Racism in America.... Is it worse now after the 2016 election?

Are they no longer required to teach it or are they forbidden from teaching it?  I think the difference could be quite important.  Think of the potential impact on things like the AP U.S. History exams.  Now I know only a third of students go to college.  So at best only a third could be impacts by that requirement, but the point remains there are many ways to influence what we learn.  I hope it is a "required to teach" issue and not a "required not to teach" case.

Biracial Harvard-educated doctor claims hospital DEMOTED her for opposing plans to have only black staff treat black patients in wake of George Floyd murder

A Harvard-educated, biracial physician was removed as head of the OB/GYN department of a Minneapolis hospital after she opposed offering patients ‘segregated care based on race’, she claims.

Dr. Tara Gustilo filed a discrimination complaint against Hennepin Healthcare System in June saying she was demoted for criticizing the Black Lives Matter movement on her social media page.

The complaint says that she was removed from her position despite rave job performance reviews during her six-year stint as head of a 32-person team.

‘Under my leadership, my department improved my patient satisfaction scores and connected our hospital’s diverse population with the care that they needed,’ Gustilo says in the complaint.

She received ‘one of the highest patient satisfaction ratings of all the doctors at Hennepin Healthcare and in the nation.’

But in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year, Gustilo criticized ‘anti-racist’ training, claiming that it was ‘actually teaching racism.’

‘Why are we not teaching that judging by immutable qualities is ridiculous,’ she wrote in one Facebook post dated September 25, 2020.

‘Instead, the approach being promoted is to teach that because a person is white, they are necessarily racist and privileged.’

‘Isn’t this the type of thinking we are trying to eradicate?’

She claims that her bosses violated her constitutional rights after she opposed the hospital’s policy of affiliating with BLM.

Gustilo was removed as head of the OB/GYN department because ‘some of my colleagues saw my post and determined I was no longer “fit” to be chair,' she says.

‘They contended that my opposition to the growing, racial essentialist philosophy could potentially cause our patients to mistrust our department, create division among staff, and reflect negatively on the hospital.'

Gustilo also alleges that the department began to shift away in recent years from an emphasis on ‘multicultural care’ to one of ‘segregated care.’

She says that the new policy instituted by the department had ‘black caregivers assigned to black patients.’

‘Why would people who claim to fight racism want segregation?’ Gustilo says.

‘It’s just unacceptable’: Racial slur printed on man’s receipt at Gwinnett business

An amusement center in Gwinnett County fired a 16-year-old employee after he printed a racial slur on a Black customer’s receipt.

Stepfan Black and about eight of his family members went to the Snellville location of Urban Air Adventure Park on July 24 to celebrate his niece’s birthday.

The Atlanta resident shared his name with the Black employee while ordering food for the table.

The family grew impatient as time passed without the food showing up, prompting Black to check his receipt to see what time he placed the order.

Black spoke to a manager about the receipt, who he said offered the family free french fries and passes to return to the business again. “That was a slap in the face,” he said. “Some fries? Really?”

Black said an employee let his niece participate in indoor skydiving for free after checking the receipt. The employee returned with tickets for his niece but did not return the receipt, he said.

The family stayed at the establishment for two hours after ordering the food, Black said, as he didn’t want to “ruin” his niece’s birthday. During that time, he said no one from upper management approached him to ask about the situation.

Black tried to call the corporate office for Urban Air on Monday and Tuesday to share what happened, but he said he was unable to reach anyone. He later shared a photo of the receipt to his 16,000 followers on social media, at which time the company reached out to him.

Black met with Gregory White, owner of the Snellville location, on Wednesday to retrieve the receipt. Black said during their meeting the owner raised his voice, declined to hand over the receipt and told him to find a lawyer if he wants it.

Probably not allowed to teach that, either.

But remember.

Removing monuments erected during segregation, built in honor of Confederates - "attempting to sanitize history".

Making it illegal for history to mention that slavery (or segregation. Or discrimination.) happened. - Preventing racism.

House Democrats demand details after Border Patrol agents accused of profiling Latinos in Michigan

House Democrats are asking the Biden Administration for answers after a report accused Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents of racially profiling Latinos in Michigan.

In a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas dated last week, Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) asked for a briefing on efforts to “respond to serious allegations of discrimination and misuse of taxpayer resources” by agents on Michigan’s border with Canada.

