in emphasizing all of the 1 pm games.

That's really hard to believe, they've never won IN Miami.  Not questioning it, it's just shocking.  You would have thought the 'Skins would have played and won 1 game in Miami in it's history.

I'm glad they're being positive, but there is a greater chance of me waking up with Jennifer Laurence in my bed than the 'Skins beating the Patriots.  Well, I guess it's possible the entire Patriot team is on IR, including Brady, and Billy B. forgets how to coach for a week.  It could happen...

I was at that game.  It was REALLY REALLY cold.  It was the first of the 4 game stretch that led them to the playoffs in 2007 following the tragic murder of Sean Taylor.

8-6 overall, won the first 6, which means they've lost the last 8, and all since 2001.  That's kinda pathetic, actually.

LOL, I didn't read any of the "nuggets against opponents" part of this thing after enduring the first portion....."the Redskins will next play 5 consecutive 1 pm games," as opposed to the two 1 pm games directly before that stretch. So poorly edited....they could've probably written something disparaging about Snyder in there and still would've sent it without anyone noticing.

 

They should hire Kleese to write the "nuggets" part so he can do it a la his old "history" threads and add that he saw the MNF game against the 49ers in 1998 at a newly-opened sports bar in Ponca City, OK. But move him to Hawaii for this assignment, so he'll have to watch the Skins games at 7 am and wonder how he'll have to spend the remainder of his Sunday by late morning!

I actually like the fact we are playing some division games in the beginning of the season and not like last year.  You have a better understanding of where you stand in the division and what needs to be done in the 2nd half of the season. I also like we have a bye-week towards the end too.

It says playoff teams.  There are only 4 different teams in those 6 games, so, the stat is correct.

Trying to figure out what game to go to this year.   Usually make at least one.  Typically there is at least one game out west.  Last year in AZ.  Year before Seattle... this year there just doesn’t seem to be a good option. 

 

Is this the year year to visit FedEx?  Maybe go to NY?  Green Bay? Minny? Any suggestions for this years schedule?  Had planned to go to the Dallas game on the road but that was before i knew it was the last game.  

 

Cant decide.

I went to our game in GB in 2007– it was a great experience and should be on any bucket list for fans that like to travel to games. 

 

For me, I generally choose my road game(s) in the late Sept to late Oct timeframe. Generally weather is good everywhere and unless we REALLY suck, the game should matter at the time. 

 

I’ve seen them play in maybe half of the cities/venues now plus FedEx of course. Seen them play the division both at home and road with the exception of the Giants at FedEx. That game at the Giants would be a good one to target I’d think. Nice time of year and it’s a solid stadium experience. 

 

Personally I’m eyeing Miami and Buffalo. Miami for obvious reasons and Buffalo because I have family ties to the city and spent a good chunk of time there as a kid. I’d like my kids to visit the city and that would be a good excuse. First weekend in Nov so it shouldn’t be TOO cold. 

 

I would not suggest a FedEx trip. Some of the negative stuff about the stadium is totally legit and some is exaggerated, but our fans just aren’t strong anymore and I figure if I’m gonna see them on the road I might as well go to an ACTUAL road game. Hotel accommodations convenient to FedEx suck and there is nothing cool at all in the area. I have very much enjoyed staying in Alexandria last two times I’ve been and the metro is an easy ride to the game. If I were you I’d wait and do a FedEx trip when you KNOW we are good. 

 

Dallas is a good one to see as well, but like you said no way I’d book that with it being the last game of year. It’s a four hour drive for me so I always wait and see if it’s a game worth seeing and I wind up going about half the time. 

 

Of the places you mentioned, I think GB is your top spot for sure— but it’s risky with it being a December game. Will it be frigid and will we be out of it? I think at Giants is a much safer bet.

Don't leave Minn out. They have an amazing stadium and it's covered. No issues with weater and the game other than getting there...  🙂 And of course it's THE rematch. 

 

I agree GB would be great but that weather would worry me. At that time of year it could be anywhere from 40s to -10, not ot mention the chance ofr snow. The later would be a major buzz kill...  LOL

I went to the game at Giants in 2016. Nice stadium and the Giants fans were pretty cool, but were almost a bit TOO docile for an early season back and forth game.  Most I saw them get worked up was when some random started a "J-E-T-S" chant as the crowd was filing out after the game (Skins won)

 

I would think Buffalo would be the safest bet this season. I'm really looking forward to going to the Rams and Raiders stadiums in LA and Vegas the next time the Skins play out there.