“We are deeply troubled by what appear to be discriminatory abuses of authority and misuse of taxpayer funds. DHS must provide a full explanation of exactly how it is addressing the problems laid bare by the ACLU,” the lawmakers wrote.

The letter comes after an analysis from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan found that Border Patrol agents “routinely spend their time and resources targeting people of Latin American origin who are long-term Michigan residents.”

In a statement, a CBP spokesperson said its Detroit sector "prioritizes enforcement efforts on criminal aliens and targeting and dismantling Transnational Criminal Organizations."

"It is the policy of U.S. Customs and Border Protection to prohibit the consideration of race or ethnicity in law enforcement, investigation, and screening activities, in all but the most exceptional circumstances. As such, CBP is fully committed to the fair, impartial and respectful treatment of all members of the trade and traveling public," the spokesperson said.

ACLU looked at apprehension records from 2012 to 2019 that a federal judge ordered CBP to disclose.

The report found that 85 percent of noncitizens apprehended at the border were from Latin America, despite the fact that people of Latin American origin make up only 16.8 percent of the state’s foreign-born population.

ACLU said it was “even more striking” that the vast majority of people arrested while entering or attempting to enter the northern border without authorization are “either citizens of Canada or originally from a European nation.”

“Taken together, these findings suggest that CBP’s operations in Michigan are focused less on its lawful enforcement priorities than on harassing longtime residents of Michigan in a way that appears to systematically and disproportionately target those of Latin American origin,” the lawmakers wrote.

Clackamas County employee charged with hate crime

A 20 year-old Clackamas County employee has been charged with a hate crime after police say he painted a swastika on the sidewalk beside a memorial display for a Black man who died after being held at the county’s jail.

Collin Michael Williams, who is white, was arrested Thursday and charged with a bias crime, criminal mischief and abuse of a memorial.

On Wednesday, Oregon City police received a report that a memorial display near the county’s developmental services building had been vandalized. The memorial display was the result of a vigil held days earlier for Jermelle Madison, who had been found unresponsive in the county’s jail in June and later died. Madison’s death remains under investigation.

Police asked businesses in the area for any surveillance footage of people buying spray paint around the time the memorial was thought to have been destroyed. On Thursday, that led police to their suspect, Madison, and his vehicle. They also found a social media post of the suspect videotaping himself defacing the memorial.

According to police, the video was captioned: ”I unenthusiastically commit a hate crime.” The suspected also stated, “I also spray-painted a fun German windmill on the sidewalk for good measure. DM for the pic.”

Police were able to identify the suspect as Williams and also determined he worked for Clackamas County.

During an interview, Williams admitted to destroying the memorial and painting the swastika.

Lawsuit Says White Woman Spewed Racist Insults at Vietnamese Neighbor — Once While Naked from the Waist Down (VIDEO)

An Asian woman is suing her white neighbor over racist harassment caught on video. Plaintiff Thi Boa Tran Pham, who is Vietnamese, says that Jan Myers, 72, is the neighbor who was recorded making racist insults in Shoreline, Washington.

As clear from footage, the perpetrator subjected Pham to taunting and threats.

“Hey, Miss Vietnam,” said the woman identified as Myers, sitting in a vehicle. “You’re not going to live very long.”

“Come on out, slant eye,” the woman said in another video. “I’m calling the cops on you, you little slant eye.”

Myers was arrested for a hate crime and released on her own recognizance.

Woman who drove into 2 children because of their race gets 25 years in federal prison

A white Iowa woman who admitted she ran over and tried to kill two children with her car because of their race was sentenced in federal court to 25 years in prison.

Nicole Poole Franklin, 43, pleaded guilty in April to federal hate crime charges for attempting to kill a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl in December 2019.

The Department of Justice said she targeted the minors "because of their race and national origin." The boy is Black and the girl is Hispanic.

Poole Franklin's public defender said via email on Friday that he could not comment on the case.

According to prosecutors, Poole Franklin was driving her Jeep Grand Cherokee in Des Moines on Dec. 9, 2019, when she saw the 12-year-old walking on the sidewalk with his sibling, also a minor.

"Upon seeing the children and believing that the victim was of Middle Eastern or African descent, Poole Franklin drove her vehicle over the curb towards both children, striking one of them," the Justice Department said in a press release.

The victim suffered cuts and bruises but did not go to the hospital.

you’d be surprised (or maybe not) how many people buy their supplies for committing a crime, right around the corner from where they’re committing the crime, right before they commit the crime.

Virginia Man Sentenced for Burning Cross on Black Family’s Lawn

A man has been sentenced after he admitted to burning a cross on a Black family’s lawn. James Brown, 41, must spend 18 months in federal prison, according to the Department of Justice.

“When Brown burned a cross in the victim’s front yard, he carried out a despicable act of intimidation, interfered with a federally protected housing right, and broke a serious federal law,” Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Bubar said on Friday. “Today’s sentence demonstrates that such threatening acts of hatred will be swiftly investigated and prosecuted. We thank the FBI and state partners for their hard work on this important case.”

Brown is the man from Marion, Virginia who was charged with burning a cross on the lawn of a Black, across-the-street neighbor on June 14, 2020. The neighbor’s son Travon Brown had organized a Black Lives Matter protest just hours before.

A Black Pastor and Former Cop Walk Into a Walmart to Return a TV. So Why Were They Handcuffed and Accused of Stealing It?

Race is a funny thing.

We all know that it’s a social construct, yet we still adhere to principles established by our forefathers, which looks something like this: If two Black men are ever seen carrying a television, even if they are carrying the TV into a store to return it, chances are they probably stole it and should be treated as thieves.

Allegedly.

Well Walmart’s got some explaining to do, and by explaining I mean two Black men have filed a lawsuit against the company—which appears to have a return policy that includes televisions—claiming that they were handcuffed and accused of stealing the television they were trying to return.

From Business Insider:

Quote

The plaintiffs Dennis Stewart, a former police officer, and Terence Richardson, a pastor, were handcuffed by the police at a Walmart in the Houston suburb of Conroe, Texas, after trying to return a $300 TV last September, the lawsuit said. Stewart bought the TV earlier in the day but said it wasn’t working properly, and so wanted to return it, the lawsuit said.

The two men said that when they went to return the TV, a white employee at the customer-service counter accused them of stealing it and refused to acknowledge their receipt as proof of purchase.

They said the associate called the police. The lawsuit said the police arrived, handcuffed them, and took them to the loss-prevention office, where Stewart was said to have broken down in tears.

Arizona launches a bold new experiment to limit racist convictions

Arizona’s conservative state Supreme Court took a surprising step last week that could lead to juries in that state being more racially diverse, and thus less likely to treat racial minorities more harshly.

It announced that it will eliminate “peremptory challenges” in Arizona — a practice that allows trial lawyers to remove jurors from a case, often for arbitrary or ill-defined reasons.

Although criminal justice reformers, including some who sit on the Supreme Court of the United States, have warned for decades that peremptory challenges are often used to exclude jurors because of their race, the practice remains widespread in the United States. Arizona will be the first state to eliminate peremptory challenges entirely; the state’s new rules will take effect in January.

People of color are less likely to serve on juries for a wide range of reasons — racial minorities are less likely than white people, for example, to appear on voter registration lists and vehicle registration lists, which many jurisdictions use to develop a pool of potential jurors. But multiple studies suggest that peremptory strikes play a major role in producing juries that are whiter than the population as a whole.

Fox's Jesse Watters blames the “foreign-born population” in California for irrelevance of the Republican Party in the state

ESSE WATTERS (CO-HOST): But the real issue is immigration has killed the Republican Party in the state of California. The foreign-born population in the state of California is 25%. Foreign-born voters vote 2-to-1 Democrats. You do amnesty, you do those special visas, green cards, chain migration, birthright amnesty, you're just loading it up. We already know Hispanics vote 2-to-1 Democrat, Asians 2-to-1 Democrat, we know Blacks 90% they vote Democrat. So, in a state like that if you throw out a lot of nasty racial attacks to that population, that's you know, we're not all paying attention that much to politics, that's going to move the needle.

A 'New Yorker' Editor Dug For Diversity Stats. She Calls The Results 'Passive Racism'

On Tuesday, journalism and literature Twitter blew up after a user posted a 20-part thread decrying the lack of diversity among writers and editors at one of the most vaunted publications in the country, The New Yorker.

The stats offered about the print magazine were stunning: In the last 15 years, less than 0.01% of print features and critical pieces were edited by a Black editor. More women were able to publish profiles in the magazine between 1925 and 1935 than between 1990 and 2000. And over the last 30 years, spanning 1990 to 2020, few to no reviews of cinema, fine arts or classical music were published by either women or writers of color.

Many readers of this thread were surprised to discover that it was written by a New Yorker insider: Erin Overbey, the magazine's own archive editor. She began her thread: "Let's talk about racism! Most white people at prestigious magazines don't ever want to talk about race or diversity at all. Why? It's primarily because they've been allowed to exist in a world where their mastheads resemble member registries at Southern country clubs circa 1950."

She went on: "White people are rarely actively racist at these publications. They simply never bother to challenge the status quo—typically out of concern that they will be inconvenienced or made to feel uncomfortable. And so the status quo often remains entrenched for literally decades. ... Because otherwise friendly, decent white people are really the bedrock upon which passive racism maintains its grip on media mastheads & editorial departments."

Student: Rock Island soccer team told they can’t board bus, to ‘go back to your country’

A student on the Rock Island High School boys’ soccer team said he and other players experienced a racist encounter with a charter bus company Thursday as they were about to leave for an away game.

A sophomore on the soccer team, Gabriel Albarran, said he was wearing a Mexican flag around his shoulders for Mexican Independence Day. As the team was about to board the bus, Albarran said the bus driver told him, “that flag is not allowed here. This is America. You shouldn’t have that flag,” and told the teenager to go back to his country.

The bus driver would not allow the students to board the bus who were carrying a Mexican flag. The rest of the team refused to board again and had to reschedule the game since a new transportation plan could not be reached in time, Albarran said.

Dr. Reginald Lawrence, superintendent of the Rock Island-Milan School District, said, “Our students should not have to experience this sort of bias and racism.”

“What took place was extremely disappointing and unacceptable, however, our RIHS Soccer Team and the Head Coach conducted themselves with respect and dignity,” he said.

Albarran says he knew he had to maintain his composure and stay calm, especially since he knew his teammates were supporting him. Dr. Lawrence wants them to know, the school and community is supporting them as well. “This is something that’s life-changing for those that had to witness this... Unfortunately in the times we live in, this may happen again and you’ll see it in another form. You’re surrounded by people who support you, your family, and friends in the community. You’ll move forward in times like this. This is real- it’s not a movie it’s not something you see on TV. It’s real all across the world and it’s something we’ll continue to work through.”

School officials said they have worked with Tri-State Travel Agency for many years and are re-evaluating their contract.

TV6 reached out to the charter company, who said they’re conducting an internal investigation and are handling the situation with the bus driver.

Disturbing, racist petition prompts parents to call for accountability at this KC school

Parents in the Park Hill School District are demanding accountability for the student or students behind a racist petition last week that they say was a call to bring back slavery.

The school district has shared few specific details about the incident, which originated at Park Hill South High School last week. Nicole Kirby, a district spokeswoman, said Tuesday that the matter is considered a “discipline incident” and therefore the amount of information the district may share is limited, including the number of students involved or the exact details of what transpired.

“We can’t talk about specifics,” Kirby said. “But we wanted to make sure that we responded and let people know that we don’t tolerate discrimination or harassment.”

Julie Stutterheim’s 15-year-old adopted daughter, who is Ethiopian, heard a vague announcement over the P.A. at LEAD Innovation Studio — another high school in the Park Hill school district — on Monday about the incident at Park Hill South. She was “really upset” when she learned what happened, Stutterheim said. She heard from a classmate that it was in reference to a petition about slavery.

I don’t know that racism is at an all time high but racial tension is definitely up there.  First it was white and black, then Hispanic/Cuban, then white/black to Asians, etc. It’s causing more closed doors between races definitely.   I would be interested to see stats like interracial dating if they were down.  It feels like everyone has gone on the defensive now or the opposite they just don’t give a ****. A bud of mine went on a date recently and the girl made a very racial accusation about their race which spoke to all.  Now he asked for clarification and she more or less said I mean what I mean.  Needless to say that date crashed hard and he was wondering why she even wanted to go out if she felt that strongly against that race.
